一、阅读理解

Pride and Prejudice for the Modern Woman
Let us imagine how Pride and Prejudice Austen's most famous work, might he updated, 200 years on.
Austen's popularity is rooted in her intelligence. But today she would certainly have had a very different life, as would her characters. Here's my own suggestion...
It is a truth finally and universally acknowledged that a single woman with brains deserves to have equal opportunities to men, however disadvantaged she may feel by sexism.
"My dear husband," said his hopeful wife one day, "have you heard that the local store, standing empty for so long, is taken over by a bright young businesswoman "
Her dull and indifferent (漠不关心的) husband replied that he had not.
"But it is, it is," she replied excitedly.
Mr Dull-Hushand made no reply.
"Don’t you want to know her plans " she cried with some impatience.
"We'll clearly you think it matters to your silly little head... so I d better listen. ''
"Well, my dear, the rumour (传言) is that she has already set up a string of successful businesses in northern England, though how a woman can know anything about that is beyond me. She will move in herself next month.
"What is her name "
"Bingley."
"Is she married or single "
"What a question! And none of your business. But her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys."
"How so How can it possibly affect them "
"My dear love: those lazy boys need something to wake them up. There are bound to be jobs going."
"Is that her point in settling here Surely as a woman she has simply taken a fancy to the place."
"Nonsense, my love, how little you've noticed the world has changed. She’s got a first-rate degree and some sort of business qualification, I'm told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call."
"Me No. Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all. She may even offer you a job."
"Oh, that’s not likely. These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it, I think I’ll go along all the same."
And Mrs Bennet went along, l hat was 10 years ago. She is now managing director of a FTSE-listed company.
...It would remain the case, of course, that Mrs. Bennet would be one of very few women on the company board, that her salary would be lower than her male colleagues, her bonus of a more "female" dimension and her lifespan (年限) among the city’s business leaders shorter than theirs. Still, she'd no doubt have enjoyed Davos — and might even have hobnobbed (攀谈) with influential figures.

Autumn means different things to different people. "It all depends on your personality," said British naturalist Richard Mabey. "Personality shapes your view of the season," he said. "You may see it as a fading-away, a packing-up (结束), or as a time of packing in another sense —the exciting gathering of resources before a long journey."
If this is true, perhaps it tells us a little about, for instance, Thomas Hood, the 19th Century English poet. About November, he wrote:
No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees
November!
On the other hand, another English poet John Keats, already sensing he was seriously ill, was inspired by a late September day to pen one of the most famous poems in the English language, To Autumn. He wrote to a friend afterwards that there was something comforting
and healing about it.
According to Richard Mabey, Keats has the biological evidence on his side. Autumn is not a time of slowing down, but a time of new beginnings and great movements of creatures. For example, just at the moment that Keat's "gathering swallows" (in To Autumn) are departing for Africa, millions of creatures are fleeing from the frozen north like Iceland, Greenland and Russia to winter along the east and south coasts of Britain. According to scientists, before falling, the leaves transfer their chlorophyll (叶绿素) and carbohydrates into the woody parts of the tree for safe keeping over winter. What remains is the natural antioxidants (防老剂) in the leaves: the yellow and orange carotenoids (类胡萝卜素), and another protective chemical specially produced for autumn, the bright-red anthocyanin (花青素). High colour is not a signal of deterioration (退化) and decline, but of detox (排毒的) ability and good health.
A century after Keats, the American poet Loren Eiseley wrote his journal: "Suppose we saw ourselves burning like maples in a golden autumn. And that we could break up like autumn leaves…dropping their substance like chlorophyll. Would not our attitude towards death be different "

A.they can't hear the freezing
B.they can't get enough water from the woody parts
C.chlorophyll and carbohydrates have been lost through leaves
D.chlorophyll and carbohydrates have come back to woody parts
3.From the passage we can learn that .
A.autumn has different faces in different people's eyes
B.John Keats was a good biologist as well as a poet
C.all creatures move from the cold north to Britain for winter
D.the three poets were only known for their poems about autumn
4.Which word can best describe Loren Eiseley's attitude towards autumn
A.Fearful.
B.Optimistic.
C.Doubtful.

Climate change has been blamed for killer hurricanes, sea level rise, and drought, but a new report suggests the effects of climate change might hit the world’s coffee supply. Up to 70 percent of the world’s coffee supply could be threatened over the next 66 years, according to a new study by researchers at England’s Royal Botanic Gardens.
Nearly 100 percent of the world's Arabica coffee growing regions could become unsuitable for the plant by 2080,according to the study. Beans from Arabica coffee plants account for about 70 percent of the world’s coffee, but the plant also has to be grown under strict weather conditions: they grow well at temperatures between 64 and 70 degrees Celsius, and are highly influenced by frost(霜) or temperatures higher than 73 degrees Celsius.
With temperatures estimated to increase by between 1.8 and 4 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, the fragile plant might become increasingly expensive and difficult to grow, especially in places such as Ethiopia and Kenya. In that worst case, nearly all of the world's native Arabica coffee would die out. Under more conservative(保守的) estimates, about 65 percent of the regions used to grow the coffee would become unsuitable for it. The evidence from coffee farmers and coffee growing regions around the world is that they are already suffering from the influences of increased warming.
Some farmers would likely be able to move their operations to other areas or would be able to overcome climate change with artificial (人工的) cooling techniques, but wild Arabica is generally considered to be much more suitable for making high-quality coffee.
If Arabica becomes impossible to raise in its native areas, it could do serious damage to the economies of the mainly third-world countries in which it grows. Coffee is the world, most popular drink and is the second most-traded product in the world, behind oil.
1.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.Climate change affects people in many ways.
B.More and more attention has been paid to climate change.
C.The world’s coffee supply could be threatened by climate change.
D.The growing conditions of Arabica coffee have been improved recently.
2.What can be learned from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3
A.According to the study, by 2080 nowhere can be suitable for Arabica coffee growing.
B.65 percent of the world's coffee gets raw materials from Arabica coffee plants.
C.Arabica coffee plants will grow well at temperatures lower than 60 degrees Celsius.
D.Coffee farmers are the biggest victims of climate change.
3.In order to solve the problem of Arabica coffee plants, some farmers _________.
A.would make efforts to produce high-quality coffee
B.would bring in artificial cooling techniques
C.would tend to move to some warm places
D.would grow more wild Arabica
4.What is the result if Arabica coffee has less production
A.Coffee will replace oil to be the first most-traded commodity.
B.Coffee is likely to become less popular than before.
C.Some countries will suffer great economic losses.
D.Farmers will plant other crops instead of coffee.
D
The style of writing poetry differs from person to person, long or short meters three or four lines to a stanza. But the great thing is, no matter how a poem is written it still holds great emotion. Some common techniques are used in poetry.
Onomatopoeia(拟声) is one of the easiest ways to learn and use. The definition of onomatopoeia is a word copying a sound. For example, “buzz”, “moo” and “beep”. This can be used in a variety of ways, giving the reader a “hands on” feel.
One technique that you might be familiar with is alliteration(头韵). This procedure is used by starting three or more words with the same sound An example of this would be “The crazy crackling crops”. The three words don’t have to have the exact same beginning to have this effect.
The next style is assonance(谐音). It is defined as a repetition of vowel sounds within syllables with changing consonants. This is also used in many different situations. One would be “tilting at windmills”. Notice the vowels within each syllable that sound the same.
Rhyming is probably the most well-known technique used. However, unlike popular belief it does not need to be within a poem to make it a poem.
As for similes(明喻),they are often used within poetry. They are an expression that compares one thing to another. A paradigm of this would be “The milk tasted like pickles”. This method is used in all forms of poetry and generally has the words “like” or “as”.
The last but not least style is metaphor(隐喻). A metaphor is a word or phrase used one way to mean another. Metaphors are sometimes hard to find and it takes some thinking to figure out, but they give writers more power to express their thoughts about a certain situation. In fact, not only is it found within the story, the story itself is a metaphor of memory and the constant reminder of the narrator's loss.
To have a full grasp of poetry, onomatopoeia, alliteration, assonance, rhyming, simile and metaphor should be household words.
1.To write a poem, you ________.
A.needn't start with three exact same sound words
B.should pay more attention to vowels and consonants
C.have to use the words such as “like” and “as”
D.should use one word to refer to another meaning
2.According to the text, the use of onomatopoeia makes ______.
A.poems sound more like a poem
B.readers experience a lifelike feeling
C.the writer expresses himself in a free way
D.readers have difficulty understanding a poem
3.Which of the following means “a word or phrase used one way to mean another”
A.Alliteration.
B.Rhyming.
C.Metaphor.
D.Assonance.
4.The underlined words “household words” may refer to words that ________.
A.describe the life of people at home

A pleasant surprise
For a long time, I had been looking for a piano of my own to practise on. There was a piano shop on the street along which I walked every day to school. Whenever I passed the shop, I would stop, looking at the beautiful piano standing in the comer of the shop window. How I had been dreaming, day and night to possess a piano like that!
Unfortunately, my father was just a clerk. Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove. In order to save money, even on cold winter days, my father would walk seven miles every day to get to work. He could never afford to buy me an expensive piano. Though he knew I wanted to play that piano so much, buying it was an extravagance (奢侈品) well beyond our family's income.
One day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano. However, to my surprise and disappointment, the piano had gone. I should not have been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. Tears filled my eyes when I thought of not being able to see that piano any more.
Disappointed, helpless and sad, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. After about an hour, I returned home. I had just entered our house, when I heard my mother calling me. I brushed away my tears and followed the sound of her voice into the dining room.
I could not believe my eyes.

As soon as my father appeared, I hugged him tightly.

六、答案:
I could not believe my eyes. The beautiful piano I had been longing for was standing there in front of me. Excitement and happiness filled my heart. I couldn't help crying and tears streamed down my face. My mother approached me, saying they knew the piano was the very thing I had dreamed about and my father had tried everything possible to realize my dream. I was on the point of saying something when the door opened.
As soon as my father appeared, I hugged him tightly. "Thank you, Dad!" I said. I could see a big smile on his wrinkled face. Regardless of the bad weather, my father went to work every day to make money. I could not imagine how much effort he had made! My father kissed me on the forehead, whispering that he had at last earned enough to buy the piano. Only then did I realize that no gift could measure up to a father's love.
