第一节 (共15题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、 B、C和D中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Today, I am here to tell you a story of death, new life, and revenge (报复). Three years ago, the city council of Redondo Beach, California ordered the death of my 30-year-old pepper tree. Its roots had begun to spread into the pavement in front of my house. They even made me pay for the damage to the sidewalk and for the tree removal.
I loved Clyde. I’m beginning to get older and planting something that I knew would live well beyond my lifetime was something very special. I took very good care of him and I watched him grow. Just as Clyde was becoming a strong healthy individual, expanding his root system, developing a canopy, and making his own way in life, the mayor (市长) took it upon himself to uproot my beautiful child.
Mayor Steve Aspel, you killed my child.
For this, you will pay. Two years and seven months ago, I secretly planted 45 California redwoods and 82 giant sequoias in various parks and yards around your city.
Today, each of their root systems will be at least 30 feet in diameter (直径), and deeply fixed in the soil. You may have noticed the trees growing in front of the city council, or that new one in your backyard. That’s a giant sequoia, and its growth will begin speeding up in the coming months.
You killed Clyde, but I have replaced him with over 100 living giants. In a few years, they’ll begin breaking heights of 100-300 feet and live well beyond 2,500 years. To remove even one of them at this point will cost well over $1,500. And I’m sticking you with the bill, just like you did to me 3 years ago.
Good day to you, sir. May your city be overrun by trees. And may Clyde rest in peace.
21.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To share his experience. B.To advertise his new project.
C.To mourn the loss of his tree. D.To express his anger at the mayor.
22.What does the author mainly describe in Paragraph 2
A.His skills in gardening. B.The suffering of Clyde.
C.His deep affection for Clyde. D.The childhood of Clyde.
23.How did the author respond to Clyde’s death
A.He planted many more trees secretly. B.He asked Steve Aspel to pay damages.
C.He cut down many trees to take revenge. D.He removed a tree from the mayor’s backyard.

It’s common to hear about residents(居民)running into conflicts with urban coyotes(郊狼)in America. Usually it’s because of run-ins with pets, or coyotes getting too close around people in parks or yards. But sometimes a conflict arises for more surprising reasons.
In one San Francisco neighborhood, trouble appeared for the newspaper delivery man when his papers started going missing. He started getting calls from upset clients that their paper wasn’t being delivered, but he knew full well he had delivered one to their doorstep. Shortly after the calls began, he discovered something completely unexpected. He watched as the neighborhood coyote played with a newspaper on a grassy hillside. He videoed her throwing the paper up in the air, sliding down the hillside on it, and running around with pages. It turns out she was repeatedly stealing papers off certain porches shortly after he delivered them, just to play!
Rather than getting mad, the delivery man’s solution was to throw out a paper just for her, launching it onto the grassy hillside she frequented(常出入于)before she had a chance to bite one from a front porch. She had her morning toy, and he stayed out of trouble with his clients .I met the delivery man by chance early one morning while watching the coyote, and I listened to his story. To prove its truth-and maintain the morning ritual(惯例)-the delivery man threw a paper out on the grass. Sure enough, the coyote came running down the hill to play with it.
San Francisco’s coyotes are only just now being studied, and a small population living in the Presidio has been monitored. Many other cities also have new or ongoing studies of urban coyotes. As the clever animals become permanent residents of cities across the continent, learning more about them is a critical step in finding solutions to coexisting with them. For one newspaper man, at least, that coexistence comes at an affordable price: an extra copy of the daily newspaper.

In what’s believed to be a first London’s Imperial College Business School is using holographic technology(全息技术)to present lectures to students. From California a product manager was beamed onto a stage like magic. The head of Imperial’s EdTech Lab says, this presents a window to the world. Through holograms(全息图)we can bring in lectures from across the globe, and they can appear in front of our students in a realistic manner. That’s the key.
The developer of the technique explains how it works. “We’re presenting a 2D image as a 3D image, and the iris(虹膜)is flat so we see everything in 2D.Our brain changes it to 3D.We’re doing exactly the same trick. We’re presenting a 2D image but with depth of field and a really good vision. My brain just changes it to a 3D image.” Attendees say there are many ways this tool can help educators and students.
The second thing we could do with that is having CEOs coming to the classroom, and engaging with students. And the third way probably is maybe to have Albert Einstein coming to the classroom. There might be a long wait for that. Meanwhile, master student Josephine Collins says she prefers the interaction a hologram lecture offers compared to those presented online.
I wouldn’t mind it. I think its very interesting if we can have access to different lectures and different things like guest speakers. That’s something I would definitely enjoy. Developers say the cost of holographic technology has dropped considerably since the days it was used mostly in big-budget music shows making it possible for educational institutions to afford it.
28.According to this passage, holographic technology mainly benefits________.
A.health care B.commerce C.education D.agriculture
29.How does holographic technology work
A.Our sight upgrades a 2D image into a 3D image.
B.Our brain transforms a 2D image into a 3D image.
C.The developer presents the lectures online.
D.The iris is so flat that we see images in 2D.
30.Compared to the lectures presented online, a hologram lecture ________.
A.brings Albert Einstein back to life
B.allows the lecturer to interact with students
C.is more money-saving for educational institutions
D.is more available whenever and wherever you are
31.What is the author’s attitude towards holographic technology
A.Ignoring. B.Compromising. C.Approving. D.Disagreeing.
D
In a digital age, we almost never write things by hand. However, multiple studies have shown that this act has many benefits.
New brain research, led by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, confirms the same choosing handwriting over using a keyboard results in better learning and memory.
“When you write your shopping list or lecture notes by hand, you simply remember the content better afterwards,” said Audrey Van der Meer, author of the study.
The study was conducted using equipment to track and record brain wave activity. The participants included 12 young adults and 12 children. This is the first time that children have participated in such a study. Each subject was asked to write by hand and type on a keyboard while wearing a hood(风帽) with over 250 electrodes(电极). The sensors(传感器)in the electrodes are very sensitive and pick up the electrical activity that takes place in the brain. Each examination took 45 minutes per person.
The results showed that the brain in both young adults and children is much more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses are activated (激活) by pressing a pen on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These sense experiences build contact between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the outcomes stress the importance of children being challenged to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower process, but it’s important for children to go through the tiring phase of learning to write by hand”, she said.
The hand movements used to form the shapes of letters are beneficial in several ways. “If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor(精细动作)skills and senses. It’s important to put the brain in a learning state as often as possible,” Van der Meer added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write an essay, but you should take notes by hand during a lecture.
32.What’s the main purpose of the text
A.To encourage the use of handwriting
B.To advise children to start to write early
C.To report on new research on handwriting
D.To explain how handwriting affects adults and children differently
33.What do we know about the study
A.The study involved 45 participants altogether.
B.The participants were divided into two groups to conduct.
C.All the participants were gathered together for examinations.
D.The sensors in the electrodes were used to track brain wave activity.
34.Why does the brain become more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard according to Van der Meer
A.More senses are made active when writing by hand.
B.Writing by hand is easier on the brain.
C.Noise made by typing doesn’t distract the brain when writing by hand.
D.The brain is more used to the skills required to write by.
35.How does Van der Meer think handwriting benefits people
A.It allows children to become more patient. B.It increases people’s interest in learning.
C.It helps people develop fine motor skills. D.It allows people to write better essays.
