As the fifth of seven children, I went to the same public school as my three elder sisters and brother. Every year, each child from the third grade took part in an old school tradition-the plant sale held in early May, just before Mother's Day.
That year I was old enough to take part in it. I wanted to surprise my mother, but I didn't have any money. I told my elder sister about it and she gave me some money. When I arrived at the plant sale, I carefully chose my favorite. I watched each plant seriously to make sure that I could find the best geranium(天竺葵). After school, with the help of my sister I bid it on the neighbor's porch(门廊). On Mother's Day, I remember how bright my mother's eyes were and how elated she was at my gift.
The year I was fifteen, my younger sister reached the third, grade. She told me that, she wanted to surprise our mother. Like my elder sister did for me, I gave her some money. And she bought the same gift and we hid it in the same place. When she gave the gift to my mother, I watched them full of pride and happiness. My mother noticed me watching and gave me a soft and secret smile. With a shock at my heart, I smiled back.
I wonder how my mother could pretend (假装) to be surprised at the same sixth child, but as I watched her eyes, I knew she was not pretending.

Where you sit and how you fit
___36___ For more than seventy years, researchers and teachers have studied the link between the place where students choose to sit in class and what they are like as people and learners. Where do you usually decide to sit Have you ever really thought about the reasons for your decision
___37___ But is this really true Well, some researchers say it is not. In fact, shy students often choose the back row because it is fare away from the teacher and they don’t want to answer questions. At the back, students probably won’t speak much, but in big classrooms, it can be hard to see the board and hear what the teacher is saying. This could be the reason why students who sit here often get lower grades on tests and exams. For students with poor eyesight or hearing, a seat at the back of the classroom is not a good choice.
___38___ However, they like watching and listening rather than joining in. These students are usually also very good at taking notes. Next time you miss a class, borrow notes from someone who sits here. On the sides of the classroom you will generally find modest and thoughtful people. These people usually get good grades in school and are interested in learning.
___39___ Then the statistics (统计数据) say you probably like your teacher. You probably also have a good relationship with your classmates. Caring, outgoing, and cheerful people usually sit in the middle. They are normally serious about learning and feel disappointed with low grades on tests and exams.
___40___ Students who sit here usually want to discuss things with the teacher and are often very interested in the subject. They want to be in the best place to see and hear everything the teacher does and says. The only problem with sitting here is that it can be difficult to see and hear what other students do and say in class. So, if you really want to hear what everyone says in class, choose a different place to sit.
根据短文内容, 从方框中选出五个句子填入文中空缺处, 使短文内容完整正确.
A. You probably sit right at the front of the class if you’re longing for knowledge.B. Research suggests that the seat you choose in the classroom says a lot about you and your personality.C. Do you sit in the middle of the classroom D. This means it’s a good idea to sit in a different place every day.E. People often think that students who sit at the back are lazy.F. If you had only 45 minutes to stay with your family a day, what would you do Watching TV or eating
According to the latest survey about family life in Britain, many people probably do both at the same time. The results of the survey of 3,000 children and parents signal (暗示) a worrying problem: The family relationship is becoming worse.
Some experts (专家) say that the problem is caused by a “family-unfriendly culture”. The results show that most families get together for only 45 minutes a day. And most of the time is spent either in front of the TV or eating.
Sally Brown, a 15-year-old girl, said, “There are two girls in my family — my sister and I. Our parents never play with us and they don’t think they should do this. When we go outside and play with other children, our mother usually does housework or cooks. When our father gets back home, we have dinner together. And then we go out to play again after having helped wash the dishes. Our parents don’t always help us do anything we can — sometimes they even encourage us to do something difficult on our own. They think this is a much better way to educate children. In fact, we hope our parents can read to us before we go to bed. We hope to spend more time with them.”

I have recently done a survey about how a teenager can have a successful life.
Most students believe it’s necessary to study hard. After all, study plays a key role in their life. They also agree they should respect their parents, who look after them every day. Besides, they’re ready to serve the society and in their opinion it’s really meaningful. What’s more, they think each teenager is supposed to make a good plan for future.
From my point of view, we need to make some good friends so that we can learn from each other. Also, we must be active and exercise more to keep healthy because it’s important to a successful life.
