The Other Mrs.
by Mary Kubica (Park Row, $27)
“Full of Secrets in the latest terror-meets-family drama from the best selling author of The
Good Girl,” said Cogdill. A troubled couple and their children move from Chicago to an island
in Maine to attempt a fresh start, but trust among them is not enough even before a niece joins
the household and a murder puts the father’s honesty in doubt. The Other Mrs. “moves at a quick
pace, with believable and surprising twists and an unexpected ending.”
Sharks in the Time of saviors
by Kawai Strong Washburn (MCD, $27)
“Despite its unclear feeling of of sadness, this novel about Hawaii feels like a drop of
tropical sun,” said Jenny. It follows a native islander who is regarded as a potential savior by his
family and community after he falls from a boat at age 7 and is rescued by uncommonly gentle
sharks. As Nainoa and his family members take turns telling the story. “The author’s hoping for
the land and traditions of Hawaii is so strong you might catch his homesickness.”

But after a woman brings her family together for a journey, which she’s won by writing about a
long-ago story with Pablo Picasso, humor and an attention to detail carry the story. Through the
author’s involvement in many tricks, she “uncovers how family journeys are saved, over and
over again, by short period of moments of connection with celebrities.”
The Mountains Sing
by Nguyen Phan Que Mai(Workman,$27)
“The story of Vietnam is so much bigger than most Americans know,” said Diana Nelson
Jones. This “wonderful and vivid” novel by a Vietnamese poet follows a single family across
several decades of 20th-century occupation and civil war, but “the story is inspired by the
family’s extraordinary adjustment” and by the author’s writing skill. “The book is so destroying
in places as to be unbearable, but then the flow of the writing and the story brings you onto a
wave of hope.”

I’m A Nurse By Day But An Artist By Night
Hello everyone! My name is Joe Mari, I am a male nurse from the Philippines who is
working overseas, and sometimes, being away from your family and friends, you’ll mostly feel
lonely, bored, and homesick. So in my spare time I draw portraits of people using Faber Castell
classic coloured pencils, ballpoint pen, and pencil for black and white ones.
I started drawing and won my first inter-school competition when I was 5. By that time I
had no dreams of being an artist, as I thought it was all a ‘game’ and I was never serious about
art. I became a part of my school paper as a cartoonist until high school and then time passed and
I have forgotten about drawing. It went on to being just a hobby until I tried to get back at it
again two years ago. I watched YouTube videos every night, trying to figure out how to improve
my skills. Drawing people’s faces is a fascination for me, which is obviously displayed in my
works.
You’re probably wondering why I never took any courses related to art, and why I am a
nurse. You see, there is a fine line between your dreams and your passion. I took the medical
field in hopes of giving service to as many people as I can. I have always been fascinated by the
world of Science and by the world of Art at the same time.
My intention in sharing this story is not to compare, but rather to bring out whatever other
interests you may have inside you. Sure you may be working in front of a desk at day, but who
knows, maybe you also rock out with your band at night. With enough patience and
perseverance, nothing can prevent passion.
I hope I inspired you all with my story, so go on, get that paper and whatever tool you can
use to create art!

A. He wanted to contribute to medicine. B. He wanted to help more people.
C. He wanted to develop his interest in art. D. He wanted to encourage others.
27. Which of the following best describes the author
A. Ordinary and warm-hearted. B. Appealing and open-minded.
C. Humorous and well-educated D. Hard-working and strong-willed.

September usually marks the start of a new season—but what you call that season depends
on where you are and whom you ask.
高一英语试题 第- 4 -页(共 11 页)
In the UK, people will tell you it’s “autumn”. However, cross the Atlantic and you’ll find
that people use both “fall” and “autumn” interchangeably when referring to this time of year. In
the English language, the season has two widely accepted names. Why does it have to be so
confusing
According to Dictionary.com, “fall” isn’t a modern nickname (昵称) that followed the more
traditional “autumn”. The two terms were actually first recorded within a few hundred years of
each other.
Before either word appeared in the word list of English, the seasons separating the cold and
warm months didn’t have common names. The main thing people did during the pre-winter
period was gather and collect crops, so it was called “harvest” in Old English.
Then, in the 1600s, more and more people left their farmland and moved into cities.
Without farming, the term “harvest” became less useful to city dwellers (居民). Some English
speakers needed another name for the season. They knew leaves fell from trees during that
season, so people called the season “the fall of the leaf”, or “fall” for short. But at the end of the
1600s, autumn, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, was introduced in
England and overtook (超过) “fall” as the standard term for the harvesting season.
At the same time, British settlers were making their first long journey to North America.
They brought the words “fall” and “autumn” with them. Today, using both words to describe the
season is a uniquely American phenomenon.
28. Which can best describe the feeling when “fall” and “autumn” are used
A. Puzzling B. Interesting C. Shocking D. Inspiring
29. Why a new word “Fall” was created
A. A short name for autumn was wanted.
B. A normal name for the season was wanted.
C. A proper name to describe crops was needed.
D. A different name to replace harvest was needed.
30. What do we know about “Autumn”
A. It is a French word. B. Farmers like using it.
C. It means harvesting crops. D. It appears later than “fall”.
31. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Harvest and Fall B. Falling for Autumn
C. The Season of September D. Searching for the Origin

Let the kids sleep, said Scott Maxwell in the Orlando Sentinel. In the US, nearly 9 out of 10
high schools begin classes before 8:30 a.m., and 10 percent before 7:30, and buses pick up kids
more than an hour before dawn, forcing tired teens to get out of bed without enough sleep.
This early-bird schedule flies in the face of findings that 87 percent of America’s high
school students are short of sleep, and that high schools and middle schools should start no
earlier than 8:30 a.m. This is “hardly a trivial matter”, because research shows that teens who
don’t get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight and low in spirits and do poorly in
school.
There is no arguing the benefits of enough sleep, said the Los Angeles Times. However,
what is “less clear” is that forcing high schools and middle schools to start later is the path to
achieving the benefits. One study found that later start times might mean just an additional “15
minutes per night” of sleep. Another study found that teens got “significantly more sleep the first
year of a schedule change” but then started going to bed later by the second. And since the buses
that transport older kids also carry primary school students in most areas, adjusting high school
start times would require adjusting the start time of younger kids.
Since the AAP’s 2014 report, about every believable medical science organization has come
out in support of later start times. The Brookings Institution found that later school start times
were followed by “a significant increase” in test scores. Some New Jersey schools moved all
start times to 8:30 and found “reduced lateness, and teachers reported students were more ready
to learn.” The proof is in, and it leads to only one decision: “Start school later.”
32. What does the underlined expression “a trivial matter” refer to in Paragraph 2
A. Something impossible B. Something unimportant
C. Something necessary D. Something valuable
33. What can we learn from the third paragraph
A. The benefits of enough sleep is no so clear.
B. Primary schools start earlier than high schools.
C. Teens need less sleep when they are one year older.
D. 15 minutes’ more sleep per night is not enough for teens.
34. What improvement can be seen if students get enough sleep
A. Reduce more weight B. Go to school much earlier
C. Get better marks in the tests D. Be not in low spirits anymore
35. What suggestion may the author give to the government

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I met Bosco in the remote wilderness near Mount Robson. At the end of a long day of
backpacking, I had put up my tent beside a river and was preparing to catch supper. Then I
looked up, and there he was: an enormous black bear, slowly circling within 30 yards.
He wasn’t Bosco to me yet, and I viewed his presence with fear. However, I decided to go
about my fishing. The bear came along.
I’ve lived with wild creatures for 30 years, always respecting their first fear—fast
movements—so I let the bear see every slow move. Soon he was sitting less than five feet away,
interested in my activity. When I landed a fish I threw it to him lightly. He gulped (大口吞咽).
And then he moved closer and settled half his 225 kilograms next to me!
When darkness set in, I was still fishing for that bear, attracted as much by his gentle
manners as by his eagerness for fish. I began to think of him in a friendly way as Bosco, and I
didn’t mind when he followed me back to camp.
After supper, I build up the fire and sat on the sleeping bag. The moment I comfortably lay,
he walked over and sat down beside me. I rather enjoyed his warmth. I listened to the rain
beating on the tent in time with the steady, powerful heartbeat beneath his thick coat.
Then suddenly Bosco began licking (舔) my hands. Guessing what he wanted, I got him a
handful of salt. He excitedly licked until the last grain of salt was gone.
It is from the fish and salt I offered him that I received his trust, dependence and friendship.
During the night, he left and came to the sleeping bag several times. Each time he climbed
around and over me, but he never put his full weight down when he touched me.
The next day I set off again, Bosco followed me as my dog.

Long-distance Race was a Success
In order to enrich our campus life, a long-distance race was held in our school on December
9th, 2021.
Together with the students from twenty classes, I signed up for the race. We set out at 9 am
from the gate of our school, through a nearby Park, and finally returned to our school. The race
proved a success and to my happiness, I came in third place.
Through the race, we felt that not only did the event improve our physical and psychological
quality, but it also helped us build a positive attitude towards life.
第二节(满分 25分)Possible Version:
The next day I set off again, Bosco followed me as my dog. We walked together, over a hill,
down through a running river, up to the next mountain top, through thick trees and down a wide
valley. The joyful Bosco jogged and ran back and forth, digging worms or roots and smelling here
and there with curiosity. I used a system of fish and salt rewards now and then to teach the bear to
respond to the call “Bosco!” I even treated him to tasteful bee bread and hundreds of bees! Following
a rich day, we again had a warm sleep.
However, the bear was nowhere to be seen the next morning. I called “Bosco” again and again
as I searched around my tent, along the river and in the direction of his foot marks for the whole
morning. There was no response and no sign of his coming back. At noon, I cooked lunch with one
eye on the hillside. I was then seated for hours waiting for the familiar big figure. Eventually, I
admitted that Bosco had left without saying goodbye. I knew I would never again see big brother
Bosco. But he left behind a relationship I shall remember.

M: China’s three-child policy has come out. Do you want to have another child, Nora
W: I have no idea. I only have one child. My husband Anthony would like to have another
one, because he wants to make our son Zen less lonely. As for me, I’m hesitating whether to
ask Zen’s advice.
M: Why
W: Well, my son who will reach an adult age in five years is in his adolescence now. I think
his opinion should be respected or he may feel neglected. But Anthony thinks there is no need
to do so for it’ll spoil the child.
M: I agree with you. For a child at a critical stage, you should treat him like an adult. You know
our boss had her second child several years ago, but she still regrets neglecting the eldest
child’s opinion because her two children can’t get on well together.
W: I understand.
M: Or you can have a vote on the issue with your family if you really can’t decide.
W: I guess I should respect my son’s opinion and talk to him. Thanks, Leo.

M: Bella, you’ve been sneezing all morning. What’s the matter
W: I was taking a bath last night. Suddenly there was no hot water. Then I had to use cold
water. I felt my body was as cold as ice after that.
M: It’s troublesome to catch cold in winter. I haven’t had that for years because I keep swimming
in winter.
W: Really Does that help
M: I think so. I joined the Bronte Splashers Winter Swimming Club in Australia ten years ago. Since
then I’ve had a habit of swimming in winter.
W: Sounds good. In my hometown Moscow, there are many winter swimming clubs. But I
can’t swim.
M: Why Are you afraid of that
W: No, I have high blood pressure. It’s risky to swim in winter.
M: Oh, what a pity! I was going to invite you to go swimming with me. By the way, remember
to take some medicine as you have a bad cold.
W: OK, thank you.
Text 10
M: This is the story of two frogs. One frog was fat and the other was very thin. One day, while
searching for food, they accidentally jumped into a tank of milk. They couldn’t get out, as
the sides were too slippery, so they were just swimming around. The fat frog said to the thin
frog, “Brother frog, there’s no use paddling any longer. So we might as well give up.” The
thin frog replied, “Hold on brother. Keep paddling.” And they continued paddling for hours.
After a while, the fat frog said, “Brother frog, I’m becoming very tired now. I’m going to stop
paddling and drown. There’s no possible way out of here.” But the thin frog said, “Keep
trying. Something will happen.” Another couple of hours passed. The fat frog said, “There’s
no sense in doing it because we’re going to drown anyway. What’s the use ” And the fat frog
stopped. He gave up. Then he drowned in the milk. But the thin frog kept on paddling. Ten
minutes later, the thin frog felt something solid beneath his feet. He had stirred the milk into
butter and he hopped out of the tank.
