The spring before our son Hank was scheduled to enter kindergarten, we were invited to the school's "Kindergarten Round-up". The title led me to believe that Hank and I would be enjoying a fun night.
We arrived to find several on-the-spot tests to see where Hank ranked academically. Somewhat nervously, I watched as Hank recited the alphabet(字母表), counted as high as he could, and arranged blocks in a series of confusing patterns. So far, so good. I breathed a sigh of relief.
“All right, Hank,” the tester said, “just a few more easy questions.” Then she explained to me that she wanted to hear what Hank thinks was the logical thing to do in certain situations. I smiled and nodded, but inside I felt a fresh flash of panic. What if Hank couldn't reach any logical conclusions
After several dialogues, like “Eating too much sugar ” “Tooth decay!”, the tester nodded her head. “Okay, Hank, tell me what you'd do if you went into a dark room.” Without thinking, Hank said, “Be brave.”
The tester waited a moment before promoting, “What else would you do Wouldn't you turn on a light ” “Oh, yeah,” Hank said, “if I could reach it.”
Obviously, being brave wasn't the expected answer, but as I listened, all I could think about was how many events awaited him when bravery would be enormously helpful. While it's smart to turn on a light, it never hurts to be brave while you're waiting for your eyes to adjust to the sudden brightness. From the mouth of my child, I realized that I'd handed my son advice that applied to my life just as much as it did to his.
Hank and I left the "Kindergarten Round-up" with a light heart, both believing he was going to be just fine.
24. What’s the purpose of the “Kindergarten Round-up”
A. To evaluate kids' academic level. B. To help kids pass kindergarten tests.

26. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 6
A. She taught Hank an important lesson.
B. She was happy about Hank's answer.
C. She got valuable advice from the tester.
D. She was dissatisfied with the tester's reaction.
27. What's the best title for the text
A. No Need to Turn on a Light B. Kindergarten Will Just Be Fine
C. A Fruitless Kindergarten Round-up D. Being Brave Is the Same Important

Frankenstein: an undervalued novel
Frankenstein’s monster might be one of the most popular roles people play when celebrating Halloween. But do you know where this impressive image originally comes from
The creation of Frankenstein dates back to the summer of 1816, when some young people were spending their holiday in Switzerland. Usually the weather in summer was pleasant, but that summer it rained quite a lot, so for most of the time, the group were trapped in their cottage. They started thinking about entertaining activities to have fun. Finally, they decided to join in the writing competition suggested by Lord Byron: Everyone should write a creepy ghost story and share it with others, and the writer of the creepiest one would win. During the competition, 18-year-old Mary Shelley came up with the idea of an ugly monster created from human body parts. Two years later, she published her first novel, Frankenstein.
Yet Frankenstein isn’t similar to other horror books. In the book, the monster can explain the story from his perspective(观点). Although he is scary, ugly, and violent, he has understandable human emotions, and the book indicates that his violent actions are reasonable. He explains that he becomes cruel and violent because he has been treated cruelly and violently by the scientist who creates him and also the people he meets. The book raises awareness of our responsibilities to other people and also inspires us to put ourselves in others’ shoes.
It also talks about an imaginary scientific experiment and its effects, and because of this, it is considered as the first science fiction novel, or the beginning of science fiction. This means that the novel has probably influenced a lot of science fiction created later. Perhaps without Frankenstein, we wouldn’t have the chance to enjoy Edward Scissorhands, Captain America, or Star Wars.
However, I enjoy Frankenstein mostly because it can be explained differently. The problems it covers are simple and universal. It can be understood as a metaphor for family relationships, human emotions, or individualism, or as a criticism of misuse of science.
28. Which word best describes how the story of Frankenstein comes into being
A. Hard. B. Accidentally. C. Mysteriously. D. Amusingly.
29. What does the underlined word “creepy” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean
A. Creative. B. Interesting. C. Strange. D. Frightening.
30. In the author’s opinion, what makes Frankenstein different from other horror books
A. The way it comes into being. B. The themes it tries to explore.
C. The writing techniques it uses. D. The terrible experiences its character has.
31. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To give comments on Frankenstein.
B. To recommend the book Frankenstein.
C. To introduce the story in Frankenstein.
D. To show why the author loves Frankenstein.

Google has announced plans to stop supporting tools designed to follow Internet users across the web in order to target them with specific advertising.
Such tools are known as cookies-small data files that are stored on an Internet user's computer as they browse(浏览) different websites. This data can be read by web servers to identify web browsing behaviors of the user. Cookies make it possible for users to avoid having to repeatedly enter their user names and passwords to get access to websites they use often. But the use of cookies raises major privacy concerns, with critics saying a user's browsing history should not be recorded just to target them with ads.
Google announced in 2020 it had decided “to remove support for third-party cookies” from its Chrome browser. In another online announcement, Google repeated this promise, saying it will not build new tools to replace current cookie technology.
In explaining its decision, Google referred to a Pew Research study that found 72 percent of Americans feel that almost all of what they do online is tracked by advertisers. Google's decision to remove third-party cookies also followed increasing efforts to protect privacy in Europe and the United States. Google said the current Internet advertising model needs to change to answer “the growing concerns people have about their privacy and how their personal identity is being used.”
In January, however, Google's plan was questioned by British competition regulators. The country's Competition and Markets Authority announced it had launched an investigation into whether the changes would give Google an unfair advantage over competitors in Internet advertising. The agency said it received objections to the plan from Marketers for an Open Web, a league of technology and publishing companies. The group charges Google with “abusing(滥用) its powerful position” by attempting to create a new advertising model.
In its latest announcement, Google said,“We will not build alternate identifiers (替代标识符) to track Internet users as they browse across the web, nor will we use them in our products.”
32. According to the text, what do you know about cookies
A. Cookies are inconvenient for web users.
B. The users should repeat their passwords to enter websites.
C. Google uses Cookies to monitor the web users' private life.
D. The tracks of the web users can be followed by the web servers.
33. Why did Google make the decision
A. To use an advanced tool. B. To get more personal information,
C. To respond to concerns about privacy. D. To create a fair Internet advertising model.
34. What does the investigation show us
A. All people don't accept the Google's plan.
B. It was organized by an agency of the US.
C. Google has the biggest advantages on the Internet.
D. Marketers for an Open Web are in favor of the Google's plan.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. Privacy should be protected.
B. Google will change advertising model.
C. There should not be many advertisements on the web.
D. Cookies will be removed from Google for privacy protection.

I couldn't even sort through the first box of our dog Bama's toys without bursting into tears. My husband, Alan, found me sitting on the floor, holding our dog's favorite toy. He gently pulled me to my feet. “It's okay, Lisa,” he said. “I'll put these away. Why don't you go outside and get some air ”
I nodded.
It had been a few months since our beloved Bama had passed away. Alan and I didn't have children. Our boxer (拳师犬) was our baby. After Bama's death, we couldn't bring ourselves to go through his toys to decide what to keep. I told myself I'd do it when I was ready. Apparently, I still wasn't.
Now I sat on my front porch (门廊) and sobbed. Friends and family had suggested we get another dog, but Alan and I rejected the idea. We couldn't go through that kind of heartbreak again.
I gazed out over the yard. Across the street was a dog. A boxer. Was he real or just my wishful imagination I blinked. The boxer was still there. We locked eyes. He came across the street, straight toward me. Hesitantly, I offered my hand. He sniffed it eagerly then he licked (舔) me. I let out a surprised laugh. He pushed his head into my lap to be petted.
This dog was younger than Bama, smaller. He was well-fed and well-dressed. He wore a collar but had no ID. I knew he must belong to someone in the neighborhood, but I'd never seen another boxer around. I would have remembered if I had.
“Where did you come from ”I asked the dog, scratching(挠、抓) him behind the ears.
He just sat there at ease. He didn't seem lost. Just as if he were dropping by for a visit.
“Alan!” I called. “You have to come to see this!”
Alan joined me, and we sat together in surprise for a moment. Then the boxer got up and slowly ran off.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
