Thousands of German students are accusing (指责) school officials of creating an English exam that was “unfairly” difficult. The exam is important because it is part of Germany's Abitur system. The Abitur test is given to students who are completing high school and preparing to enter college.
More than 35,000 people have signed a petition (请愿书) to voice their concerns about the test. The students say the English part of the year's Abitur is clearly more difficult than tests given in recent years. They are calling on school officials to consider their opinions while they give test results.
The exam is designed to test students' understanding and skill level in English. Part of the test requires students to read examples of English writing and then answer questions to see how much they understand. The petition says some of the English examples are very difficult to understand, even for students who usually do well in English classes. It says some examples were written a long time ago and had old words.
One of the most difficult examples is a description of New York City's Statue of Liberty. Students say it has too many “unknown words” and “symbolic meanings”, making it difficult to understand. Even some native English speakers pointed out on social media that they would have difficulties with the writing in the example too. A British Twitter user living in Frankfurt, Germany said, “I'm a native English speaker and ‘roweling’ is a new word to me, too.”
However, school officials said they had carried out a full review of the exam and decided it was “proper” for students.
5.Why do the German students accuse school officials
A.Their English exam was too difficult.
B.There were mistakes in an English exam.
C.Germany's Abitur system was unfair.
D.Unfair rules were made for them.
6.What do the students want school officials to do
A.Give them another exam.
B.Treat their petition seriously.
C.Explain to them about the exam.
D.Change Germany's Abitur system.
7.What is the problem with the description of New York City's Statue of Liberty in the exam
A.It is too long.
B.It is boring to read.
C.It has many questions.
D.It has many rarely used words.
8.What would be the best title for the text
A.German students fight against an unfair English exam
B.German students did poorly in an English exam
C.German educational system needs a change
D.English is difficult for German students

You can deal with winter in two ways: Escape it or embrace it. Watching people dive into snow — in nothing but bathing suits and boots — I'm guessing these people choose to do the latter.
The seasonal madness is part of the Quebec Winter Carnival, now in its 62nd year, said to be the world's largest winter festival. About a half million people each year come to Quebec City to delight in frigid (寒冷的) fashion.
“We embrace winter,” said Paule Bergeron of Quebec City Tourism.“It's time to play.” The carnival runs from Jan. 29 to Feb. 14, with dozens of events. I went last year for a few frigid days, staying at the Hilton Quebec, in the thick of the downtown action. Families are a big part of the carnival. What attract kids are things like ice fishing at a man made pond stocked with fish, where if you catch something, you can pay to have it smoked and eat it, or donate it to a food bank.
It's a good chance to experience the culture of this European feeling city, and nowhere is more evident than in Bonhomme, the carnival's goodwill ambassador, a living avatar (化身) in the form of a giant snowman with a human inside gliding (滑行) around the festivities.
There are two night parades at the carnival. I attended the second one last year, the night before the carnival's close. The streets were lined with thousands of people in a gentle snow and bitter cold, watching local dancers and school groups glide by. In the end, Bonhomme's float came into view, and kids in the crowd went crazy. As the parade ended, thousands followed behind it, becoming part of the Quebec Winter Carnival's magic and madness. And with a cup of milk in my hand, I realized that for once, not only did I not mind winter, I embraced it.
9.We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.
A.kids love to see Bonhomme
B.the carnival ends with two parades
C.the parades are the maddest part of the carnival
D.people attend the parades mainly to see Bonhomme
10.The author attended the carnival probably as ________.
A.a visitor to Quebec B.a festival performer
C.an official in Quebec D.a local newspaper reporter
11.Which of the following is TRUE about the Quebec Winter Carnival
A.It is held to attract visitors.
B.It has a history of less than 60 years.
C.It is mainly intended to entertain kids.
D.It is the largest winter festival in the world.
12.Who is Bonhomme
A.It is a giant snowman.
B.It is a famous star in Quebec.
C.It is the goodwill ambassador of the carnival.
D.It is the organizer of the Quebec Winter Carnival.

History of Mother's Day
In the US Mother's Day is a holiday celebrated on the second Sunday in May.It is a day when children honor their mothers with cards, gifts, and flowers. The first observance (庆祝) of Mother's Day in Philadelphia in 1907 is based on suggestions by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 and by Ana Jarvis in 1907.
Although it wasn't celebrated in the US until 1907,there were days honoring mothers even in the days of ancient Greece. In those days, however, it was Rhea, the Mother of the gods, that was given honor.
Later, in the 1600s, in England there was an annual (年度的) observance called “Mothering Sunday”.It was celebrated during June, on the fourth Sunday. On Mothering Sunday, the servants, who generally lived with their employers, were encouraged to return home and honor their mothers. It was traditional for them to bring a special cake along to celebrate the occasion.
In the US, in 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign (运动) to establish a national Mother's Day.Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday in May.The next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.
Jarvis and others began a letter writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians asking to establish a national Mother's Day.They were successful.President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday in May.
Many other countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different time throughout the year.Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, as in the US.
Questions:
13.When is Mother's Day celebrated in the US
14.On Mother's Day, what did the servants do to honor their mothers
15.Do the countries all over the world celebrate their own Mother's Day on the same day

Caleb's fingers slowly moved over the piano keys (钢琴键) as he searched for the next note. He'd only been taking lessons for a few weeks, and playing the piano was harder than it looked. This one, he thought as he pressed (按) a white key. Wrong! He tried again. Oh, this one, he thought, pressing another key. Right!
“That song is challenging,” said Mrs. Lee, his piano teacher, when he finished playing. “But it sounds much_better than it did last week! I can tell you've been practicing really hard. I think you can take a trip to the treasure_chest (百宝箱).”
The treasure chest! Caleb's eyes turned to the big golden box in the corner of the room. It was filled with candy and other fun prizes. This would be Caleb's first trip to the treasure chest.
As Mrs. Lee started to teach her next student, Caleb searched through the treasure chest. Should he take the dog stickers, or the orange gum Then he saw it — a green folder (文件夹). It was his favorite color, and he could use it to carry his drawings. He reached for it. But then he saw the fruit snacks. They were strawberry, his favorite flavor. That would be a great prize too.
Folder_or_fruit_snacks He could not decide which choice was better. Caleb knew his_mom would be there soon to pick him up, but he still couldn't decide what to pick. The folder would be perfect for his drawings, but he could almost taste the fruit snacks.
His hand moved between the two prizes as he tried to make up his mind. Then Caleb had another thought. Maybe he could take both.Mrs. Lee had so many prizes in the treasure chest that she would never notice. It wouldn't even be stealing only if he wouldn't take anything next time. That would be OK, wouldn't it
Caleb looked at Mrs. Lee. She was busy helping her student. Quietly Caleb put the fruit snacks and the folder into his bag and went out of the room.

【应用文】
Dear Li Lan,
Nowadays, Western festivals become more and more popular in China, especially among us college students.
Some regard it a precious opportunity for the Chinese to learn more about Western cultures. On the other hand, more and more Chinese people view it oppositely. Since more and more young people have lost their interest in our traditional festivals, such as Mid Autumn Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and even Spring Festival. They seem to be more willing to celebrate Christmas.
In my opinion, we should preserve the traditional Chinese culture as well as welcome Western ones. We students undertake the responsibility to carry on our traditions, therefore, we have to respect them and cherish them.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
But Caleb felt he did something wrong after a while. When he left Mrs. Lee's piano room, he didn't feel good. By the time he reached her front door, he felt worse. He knew he did not feel good because of the bad choice he had made. He looked at the prizes. His problem wasn't folder_or_fruit_snacks anymore. It was choosing the right or choosing the wrong Caleb knew what he had to do.
Paragraph 2:
Then he saw a car coming to him. That must be his mom's car. He opened the front door and waved to his_mom. “Just a minute!”he called. He took out the green folder from his bag and went back to Mrs. Lee's piano room. Apologizing for his stealing was hard, but he felt much better. Honesty turned out to be the best prize of all. He felt happy because he finally made a good choice by being honest.
