Many graduation ceremonies look different. But for Melody Ormond, it looked different because of the classmate who graduated alongside her — her grandmother, 75-year-old Pat Ormond. They both went to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and graduated together.
Pat took her first college class at Kennesaw State University 42 years ago. After one semester, she dropped out to move to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she spent the next several decades working as an accountant and raising a family. While she did take an occasional class at UTC, she says her family continued to encourage her to go back to finish her degree, especially after she retired. She agreed when her granddaughter decided to move to study psychology at UTC after a year at Berea College in Kentucky. They both entered UTC with enough college credits to make graduating together a possibility.
Pat and Melody graduated on November 20 as part of UTC’s 2020 class. The achievement has also made Pat somewhat of a celebrity.
“We are so proud to have graduates like Melody Ormond and her grandmother, Pat Ormond, in the UTC class of 2020,” said Steven R. Angle, UTC Chancellor,” Together, they personify the determination, commitment and love for lifelong learning we encourage in every UTC graduate.”
Pat hopes that she can be an example to other non-traditional college students who want to get their degrees. “Learning never stops,” Pat said. “That’s something that my father taught me when I was young. No matter what you do, learning never stops. Even if it’s auditing (旁听) a few classes, there’s always that option. “Pat isn’t planning to stop anytime soon. She’s already working on another degree — a bachelor’s degree in history.
Meanwhile, her granddaughter, who is hunting jobs, is interested in getting a master’s degree in clinical psychology so she can become a lawyer. But she says she’s in no rush. Her nana has taught her that she has plenty of time.
24. What was special for Melody’s graduation ceremony
A. It looked different from others.
B. Her grandmother was 75-year-old.

Hundreds of people die at sea every year due to ship and airplane accidents. Emergency teams have little time to rescue those in the water because the probability of finding a person alive falls dramatically after six hours. Beyond tides and challenging weather conditions, unsteady coastal currents often make search and rescue operations extremely difficult.
New insight into coastal flows gained by an international research team led by George Haller, Professor of Nonlinear Dynamics at ETH Zurich, promises to enhance the search and rescue techniques currently in use. Using tools from dynamical system theory and ocean data, the team has developed an algorithm (算法) to predict where objects and people floating in water will go. “Our work has a clear potential to save lives,” says Mattia Serra, the first author of a study recently published in Nature Communications.
In today’s rescue operations at sea, complicated models of ocean dynamics and weather forecast are used to predict the path of floating objects. For fast-changing coastal waters, however, such predictions are often inaccurate due to uncertain boundaries and missing data. As a result, a search may be launched in the wrong location, causing the loss of precious time.
Haller’s research team obtained mathematical results predicting that objects floating on the ocean’s surface should gather along a few special curves (曲线) which they call TRansient Attracting Profiles (TRAPs). These curves can’t be seen with our eyes but can be tracked from instant ocean surface current data using recent mathematical methods developed by the ETH team. This enables quick and precise planning of search paths that are less sensitive to uncertainties in the time and place of the accident.
In cooperation with a team from MIT, the ETH team tested their new, TRAPs-based search algorithm in two separate ocean experiments near Martha’s Vineyard, which is on the northeastern coast of the United States. Working from the same real-time data available to the Coast Guard, the team successfully identified TRAPs in the region in real time. They found that buoys and manikins (浮标和人体模型) thrown in the water indeed quickly gathered along these emerging curves. “Of several competing approaches tested in this project, this was the only algorithm that researchers consistently found the right location with,” says Haller.
“Our results are rapidly obtained, easy to interpret and cheap to perform,” points out Serra. Haller stresses, “Our hope is that this method will become a standard part of the tool kit of coast guards everywhere.”
28. In a search and rescue operation, ______.
A. the survival rate drops to almost zero after six hours
B. the use of dynamics leads to the wrong location
C. weather conditions are a determining factor
D. changing currents present a challenge
29. What is the distinct feature of the new algorithm

D. It figures out how tides change over time.
30. What’s paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The collection of data.
B. The testing of the algorithm.
C. The identification of the TRAPs.
D. The cooperation of two research teams.

It’s a question that has been asked for years: Is a dishwasher or washing dishes by hand greener Which uses less energy and water
A few years ago, the answer was that the dishwasher was better but a very careful hand-washer could probably use about the same amount of water and less energy. However, much has changed since then. Technology combined with good design has made the dishwasher greatly better over the years, to the point where there’s hardly a question. Studies are showing that modern dishwashers can save more water than most hand-washers.
Dishwashers are even more efficient. Modern dishwashers have pre-heaters that increase the water temperature up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit to sanitize (消毒) them. The dishwasher also has a timer that lets you set it to turn on at a later time when the power rates are lower.
On the other hand, none of the studies do an analysis of what it takes in terms of energy and water to actually build the dishwasher and replace it every 10 years or so. Nor does it take into account a Swedish study that found that children in families that wash dishes by hand are less likely to develop fever probably due to the “hygiene hypothesis (卫生假说)”, which says the reason why kids fall ill is that their surroundings are actually too clean. If you’re not willing to fill up the sinks, the researchers point out that maybe the dishwasher is one labor-saving machine that does a better job than you can especially if you value your time. The researchers write, “When a user’s time spent washing dishes is valued, machine dishwashers pay for themselves within a year of use.”
32. Why does the author raise two questions in the first paragraph
A. To express the author’s doubts.
B. To introduce the topic.
C. To show different ways to wash dishes.
D. To compare various ideas about dishwashers.
33. What is the advantage of the dishwasher
A. It is more environment-friendly.
B. It takes less time to wash the dishes.
C. It uses less water to wash the dishes.
D. It needs less hot water to sanitize the dishes.
34.What does the Swedish study find out about dishwashers
A. Their effect on kids’ health.
B. Their effect on water and energy saving.
C. Their help in keeping the environment healthy.
D. Their help in improving kids’ health condition.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The Advantage Of The Dishwasher
B. How To Choose A Proper Way To Do The Dishes
C. The New Technology For Washing Dishes
D. How Dishwashers Benefit Our Lives

Two summers ago, I decided to begin a weight loss journey but had no idea where to start. And now, two years later, I have yet again decided to start being healthy and I need some knowledge about what to do. Now, I want to share it with all of you.
The most important thing that I have come to realize is that you have to see this as a lifestyle change, not just a diet that can end or fail. 36 You will also feel less pressure if you eat a burger once in a while since you think you haven’t failed a diet and that you can always go twice as hard the next day.
37 It is calories in versus calories out if you put it in simple terms. If you want to lose weight, you must be eating in a way that your net gain of calories at the end of the day is negative.
38 It is better to eat healthy food with more calories than a low-cal pack of chips. Calorie counting can also become a bit unhealthy if not well controlled. So I recommend just eating well and controlling the amounts of food instead.
Exercise is also vital to a healthier life. Although cardio (健心运动) is known for its quick result, weights are also essential. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn. Therefore, people with more muscle mass are able to burn what they eat quicker, resulting in a greater calorie reduction. 39
Everyone has a different body and what I eat may actually be bad for your weight loss.
40 It may take time to find out what your body can handle and needs, but do not quit. Good luck and happy eating.
A. However, calories are not everything.
B. Moreover, weight loss is essentially just math.
C. Diets can help you lose some weight temporarily.
D. It is also just beneficial in life to be physically strong!
E. If you don’t, it is likely that the weight will come back.
F. So my tip here is to eat what makes you personally feel good.
G. Therefore, it is very important to calculate and control calories accurately.

Having taken part in the inter-school storytelling championship for the past two years, I was a shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited (自负的). I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse for the contest ” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.
注意:

由第一段中的“it looked different because of the classmate who graduated alongside her — her grandmother, 75-year-old Pat Ormond”可知,与Melody一同毕业的还有她的75岁的祖母Pat Ormond,这使得她的毕业典礼显得特殊。
由第二段中的“her family continued to encourage her to go back to finish her degree”及最后一段中的“But she says she’s in no rush. Her nana has taught her that she has plenty of time”可知,Pat的家庭成员之间相互支持,相互勉励。
根据第一段中的“Beyond tides and challenging weather conditions, unsteady coastal currents often make search and rescue operations extremely difficult”可知,除了潮汐和挑战性的天气状况外,不稳定的沿岸流经常使搜寻和营救行动变得极其困难。
根据第四段中的“These curves... can be tracked from instant ocean surface current data using... This enables quick and precise planning of search paths”可知,这些曲线不能被眼睛看到,但是通过使用由ETH团队研发的算法,能根据海洋表面的实时水流数据追踪到这些曲线,这可以快速和精确地规划搜索路径,即新算法的显著特征是它能够追踪到曲线的路径,故选B项。
根据第二段中的“Studies are showing that modern dishwashers can save more water than most hand washers”可知,现代洗碗机洗碗比大部分人用手洗碗更加省水。
根据题干中的“the Swedish study”可以定位至第四段中的“children in families that wash dishes by hand are less likely to develop fever . .
36. E E选项中的“If you don’t”是“If you don’t see this as a lifestyle change”的省略形式,而“it is likely that the weight will come back”是“If you don’t see this as a lifestyle change”带来的结果。
37. B B选项中的“essentially just math”与“calories in versus calories out”以及“your net gain of calories at the end of the day is negative”相吻合。
39. D D项中的“to be physically strong”与段落中的“The more muscle you have”以及“with more muscle mass”相照应,故本空填D项。
40. F “Everyone has a different body and what I eat may actually be bad for your weight loss”与F选项“So my tip here is to eat what makes you personally feel good”为因果关系,故本空填F项。

45. A 根据下文中的“because I’ve been in that situation before”可知,因为作者以前也经历过这样的情况,所以作者可以理解这些人。
46. B 根据下文中的“I grew crazy about certain subjects. 27 , these subjects didn’t interest other kids and my teachers”可知,作者对某些科目越来越着迷,其他学生和老师对这些科目并不感兴趣,这表明作者应该是意识到自己跟别人不一样了。
47. D “I grew crazy about certain subjects”与“these subjects didn’t interest other kids and my teachers”形成了鲜明对比,再结合选项可知,应用unfortunately“不幸地,遗憾地,可惜地”衔接。
48. C 下文“my kindergarten teacher said she would seream at me if I 29 snakes or mice one more time”是对上文作者对某些科目感兴趣的具体解释,是在陈述一个事实。by accident意外地;in return作为回应;in fact确切地说,事实上;at most最多。
50. B 根据上文中的“I 29 snakes and mice one more time while she was teaching the day of the week”可知,作者在老师教星期时提蛇和老鼠,故可推知作者会因为无法集中注意力而惹上麻烦,进而遭到其他孩子的嘲笑。
51. D 根据上文中的“these subjects didn’t interest other kids and my teachers”可知,作者喜欢的学科其他学生和老师并不感兴趣,表明作者和其他青少年的兴趣是不同的。
52. A 根据上文中的“she would scream at me if I 29 snakes or mice one more time”和“other kids began to laugh at me”可知,老师的大吼,其他孩子的嘲笑,这些都是刻薄的具体表现。
53. C 空后的“facts about volcanoes, whales, and many other scientific things”是作者知道或了解的事实。
live a(n) ... life意为“过着一种……
根据句意及下文中的“Instead of holding on to old ideas and existing design”可知,此处表示“最新的潮流趋势”,故用latest。
The Bittersweet Moments
How time flies! I’m now in Senior Three. Looking back on the senior school life, I have experienced bittersweet moments.
When I was in Senior One, I was poor at spoken English and afraid of speaking in front of people. In order to improve my English and overcome my shyness, I signed up for an English speech contest. I spent all spare time practicing English and gathered my courage to speak in public. Sometimes I felt so miserable that I wanted to give up, but my parents encouraged me to hold on. Hard work paid off. I won first place in the final, which brightened my heart.
I realize that nothing is impossible in life. Stick to it and you will succeed one day.
Paragraph 1:
Soon, it was my turn to talk. Facing the crowd, I found myself suffering from stage fright. I spoke in a nervous voice and even stuttered a few times as I forgot parts of the story. My legs trembled and so did my voice. Seeing my terrible performance, the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. I had never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end, I walked off the stage, with all tears in my eyes.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, results were announced after the contest. I did not win any prizes, which was not surprising at all. I felt ashamed when I faced my classmates and Ms. Sara. I regretted underestimating my opponents and overestimating myself. My vanity had cost me the championship. I regretted being so arrogant. I had learned my lesson well and finally understood the meaning of the saying, “Modesty helps one to make progress, but conceit makes one lag behind.”

W: Can you show me how to save a file on this computer (5)
M: Sure. Just click the tab that says “file” and hit “save”. Your file should then be on the desktop.

M: Yes. I just have to get the picture that I drew for her. (6)
W: Great. Let’s put it in this box, so it stays nice and flat.
M: I used the colored pencils that she got me for my birthday to make it, too! She will be happy about that.
W: Yes, she will. She loves your artwork! I wish I had time to bake a cake. (7)
M: She would have liked that. You are the best baker, Mom.
Text 7
M: Tina, are you coming to band practice this week Our show is this Friday…only two days away! (8)

M: Did you fix your guitar My sister has a new guitar you can probably borrow if your guitar is still broken. (9)
W: Thanks, but I can only play music on my guitar because it’s a left-handed guitar…it’s for people who use their left hands for most things. I fixed my guitar on Monday night.
M: Why didn’t you fix it sooner We only have two days until our show. (9)
W: I’ve been so busy this month! I have to work at the grocery store and watch my little sister until my mom comes home from work.

W: Hi, are you Don I’m Lynn. I saw the advertisement you put on the Internet about selling your car. (10)
M: Hi, Lynn. Nice to meet you. Thanks for your interest. Here’s my car. It’s a 2006 Honda Civic. I took a lot of road trips in it! It is not perfect, but it is safe to drive and it has new tires.
W: Is anything broken
M: The radio is broken and the heater is broken, (12) but the air conditioner works well.
W: I think you should lower the price because the radio and the heater are broken. (12) If you don’t lower the price, I don’t think I want to buy it. (11)
M: Sorry, but I’m not lowering the price. It’s a very safe car, even if the radio is broken. Would you like to drive the car so you can see if you like it
W: No, thank you. I am worried something else is broken too.
Text 9
W: My mom thinks that we should name the baby after her. (13) What do you think
M: I think your mom is a little too selfish! Plus, I don’t really think “Betty Bettson” sounds like a name I’d want to have. (13)
W: OK. I just had to ask. I didn’t like the idea much, either. I really love the name Laura, though.
M: That’s nice. But I think we should give her a really strong name so she’s tough. (14) How about Helga or Josephine
W: Those names make me think of unattractive women! Helga sounds like a lady who could carry me under her arm!
M: That’s the idea! I don’t want anyone thinking they can mess with my daughter. I want her to be able to stand up to people, especially any boys who might try to look at her.
W: I don’t think a name has that much power, dear. (15)
M: OK. I see your point. I’ll just have to take care of the boys myself. I know this baby is going to be beautiful!
W: That’s right. Let’s not give her an ugly name! How about something more elegant, like Victoria (16)
M: I like that! (16)
Text 10
Nicholas Sparks is an American author and storyteller whose books have consistently been turned into major Hollywood films. Although not all of his books were sold to Hollywood, all have been The New York Times best-sellers. He has sold over 97 million copies worldwide, (17) with over 65 million of them within the United States alone. He lives with his family in North Carolina. He is also considered to be very generous with his money. In 2011, he created the Nicholas Sparks Foundation to make more opportunities available to children from poor families. He said, “Education is the gift that changed my life.” (20) His foundation, which he started with his wife, creates scholarships for children from low-income families in rural communities. (18) He and his wife also founded the Epiphany School in New Bern, North Carolina. (19) The school’s main goal is to help students practice the values of respect, responsibility, service, and honesty on a daily basis. Sparks has had a very successful career, and he owes that to education. “The education I received growing up prepared me for the world I’d be facing in the future,” the author said. Even though he is worth an estimated 75 million dollars or so, Sparks seems to live the values he presents in his books and films.
