Jaguars(美洲虎) are the largest cat in North and South America. They can be found in many areas from south of Mexico to Argentina. But the loss of forests and the growth of cities have disturbed more than half of the cats’ main habitat, forcing them into living in small groups in different places.
People used to focus on protecting these habitats. But biologists realise now that young jaguars move from one place to another in their hunt for mates and food. They may travel up to 500 miles through the edges of villages or cities. It is a dangerous journey.
Scientist Alan Rabinowitz is president of an organisation devoted to saving wild cats. One day, while studying a map of all the known areas jaguars live in,Rabinowitz decided to play a game of connecting the dots(点).He drew a line between one area and another area.Suddenly he thought of an idea that could help save this threatened species.
Rabinowitz realised that protecting the pathways was just as important as protecting the habitats themselves. He began an international project called “Path of the Jaguar” to check these pathways and make sure they won’t become dead ends.Things such as factories, highways and dams will stop the jaguar in its tracks, forcing it off course.
Rabinowitz’s project works to persuade countries to limit industrial development that would block jaguars’ pathways. These protected areas are not always connected. But these cats are smart—they run across open land in the dark.If they find a jungle with something to eat, they’ll stop to rest, just as you might pull over at a restaurant during a family road trip.

Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history.
Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way.Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the world forever.Hundreds more are on the danger list today.About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.
Animals are more than beautiful or interesting or a source of food.Every animal has its place in the balance of nature.Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems.
For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks(鹰),the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by mice. Why Because hawks eat mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the mice multiplied quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.
Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animals or plants on the danger list.Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

The loneliest chimpanzee(黑猩猩) in the world just got the best surprise—a hug from a new friend.Ponso has been by himself for about four years, finding himself alone after his wife and children died on the island where they were abandoned by a medical testing company many years ago.
For years a nearby villager named Germain has been Ponso’s only company, visiting him so often to bring bananas and bread—the chimpanzee’s only source of food on the tiny island. It was clear how much Ponso missed companionship when he was recently visited by Chimpanzee Conservation Centre Director Estelle Raballand. The chimpanzee immediately embraced Estelle Raballand in a huge hug and laughed as she reached out for him, with his smile from ear to ear.
For those who know Ponso’s backstory, his immediate ease and trust in humans might be surprising.Ponso was one of 20 chimpanzees, all between the ages of 7 to 11 years old, relocated to an island off the Ivory Coast after being used for testing by the New York Blood Centre. After the tests were completed in 2005,the lab reportedly transferred the chimpanzees to a string of islands, occasionally dropping off food and water because there was none in the chimpanzees’ new homes.
Disease and hunger soon left only Ponso, his mate and their two children standing. But at the end of 2013 they died within days of each other and Ponso was now completely alone.
A group called SOS PONSO is trying to raise money for the poor lonely chimpanzee, already achieving its goal of $20,000—all of which will be used for Ponso’s care.

B.Why Ponso was used for a test.
C.How Ponso came to the island.
D.The medical test about chimpanzees.
31.What can be inferred from the text
A.Many people show concern for Ponso.
B.A new lab will be built on the island.
C.Germain won’t visit Ponso any more.
D.More chimps will be brought to the island.
D
The great success of Finding Dory is being met with mixed feelings by experts. That’s because though the movie can draw attention to our weak coral reefs(珊瑚礁)that need protection,it may lead to further damage to life at sea.
After the movie Finding Nemo came out in 2003,the clownfish(小丑鱼)became popular with every kid in America. As a result, the number of clownfish in the wild greatly dropped.Blue tangs(蓝吊鱼)also became popular pets because of the movie.Sadly, most blue tangs are caught with the help of cyanide(氰化物).
Cyanide works on the fish, allowing them to be easily caught and sold to pet stores.Cyanide is harmful to humans. It also harms coral and other life at sea.Even the fish that are caught by using cyanide are harmed. Many end up dying within months of being brought to the store.
It is not allowed to sell fish that have been caught using cyanide in the US.However,a 2008 study discovered that up to 90% of the 11 million pet fish brought into the country each year have been caught using this harmful fishing method.More recently, two researchers Craig Downs and Rene Umberger did a study to test if the fish sold in US pet stores had been harmed by cyanide. They found that of the 100 fish bought from stores in California,Hawaii,Maryland,North Carolina, and Virginia, over half, including the blue tangs, had cyanide in their body.
To help people make better decisions when looking for fish for their kids, the researchers made a free mobile app, called Tank Watch—the app helps people to know whether a fish has been caught using illegal fishing methods.
The World Wildlife Foundation is asking fans of the movie not to “Find” Dory, but to “Protect” the beautiful fish! This means not rushing out and buying a blue tang after watching the film.As Ellen Degeneres, voice actress for Dory, says, the movie is not about “Finding” Dory, but about “putting it back to the ocean”.
32.What makes experts worried after the movie Finding Dory came out
A.That people may not like it.
B.That the clownfish will disappear.
C.That people may rush out to buy a“Dory”.
D.That coral reefs may not draw any attention.
33.What do the two studies mentioned in paragraph 4 tell us
A.It’s very hard to catch pet fish at sea.
B.Blue tangs are very popular in the US.
C.Cyanide is not allowed to use in the US.
D.Many pet fish in the US are caught by using cyanide.
34.Tank Watch would most probably be used by people who want to .

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother.Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat,but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her.She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle—aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked,“Hey,girl, you want to have the noodles ”
“Oh,yes...but I don’t have money on me...” she replied.
“That’s nothing.I’ll treat you today,” said the man,“come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating,Jenny cried silently.
“What is it ” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears.“Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me.She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled,“Girl,do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her ”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock;she remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered hands.“Why did I not think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home,Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.
Approaching the doorway,Jenny took a deep breath. _______________________________
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. __________________________________参考答案
A
根据第一段中的“But the loss of forests and the growth of cities have disturbed more than half of the cats’ main habitat, forcing them into living in small groups in different places.”

根据最后一段中的“A group called SOS PONSO is trying to raise money for the poor lonely chimpanzee...” 故选A项。
D
根据第四段中的“...up to 90% of the 11 million pet fish...have been caught using this harmful fishing method.”以及“They found that of the 100 fish bought from stores...over half...had cyanide in their body.”
根据倒数第二段中的“To help...the researchers made a free mobile, app, called Tank Watch—the app helps people to know whether a fish has been caught using illegal fishing methods.”
根据最后一段中的“...says,the movie is not about ‘Finding’ Dory, but about ‘putting it back to the ocean’.” 故选A项。

第一节
Dear Sir/Madam,
I think Picture No.18 is the best choice for this year’s World Animal Day.In the picture we can see a bear and a hunter are on the seesaw. The hunter is aiming at the fearful bear.He is ready to shoot.Actually,if the hunter really shoots, not only the bear but the hunter will also fall down, hurting himself.
From the picture we can clearly see that both animals and human beings are in the same boat.If animals are destroyed,so are the human beings. On the contrary,if human beings and animals can live harmoniously,we will enjoy a peaceful world.
The picture is very simple, but the story is shocking. The message is instructive.Once seen,it can never be easily forgotten. It can arouse the public’s awareness of animal protection.
Thank you for your patience to read my letter.Hope you can choose the picture for this year’s World Animal Day.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother.“Here you come!I’ve been looking for you,” she said, tired and relieved.Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms.“Mum,I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude.Hearing this, her mother smiled patting her back gently.
