Having experienced a shocking electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, James Franco's world became completely dark and quiet for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.
One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up 20 minutes later, lying face down in muddy water. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a tree and muddy road. When Mrs. Franco came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.
The news of James regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a compellent answer as to why this should happen. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since James lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was another sudden shock.

Millions of New Yorkers and visitors ride the city's subway and other trains each day. The public transportation system offers more than just a trip, however. It also has one of the most extensive public art collection in the world, with much of it under city streets.
Some people call it New York's “underground art museum”. It includes more than 250 works of art. They are meant to brighten everyone's ride around the city. There is a huge painting of the night sky on the ceiling of Grand Central Terminal. New Yorkers have been looking up at that artwork for 100 years.
Sandra Bloodworth has directed the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's arts program since it began in 1985.“But actually, it really began much earlier. When the subway was founded in 1904, a percentage of money was set aside to create a special ornamentation (装饰) within the system, in order to make the place a very special place that people would want to use.”he says. For the past 30 years, artists have been asked to make works that relate to city life or to the neighborhood around a train station. There are coastal scenes at stations near the Atlantic Ocean.
Rider Tonya Pierre praises the underground art.“When I'm stressed, I look at the subway art. I love the colors.Where I live, they have a mosaic (镶嵌画) of a man and a woman, like floating across the water, and it's beautiful. It's just beautiful to have art everywhere.”Nearby is Alejandra Acosta,a visitor from Colombia.“I think it's nice when you see these kinds of things that catch your eye when you’re walking in spaces like the subway stations that seem a little bit dull. They don't have a lot of decoration.”
28. Which can best explain the underlined word“extensive”in paragraph 1
A. Expensive. B. Reliable. C. Wide. D. Peaceful.
29. Why is the subway in New York called“underground art museum
A. It shows many art collections.
B. A huge painting is in the subway.
C. There's a museum in the subway station.
D. New Yorkers prefer underground art.
30. Which of the following are subway works in New York related with
A. The map of New York s subway.
B. The New Yorkers' special way of life.
C. The development of New York's subway.
D. The city life or nearby sights around the subway.
31. What does Tonya Pierre think of the subway art
A Unusual B Wonderful C. Traditional D. Dull

Most parents are horrified the first time they catch their kid out in lie.Just how worried should you be if your little one has started lying, and how can you encourage them to tell the truth
According to child and teen psychiatrist Gayani Desilva,MD,lying can actually be a sign of healthy development in young children.
"Kids lie for many reasons, and much of it is normal."DeSilva says."People are not born with the tools of interacting with others and getting their needs met. They must learn how to communicate those needs in appropriate ways, and they'll experiment with different communication techniques until they find the ones that work best for them.Lying is one of those techniques."
For instance,at age two or three, kids may lie as they experiment with pushing limits to see what behaviors are acceptable and what aren't.As kids get older, they become more aware of how their actions affect others. Many lie less frequently because they know it could hurt someone else's feelings or trust. Teens were most likely to consider lying an acceptable behavior if it was to help somebody or keep a personal secret, but not if it was likely to cause harm to somebody.
Just because lying is,in most cases, normal, doesn't mean it should be ignored. If you know your child is lying, what should you do When a child lies, look at them directly and ask,“What do you need "After they tell you, gently remind them that telling you directly will be more effective than lying.
Also,it's a good idea to model the behavior you want to see in your kids.In other words, don't lie to your children. This will set you and your children on a course of open communication, trust, and satisfaction that needs and wants are understood and met.
Generally,a child who is neglected will lie more than a child who has attentive and responsive parents.By paying attention to the reasons behind a small lie, parents can figure out if there's a need that's not being met.
32.Why do kids lie according to DeSilva
A To get their needs met.
B.To improve their communication skills.
C.To avoid hurting someone else’s feelings.
D.To be aware of how their actions affect others.
33.Why do kids lie less frequently as they grow older
A.They think lying limits their behaviors.
B.They realize the negative effects of lying.
C.They consider lying an acceptable behavior.
D.They want to help people who are neglected.
34.What are parents advised to do concerning their kids lying
A.Give them whatever they need. B.Pretend not to notice their lies.
C.Set a good example to them. D.Remind them not to lie again.
35.What does the author think of kids lying
A.Acceptable and appropriate. B.Harmful and worrying.
C.Normal and understandable. D.Healthy and effective.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Family communication refers to the way verbal(口头)and non-verbal information is exchanged between family members. 36 In other words, an important part of communication is not just talking, but listening to what others have to say.
37 It enables members to express their needs, wants, and concerns to each other. Open and honest communication allows family members to express their differences as well as love for one another. 38 Lack(缺乏) of communication will make it hard for family members to deal with problems together.
Effective(有效的) communication is an important feature of strong, healthy families. Research shows communication is an important building block of strong parent-child relationships. Just as effective communication is almost always found in strong, healthy families, poor communication is usually found in unhealthy family relationships. 39 However, poor communication is unclear and indirect. It can lead to many family problems, including ineffective problem-solving and weak emotional bonding(情感纽带).
40 Family researchers have discovered that unhappy family relationships are often the result of negative communication patterns (模式). In fact, one researcher discovered that the more positively couples rated their communication, the more satisfied they were with their relationship five and a half years later.
A. With trust, families can build strong relationships.
B. Communication within the family is very important.
C. Healthy families communicate their thoughts in a clear and direct way.
D. Researchers find not all family members communicate at the same level.
E. It is also through communication that family members are able to solve problems.
F. Communication requires the ability to understand what others are thinking and feeling.
G.There is a strong connection between communication and satisfaction with family relationships.
