Analysis of teaching content This part presents a diary reflecting the theme of unit 1. It tells a student’s experiences and feelings on the first day of high school. Reading activities guide students to explore the theme and master reading strategies.
Teaching objectives By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: ●Knowledge objectives: 1. Master the basic structure of diary. 2. Get familiar with the context and get the main idea. 3. Find out relevant details and sort out the order of plot development. ●Ability objectives: 1. Master two reading strategies: skimming and scanning. 2. Guide students to connect with real life based on the article and use the relevant knowledge to tell their experiences on the first day of high school. ●Emotional objective: Guide students to understand the meaning of “Well begun, half done” and establish self-confidence in high school life.
Teaching important and difficult points Important points: 1. To cultivate students’ good reading habits. 2. To improve students’ confidence in high school life. Difficult points: 1. To guide students to finish the task of speaking after discussion. 2. To help students keep taking notes.
Teaching methods In this lesson, communicative approach and cooperation-study method are adopted in order to improve students’ reading skills and their oral English.

Step 1 Lead-in （5 min） 1) Look at some pictures of high school together. 2) Ask them a question: what do you want to include in your diary about your first day at senior high 3) Lead in the passage of reading. 1) Look at some pictures and name it. 2) Answer the quesstion. 3) Think about the structure of diary. To raise the interests of the students, and lead to the topic of the unit: high school life.
Step 2 While-reading （20 min） 1) Lead Ss to analyse the structure of diary through the passage. 2) Ask Ss to read the passage and find out what the author wrote in his diary. 3) Guide Ss to skim the passage and divide it into four parts. 4) Complete Meng Hao’s experiences with expressions from the passage. 5) Remind Ss to take notes if necessary. 1) Know about the structure of diary. 2) Read the passage and find out what the author wrote in his diary. 3) Read the passage again and divide it into four parts. 4) Read the passage and fill in the blanks. 5) Take notes if necessary. 1) To get familiar with high school life and broaden their horizon. 2) To learn about diary. 3) To use skimming to get the main idea of each part. 4) To understand the passage deeply. 5) To form a good habit of note-taking.
Step 3 After-reading （15 min） Ask the main idea of this passage and complete Activity 4. Raise two questions and ask Ss to have a discussion. (1) What is your understanding of the saying “Well begun, half done” (2) What happened on your first day at senior high Share your experiences and feelings with the class. 1) Get the main idea of the passage and complete Activity 4. 2) Have a discussion with their partner and try to express themselves freely about two questions. To encourage students to talk by their own and to improve their oral speaking skills.
Step 4 Summary （5 min） 1) Review the passage. 2) Enlighten Ss that they should work hard and be confident in their future life at senior high. 1) Retell the passage according to cue words and get a better understanding of this text. 2) Try to apply these characters to their daily life and become an excellent student. To summarize the contents of the class and to improve their confidence in high school life.
Homework 1) Write down your experiences and feelings of the first day at senior high. 2) Review the language points of reading part. 1) To improve Ss’ writing skills. 2) To prepare for the next class.
