Yao Ming was born in Shanghai in 1980. At 229 centimeters, he was the third tallest player in NBA history. Yao made his first appearance in the NBA during the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He surprised many critics with his first games, and was fast becoming an international fan favorite, as he broke Michael Jordan’s record for votes (投票) received. In July 2011 Yao announced his retirement from the NBA due to frequent problems in his left foot.
He continuously works to raise awareness of endangered species and even went as far as to stop using shark fin (鱼鳍) soup at his wedding in 2007. Yao has been saying no to shark fin soup since 2006 when he was appointed Goodwill Ambassador (亲善大使) for wildlife protection. “Shark’s are friends of human beings. They are not our food.” Since his retirement he has become a surprise international force in the field of wildlife protection, and he is using his fame to tell us the difficulties faced by sharks.
Most recently he went to Houston Zoo, as part of his continuing effort to educate young people about the importance of wildlife protection. He is part of a large campaign (运动) by the wildlife protection charity WildAid, and has traveled through Africa to see and document the difficulties facing elephants and rhinos in the wild. With elephant and rhinoceros poaching (偷猎) on the rise, Yao also said, “When the buying stops, the killing can too. Get rid of the demand for rhino horn and ivory right at the source. That’s what I want to do.”
Although Yao is not the first Chinese player in the NBA, it could be argued that he is the most important one, not just for his taking part in charity and wildlife protection work. He built a bridge between two completely different worlds and introduced millions to the Chinese way of life, and the American lifestyle separately.

You can't always forecast a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That's why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain-sensing umbrella.
The designer says he got the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. "Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be suitable to have a canopy(伞篷) built into a street lamp," he said.
The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors(传感器) then make sure that the umbrella offers pedestrians(行人) shelter whenever it starts raining.
According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a low speed, in order not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Installed(安装) at two meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.
While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department. He thinks his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.
28. Why did Belyaev create the Lampbrella
A. To forecast a heavy rain. B. To check the weather forecast.
C. To shelter people from the rain. D. To get people to take an umbrella.
29. What do we know from Belyaev's words in paragraph 2
A. He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.
B. It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.
C. Street lamps are protected by canopies.
D. He came up with his creation from an experience in the rain.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the Lampbrella
A. Its moving speed. B. Its safety.
C. Its installation. D. Its appearance.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The designer is confident that his creation is practical.
B. The designer will open a company to promote his product.
C. The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production.
D. The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.
D
Nobel prize-winners, legendary (传奇的) authors, and famous scientists —— you might think all these people were born to be creative. However, that’s not always the case.
While well-known figures like Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein did their most significant (重要的) work in their youth, famous American poet Robert Frost and English-born natural scientist Charles Darwin were known as “late bloomers” —— people whose talents were not noticeable until later in life.
This idea of “peaking” at different times inspired new research from the United States. “Many people believe that creativity is exclusively (独有地) associated (有联系的) with youth, but it really depends on what kind of creativity you’re talking about,” said Bruce Weinburg, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago and co-author of the study.
According to the study, published earlier this month in the journal De Economist, there are two types of people: conceptual (概念的) and experimental thinkers.
To reach this conclusion, researchers took the 31 previous winners of the Nobel Prize in economics and arranged them according to when they did their most significant work, to identify (识别) their creative peaks.
Some peaked from ages 25-29. Classified as conceptual thinkers, these people think outside of the box, coming up with new ideas before they become used to the conventional way of doing things.
The second creative peak came with economists in their 50s. These are experimental thinkers who have been in their fields for a long time. This allows them to learn from errors and experiment with different processes, before eventually finding new solutions.
“Whether you hit your creative peak early or late in your career depends on whether you have a conceptual or experimental approach,” said Weinburg. He added that their study isn’t limited to economics, saying it can apply to other creative disciplines (知识领域). So if you’re struggling to come up with new ideas, don’t panic. Your creative peak may be yet to arrive.
32. What did the study from the US find
A. Young people are not necessarily more creative than old people.
B. Most people take a conceptual approach when thinking.
C. One’s creative peak is related to their job type.
D. Conceptual and experimental thinkers hit their peaks at different times.
33. What does the underlined word “conventional” mean in context
A. Easy. B. Unusual. C. Traditional. D. Fitting.
34. What do we know about experimental thinkers
A. They work out new methods based on experience.
B. They are good at doing experiments.
C. Their talents usually bloom in their 20s.
D. They are more successful than conceptual thinkers.
35. What would Weinberg probably agree with
A. It’s difficult to find one’s talent in later years.
B. More research needs to be done about creative peaks.
C. Conceptual thinkers could be more successful in the art field.
D. Experimental thinkers from other fields may be most successful in their 50s.

作文:
Dear Peter,
I’ very glad to share with you my winter holiday plans. We are going to go skiing in Lake Songhua Resort. The resort is located in Jilin city which is famous for its rime fog and it is definitely a paradise for skiing.
We are planning a two-day tour and going there by car. On arriving there, going skiing right away will be my first choice. I can’t wait to take a bird’s eye view of the whole city by catching a cable car. There is no denying that the 37 skiing routes there will definitely satisfy my family’s needs of playing. On the second day, taking a bath in a hot spring and finding some delicious traditional food will surely drive our tiredness away.
Since Christmas is coming, what’s your holiday plan I am looking forward to your reply.
yours,
Li Hua

W: I’ll remember that.

W: Nick, we’ve got to decide on the best ways this university can do to reduce its waste. Did you do all the interviews as well
M: Yes, I interviewed all the staff, who made some good observations, and I interviewed some of the students. The students said little that was interesting. It was the cleaners, surprisingly, who revealed most relevant facts.
W: What items were most commonly disposed of
M: In the cafeteria, obviously paper cups were thrown away all over the place. However, across the university in general, it was paper copying that filled up most bins, far more than plastic, or other forms of waste.
W: Did people care about this
M: I have interviewed about 30% of customers in the cafeteria, and the results were mixed. Out of all the people I interviewed, about 55% of them, told me that they had little concern. The rest, 45%, were more troubled.
W: I think we should paint a poster to be put somewhere where lots of people will see it.
M: How about holding an exhibition or giving some lectures I’m sure most people like to work towards helping our environment.
