Barbara McClintock was one of the most important scientists of the twentieth century. She made important discoveries about genes (基因) and chromosomes (染色体).
Barbara McClintock was born in 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut. Her family moved to the Brooklyn area of New York City in 1908. Barbara was an active child with interests in sports and music. She also developed an interest in science.
She studied science at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Barbara was among a small number of undergraduate students to receive training in genetics in 1921. Years later, she noted that few college students wanted to study genetics.
Barbara McClintock decided to study botany, the scientific study of plants, at Cornell University. She completed her undergraduate studies in 1923. McClintock decided to continue her education at Cornell. She completed a master's degree in 1925. Two years later, she finished all her requirements for a doctorate.
McClintock stayed at Cornell after she completed her education. She taught students botany. The 1930s was not a good time to be a young scientist in the United States. The country was in the middle of the Great Depression. Millions of Americans were unemployed. Male scientists were offered jobs. But female geneticists were not much in demand.
An old friend from Cornell, Marcus Rhoades, invited McClintock to spend the summer of 1941 working at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. It is a research center on Long Island, near New York City. McClintock started a temporary (临时的) job in the genetics department. A short time later, she accepted a permanent position in the laboratory. This gave her the freedom to continue her research without having to teach or repeatedly ask for economic aid.
By the 1970s, her discoveries had had an effect on everything from genetic engineering to cancer research. McClintock won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1983 for her discovery of the ability of genes to change positions on chromosomes. She was the first American woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize.

A.Because of her research on botany.
B.Because of her discoveries about genes and chromosomes.
C.Because of her contribution to genetic engineering.
D.Because of her unshared work in the laboratory.
4.Where is the passage likely to appear
A.In a philosophy textbook. B.In a history paper.

Does just thinking about stepping inside a gym make you feel exhausted If so, here's some good news. One of the world's largest studies on physical activity has found that doing household chores (家务活) can be just as effective as running or working out when it comes to cutting your risk of heart disease and extending your life.
A team of researchers discovered that people enjoyed the same health benefits whether they were going to the gym, walking to work or doing household chores. Indeed, performing 30 minutes of any kind of physical activity a day, five days a week, could reduce your risk of dying from any causes by 28% and your rate of heart disease by 20%. And, again, the positive effects were the same whether someone was working out, walking or doing chores such as mopping the floor or gardening.
"Walking for at least 30 minutes most days of the week has a massive benefit, and high levels of physical activity is associated with even lower risk of illness," the lead researcher Scott Lear said about the findings. "By including low and middle income countries in this study, we were able to determine the benefit of activities such as having an active job or even doing household chores," Lear said. He noted that 1 in 4 people worldwide do not get 30 minutes of exercise a day, five times a week.
Interestingly enough, the Canadian study found no ceiling(上限) on the benefits of exercise and "no risks associated with extremely high levels of physical activity", defined as more than 2,500 minutes, or more than 41 hours per week. Lear said that those who spent more than 750 minutes walking quickly each week lowered their risk of premature death by 36%.
1.What can we infer about the study from Paragraph 1
A.Women should do more housework than men.
B.Doing housework may help to live long and healthily.
C.People with heart disease had better do less housework.
D.Doing housework makes people feel less tired than going to the gym.
2.What does Scott Lear say about his findings on health
A.Sitting long will take health away.
B.Exercise will make life meaningful.
C.It's a good idea to walk less than 30 minutes a day.
D.High levels of physical activity can reduce disease risk.
3.What is the study in the passage mainly supported by
A.Statistics. B.Voices. C.Examples. D.Experiments.
4.Which is the best title for the text
A.Take Exercise for Better Strength and Balance
B.Risks of High Levels of Physical Activity
C.Doing Household Chores May Be a Secret to Living Longer
D.Two Factors that Determine the Benefits of Activities

Climate change leads to a threat to the world's sandy beaches, and as many as half of them could disappear by 2100, a new study has found. Even by 2050 some coastlines could be unrecognizable from what we see today, with 10% to 12% facing severe erosion (侵蚀).
Using updated sea level rise predictions, the researchers analyzed how beaches around the world would be in the future with higher seas and more damaging storms. They also considered natural processes like wave erosion, as well as human factors ——like coastal building developments, all of which can affect a beach's health. The study found that the sea level rise is expected to outweigh these other factors, and that the more heat-trapping gases humans put into the atmosphere, the worse the influences on the world's beaches are likely to be.
It's hard to overstate just how important the world's beaches are. They cover more than one third of the world's coastlines, and protect coastal areas from storms. Beaches are also the important economic engine, supporting relaxation, tourism and other activities. And in some areas, the beach is more than a vacation destination. In places like Australia, life near the coast revolves around (以……为中心) the beach for much of the year.
Some of the world's most popular beaches are already taking action. Places like Miami Beach are trucking in thousands of tons of sand to patch up(修补) the badly eroded shoreline, while others have built sea walls and breakwaters in an attempt to hold precious sand in place. But the financial and environmental costs of these projects are huge, and scientists say rising seas and more powerful storms, supercharged by a warmer climate, will make this a losing battle.
However, the researchers did find that humans have some control over what happens to the world's beaches. If the world's governments are able to stick to modest cuts in heat-trapping gas pollution, the researchers found that a lot of projected beach losses by 2050 could be prevented.
1.Which may be the biggest contributor to severe beach erosion
A.Damaging storms. B.Wave erosion. C.Coastal buildings. D.The sea level rise.
2.What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A.It is hard to protect coastal beaches.
B.One third of storms break near beaches.
C.Beaches are of great significance to human life.
D.Most Australians live on beach tourism.
3.What does the underlined word "this" refer to in Paragraph 4
A.Popularizing the beaches. B.Holding sand in place.
C.Reducing the projects' costs. D.Stopping global warming.
4.What is the best title for the text
A.Half beaches could disappear by 2100
B.Climate change is doing harm to human life
C.The beach is more than a vacation destination
D.Governments are taking action to fight wave erosion

六、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The moon was hanging low in the South Carolina sky as Misha finished loading her truck. Then she led Gandalf to his cage in the back. It was 3 a. m. on Tuesday March 20. Misha's husband Chuck came out to see her off. "Don't expect to go up there and find that lost boy in the woods, because it's just not going to happen," Chuck said. As a retired firefighter, he had seen more incredible things than a kid surviving three cold nights in the mountains, but he didn't want his wife to be disappointed in herself or her dog.
Three days earlier, 12-year-old Michael disappeared suddenly from his troop's campsite in Doughton Park. A massive search party had been sent out to find the boy that had been missing in the woods for three days, but there was barely a trace of the boy. They were about to lose hope when one dog named Gandalf, stepped in.
Misha and Gandalf, her two-year-old dog, had trained for a year with the South Carolina Search and Rescue Dog Association. But this was their first real job. Doughton Park was located in a bowl on the side of a mountain. It was covered with heavy forest, where slippery moss (苔藓) and waterfall spray threatened one's footing and thundering streams could drown out a child's cry for help.
Misha and her teammates arrived at the staging area around 7 a. m. on Tuesday, day four. The wind was coming toward them then around the shoulder of a cliff (悬崖). Gandalf was about 30 yards ahead, working on the bank of the stream where it turned beneath a wall of rock. Misha saw him quickly lift his head. Was that the sign she'd been waiting for Gandalf ran to the left, which was out of sight behind the cliff face. Misha tried to climb up the track behind him.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Paragraph 1:
All of a sudden came the bark of Gandalf.
