Hi David,
I’m glad to hear you’ll come to China. Maanshan, located in the southeast of Anhui Province, is a beautiful city full of culture and history. Visiting the City Museum is a good way to learn about Maanshan, so I’d like to take you there. Besides, we can go climbing and boating, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the wonderful views here. And then, you will be invited to our class and talk about our school life together. My friends and I will have a party for you at home, and you can try our traditional Chinese food. I guess that might be quite different from yours. If possible, I’ll take you to watch Huangmei Opera, the traditional Chinese opera popular across China.
Hope you’ll have fun here.

I was very fortunate to be selected by Kindspring to receive $100 for the monthly kindness competition and it has helped to make a beautiful difference in people’s lives.
The idea is simple. I took a lot of fallen branches and hung them from the ceiling with the help of volunteers and friends. Then we hung strings with pins attached to them from the branches. I got a whole lot of art supplies and as people came in for the art exhibit, they were encouraged to create a piece of art or a positive message to hang from the tree.
The tree changed into this really fun way of exchanging positive messages. If you were to hang a message up, you had to take a message down for you to keep. The experience was really amazing. People of all ages and from all walks of life were sharing art and encouragement through the tree.
With the $100 I received from Kindspring, I made a total of seven more trees. I am putting them all over our community(社区). One will go to a youth shelter for homeless teens and one will be put right in the middle of town on our public square. They will have paper and art supplies at the base for people to use in creating a message or piece of art. For the classroom I was able to provide them with new colored pencils, markers, and some sketchbooks, which they all loved. The act is to create communications that are positive and can influence people’s lives in great ways just by doing a simple act of kindness. The messages people receive can be kept with them forever as a reminder of the good in the world, or they can pass them along to others. The beauty of the idea is that the messages have unlimited possibilities.
25. The author received the award for _______.
A. making more trees B. passing on positive messages
C. holding an art exhibition D. protecting the environment
26. What is people’s attitude towards the practice
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Disappointed.
27. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text
A. To explain how to grow trees.
B. To call for the young to create art works.
C. To advise more children to be volunteers.
D. To encourage people to do a simple act of kindness.

Last summer, I began the biggest adventure of my life. I moved from a tiny city in England to one of the largest cities in the world. As the plane landed in Beijing, I felt excited that I’d finally arrived after months of planning.
One of the first things I did was visiting one of the city’s hutongs(胡同). Strolling (闲逛)around the narrow streets, the warm air was filled with the smell of delicious food as people played mahjong and rode their old-fashioned bikes. This was the first moment I thought, “Wow, I’m in China.”
Beijing couldn’t be more different to my own home city, Preston, which has a population of just 114,000. It has one shopping street that’s around 500 meters from one end to the other and on Sunday, all the shops close at 4:00 pm. There isn’t a great deal of choice when it comes to restaurants, either, and as a fan of food, I couldn’t wait to see what Beijing has to offer. I still don’t have a favorite dish here yet.
I’m slowly getting used to the fast-paced lifestyle and different way of life , but I still find some habits here quite strange and humorous.
British people are raised to not make any kind of noise at the dinner table or in public, so to hear the loud noise of Chinese diners or the throat-clearing sounds of colleagues (同事) was a funny culture shock at first .
Something else I’ve discovered is the attention that being a foreigner brings. On the subway or in streets and restaurants, some people stare and try to take secret photos of me. It seems that I am a famous person or a popular star.
In the future, I hope to see many other parts of China. My dream is to buy a motorbike to travel from one end to the other of this beautiful country, taking photos and meeting new people along the way.
My adventure here is just beginning, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

① Taking pictures of foreigners ② Clearing throat in the workplace
③ Playing mahjong in public area ④ Smiling kindly toward foreigners
⑤ Eating food with a loud noise
A. ①②③ B.①②⑤ C. ②③④ D.③④⑤
30. We can infer (推断)from the article that the writer ___________.
A. is a terrible motorbike rider
B. is looking forward to becoming a famous person in China
C. has already visited many Chinese cities
D. is interested in making new Chinese friends

A. tell us about the author’s travel plans in China
B. compare the lifestyle in Beijing with that in Preston
C. share the writer’s experience as a foreign visitor in China

Newly discovered fossils(化石)in New Zealand have revealed a giant penguin(企鹅)that was as big as an adult man. The creature was almost the same size and weight as professional Canadian hockey player Sidney Crosby, who plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Scientists estimate it was a little shorter than Crosby, at 178 centimeters (Crosby is 180 centimeters), and nine kilograms heavier.
The new discovery is larger than any other ancient penguin that scientists have found, says Gerald Mayr. He is with the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum in Frankfurt, Germany. A possibly larger penguin is only known to scientists from a small piece of leg bone. That makes estimating its size difficult. The largest living penguin species is the emperor penguin in Antarctica. It stands about 120 centimeters tall. Mayr and others described the giant bird in a paper published this week.
The fossils are between 56 million to 60 million years old. That is almost as old as the earliest-known penguin fossils, says Daniel Ksepka, who has studied New Zealand fossil penguins but was not a part of the new study. Ksepka told the Associated Press that the new discovery shows that penguins grew very large, very quickly. They grew just after a mass extinction(灭绝) 66 million years ago – the extinction that is best known for killing off dinosaurs, he said.
The event played a role in penguin history, as well. Before that, a non-flying seabird like the penguin would have been threatened by larger animals living in or near the water, as they competed for the same food. But after the extinction killed most of the larger animals, the ability to fly became less important. This helped penguins survive and grow. The question that remains, however, is what happened to the giant birds Mayr said researchers believe they died out when large marine mammals, such as toothed whales and seals, showed up and started competing with the penguins for food and safe breeding places. These newer animals may also have hunted the giant penguins.
32. Sidney Crosby is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to______.
A. show how big the ancient penguin was
B. show the relationship between penguins and men
C. tell us he is interested in the newly discovered fossils
D. tell us how famous the hockey player is
33. What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The limitation of researching time B. The shortage of hard evidence
C. The lack of researching fund D. The absence of enough efforts
34. From the passage we can learn that______.
A. Daniel Ksepka took part in the study of newly discovered fossils
B. the largest living penguin species is larger than the newly discovered penguin
C. the exact reason for giant penguins’ extinction has already been found out
D. the giant penguins survived and grew after the extinction of most larger animals
35. The author wrote this passage in order to______.
A. inform people of newly discovered fossils of giant penguins
B. help people know more about different ancient giant penguins
C. teach people how to study fossils of ancient penguins
