When I met and married a kind Japanese man in New York City, I thought he would learn a bit more English and that we would continue to live our lives there. But because of difficulties in life, we ended up living in Tokyo! I was the one who needed to learn Japanese quickly! There is no experience quite as lonely as living in a foreign country without knowing the language. Especially making friends and breaking that loneliness is the first goal to reach. Always an uphill climb!
I was a trained English language teacher, and while I lived abroad I did that work. And when we moved back to America I planned to continue it. The country had serious financial problems at the time. The position of English as a Second Language (ESL) in schools and refugee language programs was weakened. So I simply took a job in a department store, at its children's playroom. This store was near a big company that hired some of its workers from many other countries. Often preschoolers in my playroom could not speak a word of English, and would look so lost and lonely! My heart flew to them! We would play language games and they would teach their language to me.
Years later, when a small girl who came from South America had become fluent in English, she said to me, “Teacher, remember when I called you Maestra " Another child whose language was only Russian at first—and we built a robot from blocks and learned English words that way—would come years later and keep playing that same game!
These moments became my life compass, because north is that place where persons are different.

A draft law(法律草案)on preventing food waste to make sure of food safety was given for its first reading to the session(会议) of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress(NPC全国人大常委会), held from Dec. 22 to 26, 2020.
The draft law says that restaurants should remind customers not to order too much. The size of each dish should be explained clearly and a smaller size should be available. If customers leave too much food, restaurants are allowed to ask them to pay for food waste.
Food waste has been a problem across the world. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, about one third of the world's food—1. 3 billion tons—is wasted every year. In China alone, 35 million tons of food ends up in land fills every year, with about 12% of the nation's harvests going to waste.
The draft law is an important move to encourage a saving attitude toward food. It is expected to provide a long-term legal system of better rules on daily eating and food consumption, according to China Daily.

China will cut the number of climbers trying to climb Mount Qomolangma from the north as part of plans for the clean-up on the world’s highest mountain. The clean-up activity will include moving away the bodies of climbers who died at more than 8,000 meters up the mountain.
The total number of climbers trying to reach the top of the world's highest mountain from the north will be controlled to less than 300. The climbing season will be controlled to spring.
Parts of Qomolangma are in China and Nepal. Each year, around 60, 000 climbers and guides visit the Chinese north side of the mountain, but few actually try to climb it. China has set up stations to sort, recycle and break down rubbish from the mountain, which includes cans, plastic bags, tents and oxygen tanks. On the Nepalese side, mountaineering trip organizers have begun sending huge rubbish bags to climbers during the spring climbing season. They should collect rubbish that then can be carried by helicopters back to the base camp.
Every year there are many victims on Qomolangma often in the "death area" above 8,000 meters, where the air is the thinnest. In 2017, 648 people reached the top of Qomolangma. Six people died on the mountain that year, one of them on the north side.
