When is the Thanksgiving Day

Origin
Traditionally, Thanksgiving is a time "to give thanks" for a plentiful harvest, because it is celebrated on the last Thursday of November at the end of the harvest season.
However, the history of Thanksgiving is not clear, because the harvest season is celebrated in many countries and cultures. Americans commonly celebrate the first harvest of the "pilgrims", or the first colonists to settle in North America, in 1621. Many colonists came to the New World for religious freedom, because England did not allow diversity in religion. Native Americans and colonists did not always live together peacefully, but they did learn from each other by trading goods and farming methods. So many people celebrate the first successful harvest of the colonists.

我们最初知道“感恩节”，是关于“五月花号”（Mayflower）的故事。据说那时候不堪忍受英国国内宗教迫害的一群清教徒到达美洲。当时，美国的印第安人给移民送来了生活必需品，还特地派人教他们怎样狩猎、捕鱼和种植玉米、南瓜。于是，最初为了感谢美洲原住民，诞生了这么一个节日。

感恩节（Thanksgiving Day）是美国和加拿大共有的节日，由美国人民独创，原意是为了感谢上天赐予的好收成。在美国，自1941年起，感恩节是在每年11月的第四个星期四，并从这一天起(from this day on)将休假两天(two days off)；而加拿大与美国的感恩节时间不同，10月第二个星期一。像中国的春节一样，在这一天，成千上万的人们不管多忙(No matter how busy )，都要和自己的家人团聚(reunite)。加拿大的感恩节则起始于1879年，是在每年10月第二个星期一，与美国的哥伦布日相同。

感恩节是西方国家的传统节日(traditional festival)，届时放假三天，合家团聚(All the family members get together)。感恩节的食品富有传统特色。在节日宴会上，有一道必不可少的特色名菜(specialty)——“烤鸡”(turkey)。火鸡是感恩节 的传统主菜，通常是把火鸡肚子里塞上各种调料和拌好的食品，然后整只烤出，由男主人用刀切成薄片分给大家。此外，感恩节的传统食品还有甜山芋(sweet potato )、玉米 (maize )、南 瓜饼(pumpkin cake)、红莓苔子果酱(cranberry jam)等。

Cornbread - 玉米面包，英国人和印第安人都喜欢的食物。English Cheese Pie - 英国奶酪派，奶酪对英国人很重要。Venison - 鹿肉，印第安人带来了5头鹿。Ducks & Geese - 鸭和鹅，英国人捕的。Wild Turkey - 野生火鸡。Garlic and Onions - 大蒜和洋葱。Pumpkin Pudding - 南瓜布丁。Indian Pudding - 印地安布丁。Salad-沙拉。
Other traditional Thanksgiving foods served with turkey are sweet potatoes, cranberries and pumpkin pie. Stores are said to sell more food at Thanksgiving than at any other time of the year. And many people eat more food at Thanksgiving than at any other time of the year.
