Herman Melvile, the writer of the famous whale story Moby Dick, once wrote that humpback whales were “the most light hearted of all the whales.” Known to be intelligent animals and can be seen working together to hunt schools of small fish, humpbacks are a favorite of whale watchers everywhere. And, if you listen closely, you might even hear one singing.
Marine (海洋) biologist Jim Darling has studied the songs of humpback whales for more than 25 years. While recording whale songs on a boat near Hawaii, he invited author Douglas Chadwick to experience diving with a humpback. In the water, Chadwick heard the whale's songs in a way he never heard them before. “Suddenly, I no longer heard the whale's voice in my ears,” he said. “I felt it inside my head and bones.” When swimming with the whale, Chadwick could see that the whale was aware of him, but not alarmed by his presence. Up in the boat, Darling recorded the whale's song, which can be long and complex, sometimes lasting for 30 minutes or more. Actually, they are perhaps the longest songs sung by any animal.
Darling says that only male humpbacks sing, but for unknown reasons, it was previously thought that they sang to attract females, but scientists showed this was incorrect when they played recordings of whale songs in the ocean and the female whales did not respond. Another idea is that male humpbacks compete with each other using songs, just as other male animals on land do using their horns or sharp teeth.
Researchers have also found that humpback whale songs are different in different parts of the world, perhaps like whale national songs. They may also be like hit tunes on the radio, changing over time — from one year to the next, or even over a single breeding season when they produce young.
Another member of the research team, photographer Flip Nicklin, recalls a special moment he had while interacting with a humpback. While he was snorkeling(潜水) some distance from the huge animal, it approached him until it was just a few metres away. It then gently carried Nicklin towards its eye with a flipper (鳍肢), as if examine him. Obviously, the urge to understand a different species goes both ways.

Most of us have been in this situation: You're on your way to your friend's house, then you suddenly ask yourself, “Did I remember to turn the lights off?” For those with smart homes, however, this wouldn't be a problem.
Over the last few years, smart home technology has become more popular. Thanks to user friendly products like intelligent lighting and heating controllers, people can control nearly every electrical item in their homes from anywhere in the world.
While smart homes aren't new, companies like Philips and Xiaomi have finally brought automation to everyday people with affordable products like artificial intelligence (AI) speakers and sensors. “The obvious message is that you can stop wasting energy,” Tom Kerber, director of research for U.S. based digital company Parks Associates, told The Guardian.
And the technology also has more meaningful uses. In Norway, for example, one company is using smart technology to make life easier for its elderly customers. Abilia's system allows carers to check up on patients through a tablet on a wall inside their home. The device sends patients reminders about tasks, such as when they need to take medications (药). It can even tell carers if there's any unusual activity in the home that could be life threatening.
“This kind of system allows people to take care of themselves, which is the most important thing,” Abilia's vice president, Oystein Johnsen, told the BBC. “It also saves the government money. In Norway, it costs 1 million kroner (about 0.8 million yuan) per year to have someone in a care home. This system costs 15,000 kroner a year.”
So, for those who have already “gone smart”, will it ever be possible to go back to do things in the old fashioned way “I think it would be difficult. When we go to a friend's house or on vacation we find ourselves expecting the house to do things for us that we should do,” Poulson, a senior program manager from Seattle, U.S., explained.
5.What are the first and second paragraphs used for
A.Introducing the topic.
B.Describing the situation.
C.Advertising smart homes.
D.Putting forward the author's opinion.
6.What do Philips and Xiaomi have in common
A.They are all designing smart homes.
B.They are all U.S. based digital companies.
C.They've all made inexpensive AI products for ordinary people.
D.They've all received affordable products automatically.
7.What does Abilia's system allow users to do in Norway
A.To switch off lights through a tablet.
B.To buy user friendly products.
C.To control heating and cooling systems.
D.To take care of themselves.
8.What's Poulson's attitude to smart home technology
A.Cautious. B.Favorable.
C.Indifferent. D.Disapproving.

German artist HA Schult is an unusual artist who uses trash (废物) to make sculptures.“We are living in the time of garbage,” says Schult.“I created a thousand sculptures of garbage. They are a mirror of ourselves.” Here, Schult was talking about his 1,000 trash sculptures in the form of humans. He first exhibited them in 1996 in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
“They are social sculptures,” he explains.“They are not only sculptures for the eyes. They are sculptures to spread the idea that we live in a time of garbage.” So far, Schult's social sculptures have been on show in Paris, in Moscow's Red Square, on the Great Wall of China, and in the desert next to the Pyramids of Giza near Cairo.
HA Schult's work is unforgettable.Although his work has had a big influence on the art world, Schult remains modest about his creations: “Artists have to learn every time.We are not important. All that counts is the time in which we are living.”
Trash art has been around for years. But it seems that only the popular artists are regarded as true artists when working with trash. Why can't common people be considered artists when they use the same things and change them into some form of personal art Maybe it's because we all have our own preset ideas of what art is and isn't, or whom artists are or should be.
You can be an artist like Schult if you try.Look at used metal cans. What might be done with them Imagine them in any number of new uses, or imagine them simply as an art form. What about boxes or clothing Boxes can usually serve as new storage containers and houses for pets. And clothing?Imagine taking old clothes and turning them into hats or hanging organizers.
9.HA Schult's artistic works also get the message across that an artist must ________.
A.be socially responsible
B.be as modest as possible
C.make garbage recyclable
D.take diverse artistic forms
10.According to the last 2 paragraphs, the author probably agrees that ________.
A.it takes talent to be a trash artist
B.preset ideas are important to artists
C.trash art can't be seen as a real art form
D.average people can also make trash artists
11.What do we know about Schult's sculptures
A.They served as garbage containers.
B.They reflected environmental issues.
C.They were first shown in Paris, France.
D.They were to raise economic awareness.

As far back as the age of dinosaurs millions of years ago, turtles wandered around the Earth. Even nowadays it is generally assumed that turtles are the world's steadiest creature.
However, a new research shows 61 percent of the 356 species of turtles are already threatened or no longer exist. The destruction of their homes, disease, climate change and other reasons have caused their population to drop sharply. In a new study published in the journal BioScience, a team of scientists from various institutions claim that turtles are one of the most threatened among the major vertebrate (脊椎动物) groups.
This could, the authors say, have serious consequences for the ecology. Turtles contribute to the health of many environments, including desert, wetland, freshwater and marine ecosystems, and the decline may lead to bad effects on other species, including humans, they explain. Whit Gibbons, senior author and professor at the University of Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, says in a statement that the intention of the study is to inform people about the vital ecological roles of turtles.
One of the important qualities of turtles is how diverse they are when it comes to food. This allows them to have a major impact on food webs of their homes all over the world. In some areas, the density (密度) of the turtle population makes them an important part of the ecosystem. With their gathering, other species that feed on them and their eggs are sure to have a large pool of food.
For plants, turtles are also extremely important as they distribute the seeds of many plant species. When they eat, some seeds are not destroyed by the digestive process and instead make their way out of the animals' body. Some turtles are the main dispersal (传播) agents of certain plants and their seeds.
These are only a few yet very vital roles that turtles play in the ecological landscape. Unfortunately, many species are in serious decline and in danger of disappearing completely.
12.How might the disappearance of turtles influence certain plants
A.Speed up these plants' disappearing.
B.Put an end to these plants' seed spreading.
C.Allow more seeds to grow into plants.
D.Give these plants no chance of survival.

C.Decline of Turtles Threatens the World
D.Turtles' Dying Out Worldwide Matters a Lot
15.What does the new study aim to do
A.To save the grand vertebrate groups on earth.
B.To warn people of turtles' terrible situation.
C.To make the importance of turtles' roles known.

第二节 故事续写(25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Once when I was young and had a loose tooth, I asked my father, a_dentist,_to look at it.
“It needs to be pulled,” he told me. I frowned, afraid of the pain of that experience. My dad sent me for some tissues and I imagined them soaking up liters of blood from my mouth. I closed my eyes and strengthened myself. I was still waiting for him to pull when I heard my father say, “I'm done.”
I opened my eyes and saw my tooth in his tissue covered_hand. I hadn't felt anything, and there was just a bit of blood on the tissues. I thought my father was a magician.
The next day at school I bragged to a friend about my_father's_wonderful_skill. When I explained that the process didn't hurt, my friend called me a liar. He said that when his tooth was pulled, it had hurt a lot. I talked to my father about this and there was not a single mystery left after my father's explanation: my tooth had been ready to be removed, while my friend's had not.
“I'm going to be a dentist,” I declared. I wanted to follow in the professional footsteps of my father, my uncle and grandmother. My father supported my ambition,_honoring my interest in his profession even when I was young. He always encouraged me, saying,“To_achieve_your_goal,_you should always be devoting hard_work_and_effort to it.”
I didn't need to visit my father's office as a child because I had few cavities. As I entered the elementary school and began eating more candy, however, I visited more often. I didn't mind, though. I was the only kid I knew who was excited about going to the dentist. After my father worked on my teeth, he let me hang around. And I was amazed as he operated complicated machines, leaning over patients'_mouths with a tiny mirror strapped to his head.

Dear friends,
As we all know, nature provides us with abundant resources, which are essential to our everyday living. If the environment is worsening, our life will also be threatened, so it's urgent that we make joint efforts to protect the environment.
It's widely acknowledged that human activities have caused global warming to a large extent. Therefore, it's time that we took effective measures to save energy. Biking or taking a bus to and from school is a better choice than using private cars. It's wise to turn off electrical appliances when we don't use them. Besides, we can appeal to people around us to do something for our environment.
Let's work together and take action now! Everyone's effort counts.
【读后续写】
Paragraph 1:
Once, when my dad was pulling my mother's teeth, he even let me clear her mouth. Afraid to meet the challenge at first, I managed to start with my father's encouragement. After all, it was the first time I had seen the inside of a human mouth. Staring and fascinated at the structure of my mom's teeth,_I dreamt that one day I would take up my intentional career as a_dentist. Having cleared her mouth with alcohol and tissues,_I got a clear image of the teeth from my mother and praise for good work from my father.
Paragraph 2:
Years later, the dream of a child has not declined but actually grown firmer. As time passed, I realized that hard_work_and_effort were necessary to be a dentist, which made my ambition even stronger. As the first step in preparation for my promising career as a dentist, the first business of all is that I should struggle to be qualified to study in a medical school. To achieve my goal, I should devote my time and energy without any hesitation to learning and practice following my father.
