Unit 3 Inventors and inventions
In the remote mountains of South Korea, about as far away as one can get from the country's high?tech cities, teenage Internet addicts are turning up for a 12?day boot camp.
Kyle Won's addiction is out of control. He spends 10 hours a day on the Internet. Now Kyle's smartphone is taken away.“I'm really worried because I won't have my phone for 12 days but I trust other things will fill my time,” he said. The teachers here do what they can to get them socializing again; for many, the only friends they have had are online.“I have relationships on the Internet and a real distance has grown with my real?life friends and I know it's not good,” Kyle said. The teachers show them other possibilities and bring back dreams and hopes that have been buried by their addictions. “We teach them methods of self?managing their desire to use the Internet so they can continue to use them when they go back home,” Shim Yong?chool,a teacher here, said. After just two days Kyle said it was helping. He's set a good example to others though he hasn't reached the goal completely.
South Korean psychiatrists (精神病学家) are urging more actions as they are finding evidence that too much screen time is a barrier to the developing minds. Professor Kang Seak Young from Dankook University said the addiction was damaging critical thinking. “It affects the frontal lobes(额叶) which are important for critical analysis,”Professor Kang said.“ Reading a book while guessing what happens in the story next shows activity in frontal lobes but playing popular computer games for a long time shows no activity.”
South_Korea_is_one_of_the_most_wired_nations_on_Earth,but_it_does_have_a_cost.One in every 10 kids is an addict,so the country is now learning how to manage its high?tech future to avoid more serious consequences.

Urban Wildlife
Cities are diverse ecosystems. In addition to visitors from the wild,a large number of species share our urban areas. As our cities spread,we need to think about what it is like for other species to have human neighbors.
Cities are built for humans. __1__ For example, most city parks are kept neat and tidy so that humans will find them beautiful. But when we cut grass or plant flowers,we destroy natural habitats.
__2__ When a bridge in Austin,Texas was repaired, engineers added small gaps running along the length of its bottom. This made a good home for bats, and soon the bridge was the home of thousands of bats. __3__ Now,they have come to value their winged(有翼的)neighbors. The bats are a tourist attraction, and they eat lots of bugs every night.
There are also structures built with the aim of bringing wildlife into the city. The Olympic Forest Park is a good example. The park used native plants and created open, natural space for wildlife. The result is a zone in Beijing with over 160 species of birds. In many ways, the park is the opposite of a zoo. __4__
If we learn to share our space,we can become better neighbors to the wildlife around us. __5__ Our own future will be endangered too.
A.They are built to protect birds.
B.Our actions sometimes help other species.
C.If we do not, more species will become extinct.

Deep in the forest,my husband and I had fun climbing over and crawling under the downed trees that blocked the dirt path before us.It was May,yet we walked up a snow covered hill. When we noticed our jeans were wet up to our knees,it did not dampen our spirits. Not once did we say,“Let's turn around.” This was our vacation, and we were on an adventure.Little did we know this was the beginning of many more surprises.
The trail was marked as an easy one kilometer hike, yet we were already walking a long distance. Our lightheartedness stopped when we came out into a clearing and saw a parking lot without our rental car in it.As my eyes scanned the surroundings, nothing looked familiar. My heart raced.I realized we were lost in a national park that did not officially open for another week.
Usually,I am the calm one in the relationship, but my husband surprised me with his calmness. This did not comfort me;in fact,it heightened my fear.As we walked,I asked my husband to call for help, but there was no cell phone signal in this isolated(偏僻的)area.
It was awfully quiet except for our footsteps hitting the road, and my heavy breathing. My husband suggested we conserve energy and walk slower. With each step on the road,my feet and thighs hurt while my mind raced with thoughts about people who got lost in the Canadian woods for days.
My vision sharpened.I noticed everything around me:the trees, rocks and snow.I thought we could eat the snow on the ground in case we needed water. For the first time in my life,I was ready and willing to get a ride, but we did not find a single car on the road.We focused on each other, made joint decisions and connected through gratitude. We managed to stay on the main road and walked straight on.

1.What do the teachers in the camp teach teenagers to do
A.Self-manage their smartphones.
B.Attain something beyond the Internet.
C.Make online friends more wisely.
D.Keep away from electronic products.
根据第二段中的“The teachers here do what they can to get them socializing again”和“The teachers show them other possibilities and bring back dreams and hopes that have been buried by their addictions”可知,这里的老师尽其所能让学生们重新融入社会,向他们展示其他的可能性,并让他们意识到被网瘾所埋葬的梦想和希望。
2.Why does the author mention Kyle's story
A.He faced the most serious addiction.
B.He has succeeded in kicking the addiction.
C.He's the representative of the addicts.
D.He participated in the camp actively.
根据第二段中的“Kyle Won's addiction is out of control. He spends 10 hours a day on the Internet. Now Kyle's smartphone is taken away”和“After just two days Kyle said it was helping”以及对Kyle和训练营的介绍可知,作者以Kyle为代表,谈论网瘾青少年在戒网瘾训练营的相关情况。]
3.What does Paragraph 3 intend to tell us
A.The importance of offline reading.
B.The effects of frontal lobes on thinking.
C.The popularity of kids' Internet games.
D.The harm of Internet addiction to brains.
4.Which saying can explain the underlined sentence in the last paragraph
A.There are two sides to every coin.
B.No pain,no gain.
C.It's good to learn at another man's cost.
D.Prevention is better than cure.
根据画线句“South Korea is one of the most wired nations on Earth, but it does have a cost”和其后的“One in every 10 kids is an addict”可知,韩国是世界上网络最发达的国家之一,但这也是有“代价”的,网络的普遍导致韩国十分之一的孩子染上网瘾。 故A项There are two sides to every coin“凡事都有两面性”正确。]

答案:
Paragraph 1:
My husband suddenly spotted a small building on a hill in the distance. In no time did we find ourselves heading for it.We were filled with hope and excitement to find such a building in the middle of nowhere. We climbed up the hill at a swinging pace as if all the pains were gone.As we approached,a sign came into sight, which read:Administration Office. However,it was not open for business. The empty hall made us nervous all at once.We stood there hopelessly, wondering what to do next.
Paragraph 2:
Just then,a friendly woman appeared, saying,“Hello.”I could barely hold back my enthusiasm and blurted out,“We're lost!” She comforted us and opened a room for us to take a break.Seeing we were cold and hungry, she treated us to hot chocolate. After studying the map,we figured out that our car was parked over three kilometers away. She offered us a ride back to our car and we accepted gladly.I felt relieved to see our rental car again. What a blessing to have such an unforgettable experience!
