Check your calendar. You will find the third Monday in February is Presidents' Day, a holiday you may know to recognize the achievements of all past U.S. presidents. Do you know the history behind this holiday
After George Washington died in 1799, his supporters began recognizing his birthday, February 22, as a day of remembrance for America's first president.(At least, those who used the Gregorian calendar did. The Julian calendar said he was born on February 11.) Washington's birthday became a federal (联邦的) holiday for the District of Columbia in 1879 and for the rest of the country in 1885.
Then in 1968, Congress (国会) introduced the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill (法案), which hoped to change certain federal holidays from special dates to Mondays, creating more three day weekends. The idea was that more long weekends would make people work hard during shorter workdays.
The bill also wanted to combine (结合) Washington's and Abraham Lincoln's birthdays into one holiday (some states, like Illinois, already celebrated Lincoln's birthday, February 12). Illinois Senator Robert McClory suggested this holiday be called “Presidents' Day”. In 1971, the bill passed, and President Richard Nixon made an order that the third Monday in February should be now a holiday. Here's the thing though: According to the United States laws, that holiday is still called Washington's Birthday. The name never officially changed to Presidents' Day. But since the laws allowed local governments and private businesses to name federal holidays whatever they want, most states call it Presidents' Day. Many stores also make use of this second name to boost February sales.
Two other presidents celebrated birthdays in February, William Henry Harrison (February 9) and Ronald Reagan (February 6).

Thousands of German students are accusing (指责) school officials of creating an English exam that was “unfairly” difficult. The exam is important because it is part of Germany's Abitur system. The Abitur test is given to students who are completing high school and preparing to enter college.
More than 35,000 people have signed a petition (请愿书) to voice their concerns about the test. The students say the English part of the year's Abitur is clearly more difficult than tests given in recent years. They are calling on school officials to consider their opinions while they give test results.
The exam is designed to test students' understanding and skill level in English. Part of the test requires students to read examples of English writing and then answer questions to see how much they understand. The petition says some of the English examples are very difficult to understand, even for students who usually do well in English classes. It says some examples were written a long time ago and had old words.
One of the most difficult examples is a description of New York City's Statue of Liberty. Students say it has too many “unknown words” and “symbolic meanings”, making it difficult to understand. Even some native English speakers pointed out on social media that they would have difficulties with the writing in the example too. A British Twitter user living in Frankfurt, Germany said, “I'm a native English speaker and ‘roweling’ is a new word to me, too.”
However, school officials said they had carried out a full review of the exam and decided it was “proper” for students.
5.Why do the German students accuse school officials
A.Their English exam was too difficult.
B.There were mistakes in an English exam.
C.Germany's Abitur system was unfair.
D.Unfair rules were made for them.

A.Give them another exam.
B.Treat their petition seriously.
C.Explain to them about the exam.
D.Change Germany's Abitur system.
7.What is the problem with the description of New York City's Statue of Liberty in the exam
A.It is too long.
B.It is boring to read.
C.It has many questions.
D.It has many rarely used words.
8.What would be the best title for the text
A.German students fight against an unfair English exam
B.German students did poorly in an English exam
C.German educational system needs a change
D.English is difficult for German students

The origins of the Christmas traditions are the most fascinating of any holiday. All our favorite activities can be traced (追溯) back to specific points in history, and knowing how these things came about just makes celebrating Christmas much more wonderful.
The original Nicholas was born in 280 A.D. in the small country of Lycia, which is now part of modern Turkey. Nicholas became first a priest (牧师) and then a bishop (主教) in the early Christian church. The first paintings of him show Nicholas wearing the clothes of a Christian bishop — red decorated with white. When we see Santa's suit today, we're still seeing the two kinds of colors.
Nicholas became famous for gift giving. In the early fourth century, a legend began to spread about Nicholas coming at night to the home of three poor girls who did not have money and therefore could not get married. While the girls slept, Nicholas left gold coins in their stockings, which were drying by the fire. That's how the tradition of Santa filling stockings got its start.
In 1841, Santa first appeared at a department store in Philadelphia. This Santa tried to climb down a chimney to impress the children who were watching, but he got stuck halfway down. In 1890, department store Santas began appearing all over America, especially on the East Coast around Boston. Parents in other countries joined together and hired passenger trains to take their families to see these Santas.
At the same time, Ralph E. Morris of the New England Telephone Company suggested that strings of lights be hung on Christmas trees. After all, lights would be much safer than candles. Our modern day image of Santa as a fat man is based on ads of the Coca Cola company in the 1930s. Artist Hans Sundblom used a retired salesman named Les Prentice as his model.
12.What do we know about Nicholas
A.He set up the first Christian church.
B.He was called Santa Claus when he was born.
C.His clothes are similar to Santa's suit in color.
D.His image is the same as the modern day Santa.
13.Three poor girls are mentioned to ________.
A.prove that Nicholas used to be a rich man
B.tell of the origin of Santa filling stockings
C.show Christmas was set up mainly for the poor
D.describe a famous story in the early fourth century

A.Santa didn't become popular until the year 1890.
B.Candles have never been used on Christmas trees.
C.The Coca Cola company designed the image of Santa.
D.Santa began giving gifts by climbing down chimneys in 1841.
15.What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A.Christmas is the most important holiday.
B.The traditions of Christmas are based on facts.
C.There was not any record of Christmas in the past.
D.More and more people begin to celebrate Christmas.

第二节 故事续写(25分)

Caleb's fingers slowly moved over the piano keys (钢琴键) as he searched for the next note. He'd only been taking lessons for a few weeks, and playing the piano was harder than it looked. This one, he thought as he pressed (按) a white key. Wrong! He tried again. Oh, this one, he thought, pressing another key. Right!
“That song is challenging,” said Mrs. Lee, his piano teacher, when he finished playing. “But it sounds much_better than it did last week! I can tell you've been practicing really hard. I think you can take a trip to the treasure_chest (百宝箱).”
The treasure chest! Caleb's eyes turned to the big golden box in the corner of the room. It was filled with candy and other fun prizes. This would be Caleb's first trip to the treasure chest.
As Mrs. Lee started to teach her next student, Caleb searched through the treasure chest. Should he take the dog stickers, or the orange gum Then he saw it — a green folder (文件夹). It was his favorite color, and he could use it to carry his drawings. He reached for it. But then he saw the fruit snacks. They were strawberry, his favorite flavor. That would be a great prize too.
Folder_or_fruit_snacks He could not decide which choice was better. Caleb knew his_mom would be there soon to pick him up, but he still couldn't decide what to pick. The folder would be perfect for his drawings, but he could almost taste the fruit snacks.
His hand moved between the two prizes as he tried to make up his mind. Then Caleb had another thought. Maybe he could take both.Mrs. Lee had so many prizes in the treasure chest that she would never notice. It wouldn't even be stealing only if he wouldn't take anything next time. That would be OK, wouldn't it
Caleb looked at Mrs. Lee. She was busy helping her student. Quietly Caleb put the fruit snacks and the folder into his bag and went out of the room.

Dear Li Lan,
Nowadays, Western festivals become more and more popular in China, especially among us college students.
Some regard it a precious opportunity for the Chinese to learn more about Western cultures. On the other hand, more and more Chinese people view it oppositely. Since more and more young people have lost their interest in our traditional festivals, such as Mid Autumn Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and even Spring Festival. They seem to be more willing to celebrate Christmas.
In my opinion, we should preserve the traditional Chinese culture as well as welcome Western ones. We students undertake the responsibility to carry on our traditions, therefore, we have to respect them and cherish them.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
But Caleb felt he did something wrong after a while. When he left Mrs. Lee's piano room, he didn't feel good. By the time he reached her front door, he felt worse. He knew he did not feel good because of the bad choice he had made. He looked at the prizes. His problem wasn't folder_or_fruit_snacks anymore. It was choosing the right or choosing the wrong Caleb knew what he had to do.
Paragraph 2:
Then he saw a car coming to him. That must be his mom's car. He opened the front door and waved to his_mom. “Just a minute!”he called. He took out the green folder from his bag and went back to Mrs. Lee's piano room. Apologizing for his stealing was hard, but he felt much better. Honesty turned out to be the best prize of all. He felt happy because he finally made a good choice by being honest.
