2. On an ordinary day several years ago, I watched my partner drown. It tore my world apart.
I thought I knew quite a bit about grief. After all, I'd been a(n) 1 for nearly a decade. I had worked with many people, from those 3 with substance addiction to private-practice clients facing decades-old abuse, trauma, and grief. With all of my 3 and training, if anyone could be 4 to deal with that kind of loss, it should have been me. But none of what I'd learned 5 .
We see grief as something to overcome, something to fix, rather than something to 6 or support. Even our clinicians are trained to see grief as a(n) 7 rather than a natural 8 to deep loss. When professionals don't know how to 9 grief, the rest can hardly be 10 to respond with skill and grace.
Many people truly want to help someone who is with grief. 11 often fail us at times like these. Some people are so 12 to say or do the wrong thing that they choose to do nothing. That's 13 an option, but it's not often a good one.
In fact, one of the best things you can do for a grieved friend is to 14 his needs. Don't say "Call me if there's anything I can do", because your friend will not call. 15 a need, figuring out who might fill that need, and then calling to ask is light-years beyond your grieved friend's 16 level. Instead, make 17 offers: "I will stop by each morning and take the dog for a quick walk." Then 18 and do it.
Above all, show your love. Say and do something. Be willing to stand beside the gaping 19 in your friend's life without 20 or turning away. Listen, be there. Love is the only thing that lasts.
