Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He would suddenly fall ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.
He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He worked with the seriously sick children. He would talk, play and do arts with them.
One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralysed(使瘫痪)her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started to visit her in her room, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. Imagine this. There’s an apple and a piece of cake on a table. Which one would you like The delicious cake or the healthy apple A bestseller, Willpower: Rediscovering Our Greatest Strength, suggests that willpower(意志力) is the ability to make decisions that are better for us in the long term, rather than in the short term.
Here is a famous experiment in the book The Marshmallow Test. In 1972, Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 four-year-olds to six-year-olds. In the experiment, each child was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow(棉花软糖), if they waited fifteen minutes, they’d be given a second one (and then they could eat both).
So, what did the kids do Well, as you can imagine, he got in touch with the children, who, were in their early twenties. And he found that those who’d shown strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle(肌肉), and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets.
So, if you do daily “self-control exercises”, such as making your bed or brushing your teeth, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.
Be careful though. Just like any muscle, your “willpower muscle” can get tired. If you have to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat. In that way, you’ll build up your willpower again.

Most of us have three meals a day. We take food for granted(理所当然). And we don’t think about it. But experts argue that a food crisis is coming. This crisis is going to make us change the way we think about food.
Food is in great need because of the growing world population. By 1960, the population was three billion. It doubled to six billion by 1999. By 2050, this planet will need to feed at least nine billion people. As a result, the food prices will get higher and higher.
So, what can a hungry, crowded world do One suggestion is to eat less meat. Meat uses more natural resources(资源) than grains (谷物).It requires more land to produce one pound of meat than to produce one pound of grain. It also requires between 5 and 10 times more water than vegetables. So, eating less meat will provide more land for farming, and it will save water.
To eat less meat, people will need to change their eating habits. That will not be easy. Americans, for example, always love meat. In general, they eat twice as much meat as people in other countries. At the same time, in developing countries like China and Brazil, sales of meat have doubled in the last 20 years. They will double again by 2050. Demanding for meat will continue to put pressure on natural resources.
World population is increasing, resources are becoming fewer, and food prices are rising. Therefore, we need to rethink what we eat every day. For meat lovers, we don’t need to give up meat completely. But we need to eat more grains and less meat.

Nowadays, more and more people pay attention to their physical health.
There are all kinds of articles and medicine about how to take care of their bodies. Most of them tell people to keep healthy by taking something into their bodies.
However, a recent study in the U.S. examined the influences of having a “higher purpose” on health. 136,265 people took part in 10 different studies, mostly in the United States and Japan.
An important relationship was examined between having a higher purpose in life and reducing the risk of death from all causes, especially from cardiovascular disease (心血管疾病). The people who were observed were around 65 years old at the beginning of the studies, and they had been followed for seven years. During that time, more than 14,500 of them died and more than 4,000 suffered cardiovascular events such as strokes(中风)or heart attacks.
The study showed that a higher sense of purpose has something to do with the reduction of about 20 percent of death from all causes as well as a lower risk of cardiovascular problems. This is a meaningful finding, and the knowledge should encourage us to help people find their purpose. It’s not just nice to have one—it can actually save lives.
“Giving life a higher purpose has long been an important way of life. Now the findings further prove that they may help people to look after their health and bring them a sense of well-being.” said Dr. Alan Rozanski, one of the authors of the study and members of the research team. So keep looking for your purpose!

A general was going to fight a strong enemy. He had only one-tenth the number of men the enemy had. Hearing this news, the soldiers (士兵) were worried. They didn’t think they could possibly win. The general thought for a while and then had an idea. He told his soldiers that they could win the fight only if they followed his new plan.
On the way to the battlefield (战场), the general stopped at a temple and told his men, “After my visit to the temple, I will toss (投掷) a coin. If it comes up heads, we will win; if tails(背面), we will lose. Destiny (命运) holds us in her hand.”
The general went into the temple and wished for victory. Then he came out and tossed a coin in front of his men. The coin came up heads. The soldiers were amazed and thought they would win the coming fight. They fought hard and won in the end.
“No one can change the hand of destiny,” one of his men told the general after they won the fight. They believed that the gods had planned for them to win the fight.

Today we can do everything with apps — pay bills, order food and shop for anything. Mobile technology means we can hold the world in our hands. However, when it comes to technology and healthcare
Let’s start with the ways to get healthcare. Telemedicine can allow a patient to use technology to see the doctor on line and get a diagnosis (诊断) and instructions without leaving home.
In addition, there are many patient websites. These allow for different kinds of interactions about our health needs without involving the medical team. Setting a date with doctors and reading lab results are readily achieved by technology.
A whole new age of medical care seems likely to come in the future. But every coin has two sides. What might be on the other side of techno-healthcare
Firstly, we should think about the healthcare experience as a whole. A usual visit to a doctor begins with a receptionist, who can see and tell how a patient is doing. This may influence the treatment effect. It’s unlikely that a patient website will have such intuition.
Next, sharing the details of one’s life requires trust, which takes time to build. This is certainly true in healthcare.
Lastly, test results can be difficult to understand. When someone without a medical degree sees a flagged result with no explanation on the website, there’s room for all kinds of stories to form in their minds — and also great worry.
So how does medicine adapt (适应) to the new technology age Very talented companies are working on it. There is medical equipment that can be used at home to send important signs and heart sounds through telemedicine. It seems likely that some companies will find a way to explain test results.
But what it will not achieve is the warmth of human interaction and touch. Patients often need someone to listen to — and care about — their journey story, which will never be realized through a human-less technology. Technology should be a tool, but depending on it totally will most certainly have unexpected effects. Let’s not allow our humanity to be one of them.
69.According to the passage, how does technology help healthcare
A.It encourages doctors to voice their needs on the websites.
B.It offers a patient a convenient way to get a diagnosis.
C.It improves relations between doctors and patients.
D.It provides an opportunity to build a medical team.
70.The underlined word “intuition” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.
A.an ability to understand B.an interesting action
C.a chance to win D.a fair decision
71.What do you know about techno-healthcare from the passage
A.Patient websites require trust from doctors.
B.Talented companies can give medical advice.
C.Flagged results may cause worry for patients.
D.Medical equipment collects patients’ stories.
72.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.technology can deal with unexpected effects
B.telemedicine can take the place of usual healthcare
C.it is easy for patients to adapt to the new technology age
D.techno-healthcare should take humanity into consideration

Have you ever had dreams about building a robot Or putting together a spaceship Or even seeing your face made out of chocolate Done. All you need is a 3-D printer!
The possibilities of 3-D printing seem endless. All the user has to do is to design an object on the computer and choose a material to print in. The printers print in hundreds of different materials including glass, sugar and even skin! When the user presses “print”, the 3-D printer spreads the material layer(层) by layer and like magic the object is produced.
The first 3-D printer was invented in 1986 by an American, Charles Hull. But 3-D printing has only become cheap enough recently for most people to use. Designers now use 3-D printing to create unusual things. The Dutch artist Dirk Vander Kooj prints furniture made from old fridges. And doctors have used 3-D printing to print human body parts! The Telegraph reported in February that scientists from Cornell Medical College even printed a man-made ear.
But like a lot of new technologies, if 3-D printing gets into the wrong hands, it can be dangerous. In 2011 a group of four men in the US used 3-D printing to produce ATM skimmers (提款机盗刷器). These were placed on an ATM and stole over $400,000 from users of the ATM. It is terrible to think that criminals like them might one day use a 3-D printer to print a gun.
But for better or for worse, 3-D printing has been put into use. In a few years, you’ll probably be wondering how you could ever live without your 3-D printer!

82.What does the writer think of the 3-D printer
A.It is necessary only for our work. B.It is helpful but dangerous.
C.It is too expensive for most people. D.It is useless in our daily life.

From November 1st to December 10th in 2020, China started its seventh national population census (普查). 7 million census takers have asked each family about their name, gender (性别), age, education, job and so on. This census is different from the ones in the past. For the first time, citizens were encouraged to use smart phones to record their information.
China has a national population census every 10 years. The first one was done in 1953. At that time, there were about 600 million people in China. But China’s population has increased. It was about 1.37 billion in 2010.
For the 2020’s national population census, all residents (居民) of China were included in the census. But Chinese citizens (公民) who had settled (定居) abroad and foreign citizens who were staying in China on either business or tourist visas (签证) were not counted.
“The census is very important for every citizen, said Ning Jizhe, director of the NBS.” It will help improve infrastructure (基础建设) and public services. For example, if census results show that there are many children living in acertain area, the government will know that it should build more schools there. Scientists can also learn more about population growth from the census. In some years, the population grows faster than in others. Even in the same year, population growth is different in different places. Scientists can use the information to find out what causes growth in certain years and places.

Most people have a place to call home on Earth. What about in outer space The International Space Station(ISS) became our first home” in space in 2000. It welcomed its first crew that year, paving the way for 20 years of future research.
“You just have this impression that we’re all citizens of not a particular country, but of the planet,” former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly told National Geographic about working in ISS. “We’re all in this thing called humanity together.”
Over the past 20 years, the ISS has mainly been used as a science lab, hosting 241 people from 19 countries, according to NASA.They have gone on spacewalks, done research on how space affects the human body, and even grown plants in space.
The station’s development has also benefited people on Earth. For example, the station’s water purification(净化) technology has been used in poor areas to provide clean drinking water. The station also helps to warn us of natural disasters, such as earthquakes.
However, after being our home in space for over 7000 days, the station is starting to get old. It has leaked(泄露) air a few times. Scientists think that the station can keep working until 2024. After that, scientists will bring it down to Earth. It is believed that Earth’s atmosphere will burn up most of the station. Other debris(残骸) will fall into the Pacific Ocean.

All the while he would tell her, “you can do anything you set your mind to.” At the end of the day, the girl began to paint using her mouth.
Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill again. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, the little girl came in. But this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read, “Thank you for helping me walk.”

Here is a famous experiment in the book The Marshmallow Test. In 1972, Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 four-year-olds to six-year-olds.
