While training for a half-marathon last fall,Janet Sherman, 57, started noticing pain in her left foot. A diagnosis of plantar fasciitis(足底筋膜炎)led to shoe inserts and cross-training. Before long, the Wyoming-based teacher was “just good enough” to go back to training, and so she did, although she chose to drop down to a shorter 10K race distance.
On race day,Sherman’s foot began bothering her early, and by a water stop two-thirds of the way through the course, she knew she should drop out. “It was so painful, but I was stubborn and finished out the race.” she said. “Afterward,I could barely walk.”
To the inactive,Sherman’s attitude might be hard to understand. But for amateur athletes and weekend warriors, pushing through pain is a common refrain.“As a society, we are more active in sports than ever before” said Adrienne Langelier, a Texas-based sports psychology consultant.“But at the same time, as a culture we have developed a “no-days off mentality”.
That needs to change, said Mark Cucuzzella, a physician and professor at the West Virginia University School Medicine. “ No pain,no gain’—no,thank you”,he said jokingly. “For too long we have beautified that way of thinking. It’s not sustainable.”
Pressing too hard can lead to injury, illness and exhaustion. With running, for instance, pushing through pain can lead to a secondary injury, said Adam Tenforde of the Spaulding National Running Center at Harvard Medical School. “A stress fracture(骨折), if you continue to run on it, may progress to a full fracture and require a much longer recovery period, for example.” He said. “I advocate for addressing pain early, rather than ignoring it”.
24. From the text, what do we know about Sherman
A. She gave up training because of pain in her left foot.
B. She insisted on finishing a half-marathon race.
C. She recovered from injury fully to get back to training.
D. She finished out a shorter 10k despite of severe pain.
25. What does underlined word “That” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. It is very common to push through pain while doing sports.
B. We should drop out of training because of pain.
C. More and more people are addicted to sports nowadays.
D. People are bearing greater burden than reasonably supposed.
26. What’s Mark Cucuzzella’s attitude towards “No pain, no gain”
A. Favorable. B. Neutral.
C. Disapproving. D. Uncaring.
27. What did Adam Tenforde advise us to do
A. Develop a “no days off” mentality.
B. Deal with pain as soon as possible instead of ignoring it.
C. Carry on training regardless of pain.
D. No pain, no gain.
C
With the outbreak of the COVID-19, multiple kinds of protective medical equipment, such as disposable(一次性的)masks, have been consumed. Market research indicates a sharp increase rate of 53% in the mask market alone. People often use these types of protective equipment and then throw them without thinking of the consequences, both on the ecosystem and human beings.
Disposable surgical masks are severely affecting the ecosystem. When improperly-handled masks enter the water system, they break up into smaller plete masks can trap marine animals, resulting in their impaired mobility and even death. Meanwhile, the poisonous plastic particles will cause marine animals to be poisoned to death or weakness when they consume plastic. Furthermore, these harmful pollutants can severely affect reproduction, growth, and the development of the young. Just like their effects on marine animals, these pollutants can also contribute to severe harm in human bodies, especially in the neuron system. Exposure to micro plastics may cause particle poisoning, cellular damage and neuro-degenerative (神经退化的) diseases like Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔茨海默症).
Despite the potential harm to the ocean system and human neuron system, improperly-handled disposable masks will likely become a dangerous public health threat under the environment of a global pandemic. Instead of helping us fight against the COVID-19, to some extent, micro plastic pollution also causes the potential risk of speeding up the spread of the virus. Micro plastic particles in the ocean can be mixed up with water vapour to form aerosols in the atmosphere because they are small enough to enter the water cycle, where they are transferred from the marine system to the atmosphere in vast amounts and become a source for the disease COVID-19. thus causing the virus to speed up the spread of the global pandemic.
Humans will eventually suffer from the wrongdoing in the ocean systems because humans are nothing but temporary residents of the planet. Just like what the famous English anthropologist, Jane Goodall, has said, “Every individual matters. Every individual makes a difference.”
28. The underlined word “impaired” in paragraph 2 probably means“_________”.
A. strengthened B. damaged
C. completed D. influenced
29. The improperly-handled masks lead to following outcomes EXCEPT_________.
A. the impact on marine lives’ reproduction, growth and weakness
B. the destruction to human’s neuron system, cellular system
C. the huge economic loss for people living near the sea
D. the great burden of micro plastic particles on ecosystem
30. The main idea of paragraph 3 is_________.
A. to describe the negative effects of disposed masks on nature and human beings.
B. to advise readers to deal with the improperly-handled masks.
C. how the improperly-handled masks help spread the virus.
D. how to deal with the virus.
31. What is the purpose of this article
A. To explain a serious phenomenon caused by the virus.
B. To advocate a proper solution to solving the disposable masks.
C. To compare the sufferings between marine animals and human beings.
D. To analyze the harmful results of the improperly-handled masks.
D
Like the move from horse-drawn carriages to vehicles powered by internal-combustion(内燃)engines, the change from cars powered by fossil fuels to electric vehicles (EVs) will have a profound effect on personal transport. The Epidemic worldwide caused a 20% drop in global light vehicle sales in 2020, to about 70m, but they pick up in 2021. And the proportion of vehicles powered by batteries will grow quickly.
The increasing share price of Tesla, provides a big motivation for newcomers to catch up. Tesla may lead in battery technology and software, but to make those advantages stick, it must prove that “production hell” is behind it. Scaling up manufacturing has caused Tesla its biggest headaches.
Big name carmakers face an equally discouraging challenge:Learning how to write software. Electric cars require integrated software(集成软件),not just to ensure that batteries and motors work together to provide the best performance, but to connect the car to the outside world.
And what of the Tesla followers, from China’s li, Nio and Xpeng to American firms such as Fisker, Lucid and Nikola Cash from excitable investors has poured in and it is the same with big name carmakers—as are tech giants, keen to get involved as transport goes digital. Can the followers persuade investors that they have patent technology that will give them a long-term advantage
Eye-catching Advertisements of vehicles are one thing, but as the industry’s trouble shows, working out how to make cars at scale, when softwares are as important as brakes and bodywork,is quite another. The coming year will make clearer which of Tesla’s competitors, new and old, can stay in race.
32. What is the trend of electric cars industry
A. Uncertain. B. Challenging.
C. Promising. D. Disappointing.
33. What is the biggest challenge Tesla faces now
A. Learning how to write the software.
B. Expanding its production capacity.
C. Connecting the car to the outside world.
D. Competing with many newcomers.
34. Which statement about Tesla’s competitors is TRUE
A. Their share prices are catching up with those of Tesla.
B. They are mostly established companies.
C. Their biggest problem is technical one like improving brakes and bodywork.
D. They are attracting investment.
35. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Battle Within the Electric-Vehicle Industry
B. Expanding Production Capacity—the Headache of Electric Cars Industry
C. New Companies Are Catching up in Electric-Vehicle Industry
D. Electric Cars—Your Future Choice

Winston Churchill was known for his improv(即兴的)comebacks. “Churchill, you are drunk.” “My dear, you are ugly. But tomorrow I shall be clear minded and you will still be ugly.” We’ve all been there, envying those who respond faster. How anyone might seize the opportunity for clever response in everyday life Here are some insights.
Don’t think too much
In improv, the funniest responses occur at the instant of the moment. 36 It’s about letting go of the need to judge ourselves. Not every response will be a gem(珍品),but some will hit their mark.
Listen before you talk
Still, listen with all your ears and spend some time considering the argument that your opponent is laying out. 37
It's important to listen as much, if not more than, you talk; think about what you want to say before it comes out of your mouth.
38
You need to accumulate your knowledge little by little. Some of history’s most skilled comeback artists stored witticisms(俏皮话)for later use and were able to pull them out of their memory at the critical time. 39
Avoid delaying too long
When you communicate through social media, you get a few extra minutes to think through your responses. That could improve the quality of your comebacks, but don’t hesitate for too long. 40 Speed is vital to improv comebacks.
A. Everyone is able to perform a perfect comeback.
B. Put a few in the bank.
C. Your response may be more accurate and therefore more successful.
D. Don’t worry about crafting the perfect reply.
E. This is the key to Churchill's impressive improv comebacks.
F. Give it a second thought.
G. Replies lose their power after a day or so.

M:Hey,sis,we’re not children any more. You don’t need to look after me like you did in my childhood. Even wives don’t worry so much over their husbands.
W:Well,if we want to reach the age of our grandparents’, we need to stay healthy. When I queue at the checkout behind some people, I am amazed at the unhealthy things they have in their baskets. No wonder they are overweight, unfit and always feeling ill.
M:I think you have to keep a balance. I try to buy mostly healthy things, but I don’t get stressed if I sometimes feel like something less healthy, like the bacon. If I don’t feel cheerful, sometimes I have a bar of chocolate.

M:OK,then what about this one My friend has one like this, and everyone likes it.
W:Those kinds of dogs always have health problems. Plus, they bark a lot. We don’t want to annoy our neighbors.
M:So what do you suggest

M:OK.
W:And second, you need to show me you have the sense of responsibility. That means cleaning your room, doing your homework, and helping around the house.
M:I promise!

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m pleased to announce the winner of the 2018 song-writing competition. As you probably know, every year, young songwriters from our town enter our annual spring competition held here in the beautiful Brook Theater. When local musician Fred McGill started the event four years ago,we had no idea how much it would grow. In 2017, over 100 people sent in their songs. This year the number of people who participated doubled. It’s wonderful to see the talent and energy of the next generation. Our judges were amazed by the musical skills they saw and heard. Congratulations to all the teenagers who sent in their songs. It was a difficult choice, but our committee has made a selection. Let’s clap our hands for Maryanne James! Maryanne, where are you Please join me on stage! There she is! Maryanne,we loved the way you sang about everything from the colors of your garden to the eyes of children. Please accept this prize. We hope it encourages you to continue writing songs when you start music school in the fall. Finally, we’d like to ask you to perform a song for our audience.
