When leaving school, I was pleased that my exam results meant that I could study engineering at university. But I also wanted to travel before starting my course. A friend of mine told me about the Schools Exploring Society, an organization which helps students take a gap year (a year between leaving school and going to college). It has three foreign journeys a year, taking 16 20 year olds on science and nature trips. I love being outdoors, and a mountaineering trip to Alaska was on offer. So I signed up (报名) immediately.
There was one problem, though. I had to raise a large amount of money for the trip. It was a big task, but I managed to make it. I washed cars, worked in a cafe and also sold off some of my old books, clothes and CDs. Then, just before starting out, I started worrying. Can I do this?Am I fit enough? What if I see a bear
Seventy of us traveled to Alaska. The first two days after arrival were spent in a school hall preparing our equipment and five tons of food. Then we left for the beautiful Talkeetna Mountain. On the trip we dug paths and recognized plant species. Then we climbed a mountain that was over 6,000 feet high. It was tiring but exciting.
Looking back, a gap year was so right for me. I learned a lot about accepting other people for what they are.We had to help each other and it made me less selfish. My gap year has also made me more able to concentrate. Now, whenever I'm worried about anything, I think I did Alaska — I can do this!

A.To explain how to prepare for trips.
B.To advise on how to spend a gap year.
C.To describe his experience in his gap year.

This journey began this morning almost an hour later than I had planned, although I had completed my packing before eight o'clock. I was quite clear about the fact that once I left, my house would stand empty for probably the first time since the day it was built. It was a strange feeling and perhaps explains why I was leaving so late, walking around the house many times over, checking one last time to see that all was in order.
It is hard to explain my feelings once I did finally set off. As I drove further and further from the house, I found the surroundings (周围的事物) grow unrecognizable. I began to have a feeling of unease mixed with excitement. I took a turning and found myself on a road circling the edge of a hill. I could sense the steep (陡峭的) drop to my left. I felt a sense of alarm that I was perhaps not on the correct road at all, but speeding off in the wrong direction into a wilderness. It was only the feeling of a moment, but it caused me to slow down. And even when I was sure I was on the right road, I felt forced to stop the car a moment to think carefully.
I decided to step out and stretch (伸展) my legs a little. On the one side of the road, thickets and small trees rose sharply, while on the other I could now see the distant countryside and a town nearby.
I walked a little way along the roadside, when I heard a voice behind me. Until this point I had believed myself quite alone and I turned in some surprise. Sitting on the large stone was a thin, white haired man, He called to me again and signaled me to join him. For a moment. I took him for a homeless man, but then I saw he was just some local man enjoying the fresh air and summer sunshine, and saw no reason not to do so.

A.He repeatedly checked the house.
B.He was feeling sad about leaving the house.
C.Packing his belongings took longer than expected.
D.There was no one to help him get everything ready.
6.What caused the author to start driving more slowly
A.The road had become steep.
B.He realized he was driving too fast.
C.The beautiful scenery attracted him.
D.He suddenly feared that he might get lost.
7.When the author walked out of his car, he ________.
A.didn't expect to see anyone
B.didn't want to speak to anybody
C.didn't know there was a town nearby
D.couldn't see anything because of the tree
8.What was the author's attitude to his trip
A.He just wanted to finish it.
B.He felt unable to continue it.
C.He regretted having started it.
D.He had mixed feelings about it.

Bai Chay Beach is a large and beautiful beach. It lies close to the coast of Halong Bay.The 100 meter wide sandy beach is over 500 meters long. In summer, the beach is a popular tourist attraction not only for local people, but also for tourists.
There are many legends about Bai Chay. According to local people, legend has it that when a group of ships carrying food for the Yuan Mongolian invaders (入侵者) came there, the Vietnamese soldiers and the local people led by Tran Khanh Du set fire to the ships. Another legend has it that the western side of the beach used to be a wharf (码头) for seagoing boats. A special plant was harmful to the boats. The local people had to use leaves to burn this plant. From Hon Gai and other neighboring places, people always saw fires from there, so they called it Bai Chay.
Having received much investment (投资), the Bai Chay tourist site has rapidly transformed into one of the most fascinating beaches in Halong City. It has restaurants, traditional music theaters, parks, water skiing, and sea motorcycling. Today, Bai Chay is a well known attraction with good services, which can meet the increasing needs of visitors. People who like travelling have their reasons. They believe that travelling can help them expand their field of view, especially in the geographical and historical sense. They also think that touring will give them more chances to enjoy different kinds of food and experience new things that would never be brought by other activities. But those who dislike travelling also have some reasons.
Travelling, in my opinion, does more good than harm. Most importantly, it broadens (使扩大) our mind. We can get in touch with other civilizations (文明), cultures, customs and ideas.
Through history, most people travelled because of necessity (必要性) — not for pleasure. People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in. They sometimes ran away from enemies. This is not to say that no one ever travelled just for the fun of it.In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the way to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games, and festivals. Of course, some people decided to travel just out of curiosity (好奇心).They wanted to find out what it looked like beyond the horizon (地平线).Also business travel has been going on for centuries. Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures.
So, travelling does enrich our mind and draw new ideas to us.There is no doubt that we can get much from it.
12.According to the passage, in the past most people travelled ________.
A.for fun B.for knowledge
C.to get experience D.to make a living
13.In the writer's opinion, travelling can be ________.
A.expensive B.funny
C.helpful D.tiring
14.What's the main idea of this passage
A.Different kinds of travelling.
B.Travelling enriches our mind.
C.Ways to enjoy yourself while travelling.
D.The advantages and disadvantages of travelling.
15.The underlined word “expand” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by “________”.
A.widen B.protect
C.lose D.decide

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment.
She ran a small shop at a flea market (跳蚤市场) and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me, “Your mom only has one eye?” and laughed at me.
I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom, “Why don't you have the other eye You're only gonna (将要) make me a joke!” My mom trembled with shock, and said in an apologetic tone, “I'm so sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. But I was so proud of my son to see a whole new world for me with that_eye. I will leave right now. Sorry!” My mom turned around and staggered away.
For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something biting at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one eyed mom and our desperate poverty. Maybe because my mom hadn't punished me, I didn't think I had hurt her feelings very badly.
I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University. I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. I never went back to visit my mom.
Then I got married there. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it's a place that doesn't remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door.

【应用文】
Last week, I went to Beijing and visited the Great Wall. It's so wonderful that people often say no visit to Beijing is complete without a visit to the Great Wall.
The Great Wall, which is more than 6,000 kilometers long, is the longest wall in the world. It has a history of more than 2,000 years. It is made of stone and bricks and almost all the construction was done by hand without any machine. As the wall was built to defend the country against foreign invaders, there were watchtowers every few hundred meters along the wall. Now,the Great Wall is such a famous place of interest in China that it attracts many visitors every year.
If you have a chance to visit it, you will be delighted with the great tourist attraction.
【读后续写】
Paragraph 1:
It was my mom! And still with her one eye! Reminded instantly of my dark past and embarrassment,_I felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. Overwhelmed with rage, I growled at her, “Who are you How dare you come to my house!” My mom narrowed her eye and opened her mouth but nothing came out there. Dead silence! Tears streaming down the gloomy winkled face, she thrust a letter into my hand, turned around and staggered away, head deep down. Heart stung by her withered back, I just cast a glance at the letter. My mom gave that_eye to me! My world shattered.
Paragraph 2:
Holding the letter, I cried for the person who only lived for me. How eagerly she wanted her own son to see the world clearly! But how deeply I had hurt her! Heart knotted with deep regret, I called out loudly, “Mom!” I ran after my mom, grabbed her and knelt down. “Mom, would you forgive me and accept me again?” Tears dried and her expression one of forgiving, a smile stole into her cheeks. It's never too old fashioned to say mom's love is the greatest in the world.
