Most students hate their endless homework. The students from Class 2, Senior 2 of the High School Affiliated to Peking University certainly did so before they published their own collection of English novels at home.
Their small book contains stories about a holy (神圣的) war, the happy life of a self-taught artist and the story of a laid-off worker who devoted his last breath to playing his beloved accordion (手风琴). The book becomes an instant hit on campus. About 3,000 copies have been sold and the class is already working on the second volume.
"We're up to our ears in homework. Exercises and exams make us out of breath. But to do something creative and full of imagination is such a great achievement," said Yu Xiaoxiao, 16. "I took the writing as an ordinary homework at the beginning, but after I finished the first part of my story, I could not help but let it flow," said Wang An, who wrote "Accordion".
Inspired by "Lord of the Rings", Jiang Lu wrote his story about magic wins between angels from the light and the dark side. "The main message of the story was to look at the balance of the world. Both dark and light angels fight with love as their weapons. I want to tell people that selfish love might bring hate," Jiang said.
"I was shocked by their work and felt so proud to be the editor of my students' book," said Nathaniel Timmermann, the oral English teacher at the school. Liu Xiuqin, an English teacher, started the project by asking students to write whatever was in their mind every week. "They have performed beyond expectation," Liu said. "They wrote interesting stories and their English has improved after they started to express their real minds."
"We never imagined that our homework would be so popular and profitable (盈利的). We sell the novels at five yuan, but many teachers pay more to encourage us," said Yuan Mengyao.

With the development of modern, fight weight materials and computer technology, the promise of flying cars may be about to be fulfilled. Many inventors and companies are working on their versions of flying cars that they hope will revolutionize personal travel.
The front runner in the race to build the first workable flying car is Paul Moiler, who has spent forty years building and testing personal aircraft. His current version of flying car is the Skycar, the M400, which reaches 400 mph and has a range of 750 miles. Its fuel mileage will match that of a medium-sized car, getting 20 miles to one gallon of gasoline. In accidents, it would use parachutes and both interior and exterior air bags to ensure a soft landing. So far there is only one copy of the M400 for personal use. Moiler predicts a commercial version of the Skycar will be available in ten or fifteen years.
Macro Industries of Huntsville, Alabama is developing a flying car called the Skyrider X2-R. The X2-R has a maximum speed of 355 mph with a range of 800 miles. Macro Claims that the production version of their flying car will be available in about five years.
The CarterCopter, being developed by Carter Aviation Technologies, can fly at five hundred miles an hour. Company founder, Jay Carter, does not consider creating a production model in the near future. He does suggest, however, that when the first production model is available, it can take a handful of passengers between nearby cities, beating commercial jets (喷气式飞机) because the trip would be between downtown heliports, removing the need to go to distant airports.
All of these flying cars Will never get off the ground unless there is a tracking system to control them while they are in flight. Fortunately, NASA has developed the Highway in the Sky. Using satellites and global positioning system, it will provide a heads-up display for a pilot. It will be much like a video game, creating a kind of virtual box in which the pilot has to keep his vehicle from crashing into other flying cars.
60. From the passage, we can learn that ________.
A. Paul Moiler is the first to experiment on flying cars
B. the Skycar consumes less fuel than a medium-sized car
C. the Skycar is equipped with effective protective equipment
D. the Skycar is the fastest flying car ever invented
61. So far, if people want to experience flying cars, they can only turn to ________.
A. the Skycar, the M400 B. the Skyrider X2-R

B. They are not suitable for short-distance flights.
C. Passengers will be charged too much for taking them.
D. They sometimes waste time and cause the trouble of traveling long distance.
63. What is the Highway in the Sky?
A. It is a new type of flying car. B. It is a kind of video game.

It doesn't feel like it, but we got a rise this week. The sliding price of oil, which made OPEC decide to announce a production cut, has put money in the pockets of consumers, who worry about the world-wide recession (经济衰退).
The high price of gasoline has greatly changed driving patterns, perhaps permanently. "We are seeing changes in habits." says Julian Lee from the Center for Global Energy Studies in London. People now prefer to buy small cars instead of gas-consuming SUVs. If we see this change it becomes a much longer term issue with long-term demand destruction.
In the short term, there's simple math. The price slide could save drivers a great deal of money. However, because the U.S. is out of its peak summer driving season, there's not toe much of an encouragement to drive a lot more just because gas prices are down.
Oil demand in the U.S. has dropped 10% in the few weeks, continuing a year long trend. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Americans drove 15 billion fewer miles in August, or 5.6% less than they did the year before. DOT says it's the largest ever year-to-year decline recorded in a single month.
Due to falling worldwide demand, oil price dropped to its lowest level in more than a year. For months leaders of oil-rich countries have watched nervously as world oil prices have been more than 50% lower than the all-time high in July.
All of this spells disasters for OPEC. Iran and Venezuela have pushed fellow OPEC members to make big enough cuts in production to change the plunge in prices in Vienna on Thursday for OPEC's emergency meeting. OPEC countries' method of fixing their combined out-put has for years hugely influenced world prices, since OPEC's 13 members account for about one-third of the world' s total oil supplies.
64. According to the passage, "we got a rise this week" because ________.
A. the consumers seldom use their cars at present
B. we'll face financial problems in the recession
C. the OPEC countries will buy us gasoline for cars
D. we'll spend much less money on gasoline for ears
65. In the writer's opinion, the reason people prefer to small ears is that ________.
A. small ears are more beautiful than SUVs
B. SUVs will cause much more air pollution
C. small cars cost much less on gasoline than SUVs
D. SUVs waste too much energy and pollute the air
66. The following statements are all true EXCEPT ________.
A. Americans drove about 15 billion fewer miles this year
B. oil demand in America has been dropping for one year
C. "DOT" stands for the U.S. Department of Transportation
D. more ears are on the road in summer than in other seasons
67. The underlined word "plunge" in the last paragraph most probably means ________.
A. the action of pulling up B. delaying or putting off
C. sudden moving downward D. severe financial problem
66.A(解析:选A。

Driving to a friend' s house on a recent evening, I was attracted by the sight of the full moon rising just above my friend's rooftops, I stopped to watch it for a few moments, thinking about what a pity it was that most city people usually miss sights like this because we spend most of our lives indoors, Myself included!
My friend had also seen it. He grew up living in a forest in Europe, and the moon meant a lot to him then. It had touched much of his life.
I know the feeling. Last December I took my seven-year-old daughter to the mountainous jungle of northern India with some friends. We stayed in a forest rest-house with no electricity or running hot water. Our group had campfire outside every night, and indoors when it was too cold outside. The moon grew to its fullest during our trip. Between me and the high mountains lay three or four valleys. Not a light shone in them and not a sound could be heard. It was one of the quietest places I have ever known, a bottomless well of silence. And above me was the full moon, which struck me deeply.
Today our lives are filled with glass, metal, plastic and fibre-glass. We have televisions, cell phones, electricity, heaters and ovens, air-conditioners, cars, computers ... Struggling through traffic that evening at the end of a tiring day, most of it spent indoors, I thought: before long, I would like to live in a small cottage. There I will grog' vegetables and read books and walk in the mountains and perhaps write, but not in anger. I may become an old man there, and wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled and measure out my life in coffee spoons. But I will be able to walk outside on a cool silent night and touch the moon.
68. The writer managed to convince us that ________.
A. he was so touched by the moon B. he enjoyed pleasures of modem life
C. he was afraid of a bottomless well of silence D. he planned to break away from modem life
69. The writer felt sorry for himself because ________.
A. there was too much pollution B. he often missed the fullest moon
C. he didn' t adapt to modem inventions D. there were many accidents on the road
70. What impressed the writer most in the mountainous jungle of northern India? ,
A. No modern equipment. B. Complete silence.
C. Campfires in the moon. D. The high mountains.
71. Modern things( in Paragraph 4)are mentioned mainly to ________.
A. show that the writer likes city life very much
B. tell us that people greatly benefit from modern life
C. explain that people have less chances to enjoy nature
D. show that we can also enjoy nature at home through them

Consumers at the Whale Inside Dark Restaurant are led by a waiter with night-vision Goggles (夜视镜). Inside Dark Restaurant in Beijing, a table of 30 diners was getting quarrelsome. "I am touching your head ! "said one, like a talkative child. "Who just said that?" another replied. Such voices floated across the 90-plus-soat restaurant, but no one could see who was talking, except the waiters, who were equipped with military-grade night-vision goggles.
In the new dining, restaurants are turning off the lights to focus attention on the food. It seems to have started in Zurich and has since spread all over the world, with diners sitting in unlit rooms and lately, being served by waiters in night-version goggles. The idea is that by depriving one sense( sight), other senses are becoming strong.
Darkness has other benefits. "Chinese people tend to be shy," said Chert Long, who owns Whale Inside Dark, which opened in January. "People have found it easy to break the ice here."
The first dark restaurant, opened in Zurich in t999, had a simple intention. The goal was creating jobs for the blind and handicapped people, said the manager. The concept has been popular in Paris, London, Sydney and elsewhere, offering new variations on sight deprivation, by which people can experience a lot in a completely dark condition.
In Beijing, the Whale Inside Dark Restaurant is not only about heightening the sense of taste, but lowering social pressure. It is popular with Internet daters, who met on matchmaking Websites that are spreading throughout China.
Eating in the dark is not without its troubles. Instead of family-style dining, food is served on single-serving plates. When each dish arrives, the server guides your hand to the plate and offers helpful tips like "this course is eaten with a spoon."
The style seems to be working. "People feel a lot more comfortable when they can't be seen by others, " said Mr. Chen, who is opening a second branch in Shanghai, "Couples get to know each other without seeing others' faces."
72. The passage is mainly talking about ________.
A. a new way to break the ice B. dining in the dark
C. a healthy dining style D. the advantages of the darkness
73. The advantages of the dark restaurant include the following EXCEPT ________.
A. lowering social pressure B. breaking the ice easily for some shy persons
C. heightening the sense of taste D. becoming an Internet daters' centre
74. What does the underlined word "unlit" mean in the second paragraph?
A. Dark. B. Crowded. C. Quiet. D. Colorful.
75. It is implied but NOT stated that ________.
A. only Internet daters like to eat in the dark restaurant
B. people can understand the blind people's world better after visiting the dark restaurant
C. only the waiters with military-grade night-vision goggles can see what happens there
D. consumers are easy to get angry in the dark restaurant
