When you are about to do something brave, a cheerful wish of "Good luck!" from a friend can be helpful. But if you think you need lots of luck, what else might you do?
In the UK and US there are some strange traditions for bringing yourself a little more good luck. Some are hundreds of years old and some are much newer.
Have you heard the saying "When you wish upon a star"? If you are looking up at the sky on a clear night and you see a sudden flash of light, it is probably a shooting star! Seeing one doesn't happen very often. The saying goes that if you see one you will be very lucky, and so if you make a wish, it may come true.
Maybe you have heard of the lucky rabbit's foot. Some people believe that rabbits are lucky animals, so they carry a part of the rabbit, its foot, for good luck. There are all kinds of strange, unclear rules about which of the rabbit's feet is the luckiest. It is said that this good luck tradition is the oldest one of all. However, as the funny saying goes, "Depend on the rabbit's foot if you will, but remember it didn't work for the rabbit!"
People in Britain love trees. If it is autumn and leaves are falling from the trees, some people try to catch the leaves as they fall because they think each leaf they catch will bring them a lucky month in the following year--they will need to catch 12 falling leaves to have a whole year of good luck!

Playing is serious business for children. In fact, it's what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, "Because it's fun! " But it's much more than that. It's also good for them.
Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. They use their five senses to get to know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby's sense of sight.(视觉)
When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions. Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That's because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be. Crayons, paints and Play-doh(彩色塑泥)are also good because they allow children to create. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.
Playing doesn't become any less important once children start school. Many valuable(有价值的) lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how to communicate, learn from others and keep themselves safe when playing.
Do new-born children get to know their world through their five senses?

When do the children begin developing their abilities in making decisions?

What abilities can children who start school get when they are playing?

Do you think playing is important for middle school students?

For twelve children aged between ten and fifteen, Saturdays are spent learning the art of cooking. Their weekly lessons in small classes are so popular that there is a waiting list of 30 children who want to do the course. Parents pay 280 for the course where their children can have fun and learn how to make good food.
Class member Bill, aged ten, says, "I love my mom's cooking and now I can do it better than her. The teachers always make us laugh, especially when we sit down with them to share the food we've made."
Flora is twelve, and she says, "I did a meal for ten friends which they really enjoyed. Then my mom suggested I should develop a hobby, instead of doing nothing on weekends I was happy staying at home, so I wasn't too keen(渴望的)at first. I'm really glad I decided to come, though."
Their teacher, Philippe, says, "The students are great. They are more focused and remember things better than adults, although the kitchen isn't always so tidy when they're cooking! As adults, we're always learning more about food. If parents let their children be interested in cooking while they are young, they'll have enough skills to make food for themselves when they leave home."

Mealtimes in China are not very fixed, they depend on the individual (个人), But with the timetables of work and school, the common mealtimes for Chinese are usually these three: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Let's see how they are different.
Breakfast-- Simple
Usually children go to school before 8 o'clock, so their breakfast time is usually at around 7 o'clock. Chinese office workers usually have breakfast before 8:30 or 9:00. The most common breakfast food is soya-- bean milk (豆浆), deep-fried dough sticks (油条), porridge or rice noodles. Most Chinese hurry to have breakfast and some of them even finish breakfast on the bus or on the way to catch the bus.
Lunch-- Fast
Lunchtime is usually around noon, when Chinese take a break from work or classes. The menu is usually simple: noodles or rice, plus some meat and vegetables, no more than three dishes. Most people don't go far for lunch, or go to big restaurants. They usually eat at school or the company canteen.
Dinner-- Big
Usually dinnertime is 6-8 p.m. Dinner has become the most important meal for many Chinese. The dishes usually include soup, a variety of meat and vegetables, and rice, because dinner is a meal to enjoy with the family. Most Chinese go home after school or work, but some go to restaurants for dinner with friends. If you go to local restaurants, you will find that people often go with several friends or families.

Waste sorting (分类) is a simple process that requires neither a lot of time, nor any special resources. When you throw away trash, do you know which bin (垃圾箱) it should go in? Have you ever noticed the differently-colored trash bins on the street or in your neighborhood?
Some of you might not be able to answer this question easily. In fact, it is very important. Not knowing how to sort waste can make it even harder to save energy and protect the environment.
If you don't sort your trash, all of it will go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and be mixed together. These landfills can take up large areas of ground that could have been used for planting trees or crops. The electronic waste can pollute the soil and groundwater (地下水). Other pieces of garbage, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.
With this in mind, many governments in China have been running waste-sorting activities in recent years. For example, Shanghai announced in July that within three years, all of its residents (居民) should sort their waste into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.
Many other cities, including Shenzhen and Qingdao, plan to use this method to sort their waste. Now that you know his, perhaps you can do your part to protect the environment and encourage others to sort their trash.
Waste sorting is also a major problem around the world.________

But is this what the doctor wanted?
For example, I may just have a little cough today, but after surfing the Internet, I would start thinking that I've got lung cancer (肺癌).Then I may be too worried and feel down. But actually, lung cancer is probably the worst result after terribly coughing for a long time.
At other times, with the information from the Internet, some patients may go to the wrong direction, and things get worse and worse. Of course, this worries them a lot.

"What are you busy with, mom? " a 6-year-old girl asked her mother after she came home from school one day.
Making dinner for our neighbor, " her mother replied.
"Why? "the girl asked.
"She lost her daughter very recently. She's quite sad now. We should take care of her," her mother replied.
"Why does she need our care? " the girl asked again.
"Because she can't do the same things she used to do with her daughter. Even little things like making dinner and cleaning the house are more difficult for her to do now. Maybe you can think of a way to help her out, "her mother replied.
The little girl thought about this for some time. She wondered what she could do. She decided to go over to her neighbor's house and pay her a visit.
She knocked on the door. The woman came to the door, looking quite tired and upset."Can I help you? "the neighbor asked.

Last year, many students had to take online classes at home because of the COVID-19. But according to a survey, most students don't seem to like online classes.
Zhen Jiaxi, a 14-year-old boy, "unlike face-to-face teaching, online teaching doesn't have enough interaction(互动)between teachers and students," he said, "and it's bad for our eyes after watching the video for a long time."
Many students said it was hard to focus on(专注) studying while taking online lessons. This was true for a high school student, Li Yan. She said, "There are no classmates or real teachers watching me. I can use the Internet or do other things if I want to. It's not easy for me to always stay focused." Li Yan prepares a lot before taking her classes to make sure she will pay attention. She also pushes herself to communicate with teachers.
However, online classes still have some advantages(优点). For example, it's convenient(方便的)to take online classes and all you need is a computer. If you don't understand some parts of a lesson, you can watch it over and over again. Also studying at home without going out is much more comfortable.
