An earthquake is literally an earth-shattering experience! There you are enjoying an afternoon nap, having a cup of coffee in the morning,or even sleeping on a cold winter night when—WHAM!—the entire crockery(陶器) shelf collapses, and all the plates and cups break into pieces.A painting on the wall nearly knocks you down as it falls.
What should one do in an earthquake The prime-time(黄金时间的) news gives no warning, nor is there a time of year, like the monsoon(季风) season, when an earthquake always occurs.Unlike a tornado or hurricane, there is no known way of predicting an earthquake.
Though about 500,000 earthquakes occur each year, only 100 of them cause damage! However,an earthquake can strike any time of the day or night,so it needs to be prepared for when you have the misfortune of being caught in the middle of one.
If you’re indoors, stay indoors, unless you’re on the ground floor, where you can easily run outside. The best thing to do if you’re indoors is to hide under a strong piece of furniture like a bed or desk.Do not head for the stairway if you’re living on an upper storey, because stairways can collapse.
If you’re driving, get out of traffic and stop on a wide and open road.Do not stop on a bridge,or in another case, under one.Stay inside your car until the shaking stops. Before you restart driving, look out for fissures(裂缝),breaks in the road, and bumps or cracks.Inside your home,be careful not to turn on the gas until you’re sure the cylinder(气罐) is safe, and there is no leak.
Avoid using your telephone unless there’s an emergency. You could be occupying lines that are needed by other people.
Lastly,if you’re not trapped or seriously hurt,do not expect fire fighters, army or police to help you. They may be busy rescuing people in greater need than you!

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways:they provide him with wood and other products;they give him shade;and they help to prevent droughts and floods.
Unfortunately,in many parts of the world, man has not realised that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees,he has cut them down in large numbers.
Two thousand years ago,a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became bare and poor. When the empire fell into pieces, the country found itself faced by floods and starvation.
Even where a government realises the importance of a plentiful supply of trees,it is difficult sometimes to make the people realise this. They cut down the trees but are too careless to plant and look after new trees. So unless the government has a good system of control,or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear.
This does not only mean that there will be fewer trees. The results are even more serious:for where there are trees, their roots break the soil up,allowing the rain to sink in,and also bind the soil. This prevents the soil from being washed away. But where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, and this causes floods and the rain carries away the rich top soil in which crops grow. When all the top soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.
28.Trees are useful to man mainly in three ways, the most important of which is that they can .
A.keep him from the hot sunshine
B.protect him from droughts and floods

31.The underlined word “bind” in paragraph 5 means “ ”.

Seeing a volcano eruption is a wonderful experience, and you can really feel the heat by climbing to the summit(山顶) of Pacaya for a close-up view. There are guided tours every day up this highly active volcano from Antigua.Giving travellers a chance to see Mother Nature at her most power.
Pacaya is an easy drive from Antigua,a beautiful city with many colourful houses along its old streets that are turned into artworks during its famous festivals. No matter when you come to Antigua, you won’t miss the Pacaya-tour companies.
But climbing Pacaya is not an easy job:it is 2,560 metres high, and reaching the summit takes two to three hours of seemingly one-step-forward and two-step-back movements. As you climb, you hear the dull sounds of eruptions high above.Steaming, hot remains from recent eruptions begin to line the path as you near the active summit:the Mckenney Cone(火山锥).Just as though you were going to walk over to the edge of the cone, the road turns to the left and up to the relative safety of the old, inactive summit.
Many tours are timed so that you arrive at the cone of the volcano in plenty of time for sunset and the full contrast between the erupting red lava(熔岩) and the darkening sky.On a good day the view from the summit is extremely exciting. The active mouth boils, sending red lava over its sides, and once in a while shoots hot streams up to 100 metres into the air. There is a strong bad smell in the air even if you take care to be upwind of the cone.As evening turns deeper into the night, the burning lava quietly falls down the side of the volcano. For you, too,it is time to get down.
32.What is the main purpose of this passage
A.To attract tourists to Pacaya.
B.To describe the beauty of Pacaya.
C.To introduce guided tours to Pacaya.
D.To explain the power of nature at Pacaya.
33.Antigua is an island .
A.where people can enjoy cultural festivals
B.where the daring Pacaya tour starts
C.that gives a close-up view of Pacaya
D.that is famous for its tour companies
34.Climbing to the McKenney Cone,people will .
A.walk directly to the active summit
B.hear the continuous loud noise from above
C.make greater efforts than to other summits
D.see a path lined with remains of earlier eruptions
35.Many tours are timed for people to .
A.get down the mountain in time when night falls
B.avoid the smell from the upwind direction of the cone
C.enjoy the fantastic eruption against the darkening sky
D.appreciate the scenery of the 2,560-metre-high mountain

The cheerful girl,Jenny, with golden hair was almost five.Waiting with her mother at the checkout stand, she saw a necklace of shining white pearls in a pink metal box.Quickly the mother checked the back of the little metal box and then looked back into the begging blue eyes of her little girl’s upturned face.“A dollar and ninety-five cents. That’s almost $2.If you really want it,I’ll think of some extra housework for you and in no time you can save enough money to buy it for yourself.Besides, you might get another dollar bill from Grandma on your birthday a week away.”
After dinner back home, she did more housework and even she asked the neighbour for housework for ten cents. On her birthday,Grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at least she had enough money to buy the cheap necklace from the dime store(廉价商店).
Jenny loved her pearl necklace. She wore it everywhere. The only time she took it off was when swimming.
Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed,he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night when he finished the story,he asked Jenny,“Do you love me ”
“Oh,Daddy. You know that I love you.”
“Then give me your necklace.”
“Oh,Daddy, not my pearl necklace. But you can have my Barbie doll—the one you gave me.She’s my favourite.”
“That’s okay,Honey.Daddy loves you.Good night.”And he brushed her cheek with a kiss.
Daddy repeated the same request about a week after the story time. However,Jenny refused and wouldn’t give up her necklace to her daddy.
A few nights later when her daddy came in,Jenny was sitting on her bed, waiting for her father.
With tears in his own eyes,Jenny’s kind daddy reached out one hand to take the cheap necklace.
