My 10th Christmas was the one that I was not looking forward to. Money was limited. Mom said we were old enough now not to expect ___13___.
“How can I even wear the same old dress one more time ” I ___14___ to my sister. “I know,” said my sister. “I have asked for a horse forever but it never happens.”
The next day, Mom told us that she had been saving up and shopping around so that we could give the Walters family a Christmas basket. “If anyone needs some ___15___, it’s the Walters,” Mom reminded us. Looking like a family of hobos ( 流 浪 汉 ), the Walters could hardly afford their food.
I noticed that Mom had prepared a small gift for each of the children. How could Mom be so generous (慷慨的) with someone else’s kids when we didn’t have enough
We ___16___ the basket to the Walters’, knocked hard on the door and then ran fast to hide behind a tree. When the family came out and picked up the basket, I saw their faces. They looked happy. But mostly, they looked like, well, like they were thinking, maybe we do belong here.
Christmas morning arrived. ___17___, I received a beautiful dress and my sister got a horse!
“Mom, how did you manage to do all this ” I asked. “We were ___18___ for a no-present Christmas.” “Oh, everybody helped. Mrs. Olsen at the dress shop sold me your gift at half price. Mrs. Marshall paid me to hang up her tree lights. Mr. Jones gave us one of his horses because we got your sister to love it. And the Larsens, down the way, ___19___ some of their pasture (牧场) for us to keep the horse.”
“But the Walters don’t have anything to give in return.”
“Doesn’t matter who can or can’t give. If we just listen to our hearts, the right gifts will end up with the right families,” Mom said.
That was the Christmas that I learned about the magic of ___20___. The “belonging” feeling was more valuable than any of the gifts. And I thought families that care, care about families. All families.

How school plays make a difference
Everyone remembers their first time on stage. The school play is the first time most of us experience doing drama. It's the first chance to both test your acting skills and build up your self-confidence.
Although I have been deeply interested in acting from a very young age, I haven't got a ___13___ to actually act on stage. That's why I was so nervous for the play Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in my first year of school. After studying all the characters in the play, I chose Veruca Salt. Disappointingly, I only got a ___14___ with no lines. I didn't say a word at all. However, this was my first performance on stage, I still remember the feelings I had when the lights went down and I noticed that many people were there to watch.
After that, I decided to ___15___ any difficulty next time. I did well in reading aloud in class and I knew I had to take good advantage of that. So when the chance of the play Pinnochio came, I made up my mind to be the narrator (旁白). As I stood in front of the teachers, I was so ___16___ again when I realized I was the only girl going for the part. But after the boys before me couldn't finish their lines, it was my time to get right. I stepped forward, took a deep breath and went for it. I did it! I will never ___17___ the moment I stood in the bright light with everyone's attention. I even remember the beautiful dress my mom made me to ___18___ while narrating. Black with heavy gold thread (线) running through it, it made me look super and smart.
Recently, I watched the play The Snow White at the National Theatre. The joy on the faces of the little actors and actresses was ___19___. For those young students who act in school plays, they build up strong confidence, a great power of learning and even a beautiful dream to be a real actor or actress in the future.
That's why the black and gold ___20___ still hangs in my old bedroom. And I have to be honest—it did look great in the light.
