一、阅读理解
A
"I really wrote it for myself. It was what I found funny and what I liked." Those are the words of J. K. Rowling, the author of the enormously popular Harry Potter books. The quote refers to the first in a series of novels featuring a young character who has carved out a permanent place for his creator in the world of children's literature.
Joanne Kathleen Rowling was born in England in 1965, and wrote her first story at the age of six. She was in her mid-twenties when the idea for the Harry Potter novels came to her, during a long train ride. By the end of that journey, she said, the character of Harry and the school for wizards which he attends were more or less fully formed in her mind.
It would be several years, however, before the novel was completed. By that time, Rowling had been through a failed marriage. Living on welfare as a single parent, she wrote about Harry Potter while sitting in an Edinburgh café with her daughter asleep beside her. She could not have dreamed of the fame and success which Harry would bring her in the years to come.
Harry Potter is not an average superhero. He is skinny, wears glasses, and tends to worry a lot. Yet, he has captured the imagination of children and adults all over the world, and has introduced millions of people to the joy of reading.
Harry's appeal comes from his role as a very ordinary boy who finds himself in extraordinary situations. Orphaned as a baby, Harry spends about 10 years being mistreated by the awful relatives with whom he lives. On his 11th birthday, he learns that he possesses magical powers and is admitted for training to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The adventures of Harry and his friends at the school are superbly narrated by J. K. Rowling. She manages to lead her millions of readers deep into the supernatural world, while at the same time dealing with the fears and emotions of the ordinary human world. Many feel that this is the real magic of Harry Potter series.

Girl with a Pearl Earring has been part of the Mauritshuis' collection in the Hague since 1902 and is still on display at the museum. Rumours(传闻) have surrounded Johannes Vermeer's work ever since it was rediscovered in the late 19th century, and this painting still continues to generate interest, debate and imagination.
Although Vermeer was among the most successful artists working in Delft during the 17th century, he was almost completely forgotten after his death in 1675. Even during his lifetime, Vermeer's influence was mainly limited to Delft where he earned a reasonable living as a painter and art dealer. What's more, Vermeer's name is rarely mentioned in historical records and he left behind barely any other document about his career or personal history.
Very little is known about Girl with a Pearl Earring. However, art historians have decided several important facts about the painting. Recent research suggests that the black, negative space behind Vermeer's model was originally painted dark green.
Much like other artists of his time, Vermeer enjoyed painting figures dressed in Middle Eastern clothes. As his model is dressed in a turban(女用头巾), many art historians argue that this painting shouldn't be considered as a portrait(肖像画) at all. Instead, most scholars agree that Girl with a Pearl Earring belongs to a kind of painting called Tronie that began in the Low Countries around Vermeer's time. This type of artwork often portrays(描绘) characters rather than actual people. Girl with a Pearl Earring portrays a certain type of character—a girl in a fanciful dress, wearing an oriental turban and an improbably large pearl.
It is interesting to note that the painting only received its current name less than a century ago. While it is impossible to identify Vermeer's model, due to a complete lack of evidence, he may have asked one of his seven daughters to model for the painting.
1.What do we learn about Johannes Vermeer when he was alive
A.He lived a very hard life. B.He wasn't a gifted artist.
C.He liked writing about himself. D.He wasn't much known out of his city.
2.What made some scholars regard Girl with a Pearl Earring as a work of Tronie
A.The model's special expression. B.The model's unusual dress.
C.The model's unclear gesture. D.The model's background.
3.What can we know about the painting from the last paragraph
A.The model remains mysterious. B.Its name is still controversial.
C.It was severely damaged a century ago. D.It was inspired by a daughter of the artist.
4.What would be the best title for the text
A.Life Experiences of Johannes Vermeer B.The Model of Girl with a Pearl Earring
C.The Story Behind Girl with a Pearl Earring D.Characteristics of Johannes Vermeer's Painting

Children who spend more time outdoors may have a lower risk of becoming nearsighted, new research suggests.
In the study, researchers looked at about 1,900 schoolchildren. The scientists found that the kids who had been instructed to spend more time outdoors for three years were 23 percent less likely to develop nearsightedness during this time than those who had not been instructed.
The researchers selected six schools and required the children, whose average age was 7 at the start of the study, to attend one additional 60-minute class of outdoor activities during each school day for three years. The parents of these children were also encouraged to join their children for outdoor activities after school, especially during weekends and holidays. The other children, from another six schools, continued their usual activity patterns. After three years, 30. 4 percent of the kids in the intervention (干预) group became nearsighted, compared with 38. 5 percent of the kids in the other group.
It is not clear exactly why spending more time outside would benefit children's eyesight, the researchers said. However, some research has suggested that the higher levels of light intensity found outdoors may increase the release of the chemical dopamine (多巴胺) of the eye. In turn, dopamine is known to restrain (抑制) the type of growth in the eye that is associated with nearsightedness.
Based on the new results, the researchers recommend that children spend more time outdoors because of the potential benefits to their eyesight. However, it's important to protect kids' skin and eyes from UV light, which can be damaging.
1.What did the children in the intervention group do during each school day
A.They attended an extra class of outdoor activities.
B.They just continued to do their usual activities.
C.The spent one hour in doing eye exercises.
D.They participated in outdoor activities with parents.
2.What can be inferred about the chemical dopamine
A.It can contribute to poor sight. B.It can damage people's brain.
C.It is beneficial to eyesight. D.It means low levels of light intensity.
3.What may be discussed in the following paragraph
A.How to design outdoor activities for kids.
B.How to prevent kids becoming nearsighted.
C.How to protect kids' skin and eyes from UV light.
D.How to encourage kids to join in outdoor activities.

Every year in May, art galleries and museums prepare shows to honour Leonardo da Vinci, who died in France on May 2, 1519. He is remembered as one of the greatest artists and the most creative thinkers of all time. His most famous paintings are Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
Recently, researchers have been studying a painting—Landscape 8P, which they think is Leonardo's earliest-known artwork. They used special lighting to study the artwork and discovered there were two images(图像), not one. One drawing is on the back of the piece, which dates back to August 5, 1 473.
The drawing on the front was painted when Leonardo was 21 years old. It shows a river valley and a castle outside the city of Florence. There is little left of the drawing on the back, perhaps because it was wiped off. Only a bridge over a river can be seen. But there is writing on both sides.
The writing on the front gives the date and goes from right to left. Some people would call this "mirror writing". It's a way Leonardo often wrote in his notebooks. The writing on the back goes from left to right and tells an agreement, probably to produce a work of art.
Cecilia Frosinini is an art historian. She said, "By looking at his writing, including that from this drawing, we can see his right-handed handwriting is educated and well done."
Experts compared the two handwriting samples(样本) and said they were both made by Leonardo. They show he could write well using his left hand or his right hand.
The drawing is known as Landscape 8P from its number in an art list. It is part of an exhibit at Italy's Uffizi Gallery. The gallery director, Eike Schmidt, said by studying the drawing researchers gave us a new way of looking at Leonardo's drawing technique and his abilities in writing.
1.Which of the following mentioned in the text has been studied by researchers recently
A.Mona Lisa. B.Landscape 8P.
C.Mirror-writing. D.The Last Supper.
2.What does the writing on the back probably show
A.A statement about the painting. B.An introduction about Leonardo.
C.An agreement to produce a painting. D.Something about the city of Florence.
3.What can we learn about Leonardo from the researchers' study
A.He could write with either of his hands. B.He did badly in right-handed handwriting.
C.He wasn't good at writing with his left hand. D.He taught himself to write with his right hand.
4.What's Eike Schmidt's attitude towards the research
A.Unclear. B.Indifferent. C.Doubtful. D.Positive.

六、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Once upon a time in my family, the last Saturday in November was the start of our annual big tamale (墨西哥粽子)-making party. We made tamales to share with friends and neighbors.
Preparation began with Daddy and the cleaning of the com husks (外皮). First he boiled them and left them in the water overnight. No husk passed inspection without being soft enough for being folded. The next day, the rest of us got to work. My brothers and uncles were on hand for cleanup duty. And there was much to clean up as we women prepared the dough (生面团) made of com. We also prepared the meat for the filling. The dough had to be spread evenly across the husk, and each tamale had to be folded carefully so it would not split open during the steaming. According to the long-standing tradition — at least in my West Texas family — no one was allowed to leave the kitchen during the steaming. This could ruin the process.
I thought the family tamale-making party would go on forever, but to continue a family tradition, you needed to have family. Mine had changed forever. My father, two of my brothers and my uncle died. Mom and I spent months in a state of sad loss. At that day friends asked, "Are we going to get tamales this year " Passing tamales out to friends was one of the great joys of the season after all. But we couldn't face it. Eventually, as years went by, people stopped asking.
One afternoon, my mother and I pushed an empty shopping cart through the supermarket. I rounded the comer into the next room and found her standing in front of a display: packages of dough, bags of corn husks, dried spices — all the ingredients for a perfect tamale. "It's time," Mom said. I knew she was right. We set aside a Saturday to spend in the kitchen, just the two of us, alone with our thoughts.
Paragraph 1:
But as we laid everything out I fell into the old routine.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
This year we still make preparations for tamales and our kitchen will be crowded once again. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Tony,
I'm happy to receive your letter and know you're coming to China.
Both the two trips to the Yangtze River and our capital Beijing are highly recommended. Personally, I prefer the tour along the Yangtze River, the longest river and one of the mother rivers of Chinese civilization. You can learn a lot about the history of China and Chinese people. Moreover, with many well-known sightseeing spots, the scenery along the river is amazing and is bound to take your breath away. That's why I think the trip along the Yangtze River will be a better choice.
Hope you'll have a good time in China.

六、答案:
Paragraph 1:
But as we laid everything out I fell into the old routine. But we were for cleanup duty ourselves as we went along. Of course Daddy wasn't there to deal with the corn husks, and Mom and I hadn't touched them! They hadn't been cleaned; they hadn't been in the water. Mom lit a candle for our relatives and we made the filling and fold the tamales. Neither of us had stepped out of the busy kitchen until the steaming was completed. By the end of the day, we had many beautiful tamales to share with friends and neighbors. It was a success, full of loving memories from the past and hopeful wishes for tomorrow.
Paragraph 2:
This year we still make preparations for tamales and our kitchen will be crowded once again. My great-niece wants to learn the family tradition. Rule number one: No one leaves the kitchen during the steaming! Life may change, but our family is forever bound together by love, memories and our favorite dish.
