Raising just one child can be a tough job for any parent, which is why this woman is being honored for taking in more than 600 children over the course of five decades. 75-year-old Linda Herring from Johnson County, Iowa has been tirelessly providing food, clothing, love and medical care for hundreds of adopted kids since the 1970s.
When Herring first began adopting kids, she was also running a home daycare and working as a night custodian(监护人)in a local high school. Additionally, she volunteered as a first responder for 50 years of her life.
Out of the hundreds of adopted kids that Herring has taken under her wing, many of them experienced a range of medical conditions and special needs—but that never prevented Herring. Linda mostly adopted young children and children with special medical needs and kept boxes of clothes in her garage, piled to the ceiling, labeled by size and gender. No one had to worry about a child going without clothes at Linda's, even if they arrived with nothing but what they were wearing.
Anthony Herring, who was just 3 years old when he was adopted into Linda's family, described his mother like this: “It's hard to say in words her impact. She is always available and ready for a child in need.” These kids were usually taken from a traumatic(令人痛苦的)situation and she'd take them in, providing a warm bed, clean clothes, warm meals, and love. She also worked hard to keep families together and help biological parents make the changes needed to be able to keep their children. She always made sure a new child in her home was given a professional photograph that was placed on the wall in the living room. “That seems like a small thing, but it helps them feel like they're at home.”
4.Why is Linda Herring respected by people
A.She is fond of her easy work.
B.She has children in her care.
C.She likes to play with children.
D.She provides food for children.
5.Which of the following has the similar meaning with the underlined phrase“taken under her wing”

B.Looked after.
C.Provided food for.
D.Provided education for.
6.What do you think of Linda Herring according to Anthony Herring
A.Influential and kind.
B.Generous and optimistic.
C.Intelligent and hard-working.
D.Easy-going and warm-hearted.
7.How did Linda Herring help the adopted children feel at home
A.She gave her children good jobs.
B.She took photos of each of them to enjoy.
C.She offered each of them a professional photograph.
D.She met their needs to make many changes in their life.

Suppose you become a leader in an organization. You are likely to have volunteers help with the organization's activities. To do so, it should help to understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work.
Let's begin with why people volunteer. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate.
People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can shift people's wish of participation from an internal factor (e.g. “I volunteer because it's important to me”) to an external factor (e.g. “I volunteer because I'm required to do so”). When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must.
Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to remain in their positions over time To answer this question, researchers have conducted follow-up studies where they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice. The researchers note that attention should be given to “the training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they experience”.
Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role. Those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work. Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering in hospital is an important part of who I am.” Consistent with the researchers' expectations, they found a positive correlation(正相关)between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results lead to concrete advice: “Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity. Items like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity.”
8.People tend to volunteer mainly because of .
A.academic requirements
B.spiritual rewards
C.social expectations
D.inner motivations
9.What can we learn from the study in Florida
A.Strategy training is a must in research.
B.Volunteers should get mentally prepared.
C.Follow-up studies should last for one year.
D.Volunteers are provided with concrete advice.
10.What is most likely to motivate volunteers to continue their work
A.Role identity as a volunteer.
B.Individual differences in role identity.
C.Practical suggestions from researchers.
D.Publicly recognizable volunteer T-shirts.
11.What is the best title of the passage
A.How to Get People to Volunteer
B.How to Maintain Volunteers' Interest
C.How to Organize Volunteer Activities
D.How to Conduct Volunteers' Behaviors

October sixteenth is World Food Day. This day is also the anniversary of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(F.A.O.). The UN agency leads international efforts to defeat world hunger. It was created in 1945.
The F.A.O. says more than one hundred and fifty countries are to hold special events to celebrate World Food Day. At F.A.O. headquarters in Rome, for example, runners will compete in a five-kilometer race through the city's historical area. Events in other countries include discussions among experts, press conferences and musical programs.
The message of this year's World Food Day is “investing in agriculture for food security”. The F.A.O. says, “During the early 1990s, the foreign aid for agriculture was nine thousand million dollars each year. But now, it has declined to less than five thousand million dollars a year.” Yet, the F.A.O. estimates that more than eight hundred and fifty million people around the world do not get enough food.
The UN agency notes that seventy percent of the world's hunger lies in the farmers who grow small amount of food. Many also face problems of feeding themselves. The F.A.O. says agricultural aid could help small farmers make a profit from their crops. Farmers would also be able to feed their families throughout the year and reinvest in their farms. They could buy better seeds, equipment and chemical fertilizers to help their crops grow.
Muhammad Yunus, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to improve the lives of poor people, as well as his Bangladesh microfinance organization, the Grameen Bank, has lent small amount of money to poor people who are unable to get traditional loans, especially women. Minister Yunus says that he plans to give his share of the one million three hundred thousand dollars Nobel award to good causes. He says he wants to establish an eye hospital and start a project to produce low-cost food for the poor.

B.The foreign aid for agriculture has reduced by nearly 50% in recent decades.

D.Yunus will donate the entire Nobel award to help solve the hunger for the poor.
14.With agricultural aid, farmers can .
A.promote the production of crops

This 41 (be) my first time to live abroad in a different culture, simply getting used to the living conditions was 42 big adjustment. I had no electricity, running water, phone or the Internet. Imagine no air conditioning at a place 43 the temperature often goes beyond 38 degrees Celsius! Some days it was just too hot to move.
However, I could end each day with a 44 (glory) African sunset. And at night, I had a good view of the Milky Way. Before Namibia, I never thought I would survive in such an environment. My experience awakened me to not only the limitations 45 (place) on ourselves, but also our amazing ability to adapt. With busy life, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, volunteering brings you lots of benefits. The more you volunteer, the more benefits you will gain. Of course, volunteering does not have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy days.Giving in simple ways can not only help those in need but also improve your health and happiness.
One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is that it allows you to connect to your community, make it a better place and boast your social skills. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people, animals and organizations in need. And volunteering is a two-way street: It can benefit you and your family as much as the others you choose to help.
Volunteering provides many benefits for both mental and physical health.Almost everyone has to fight against stress, anger and anxiety. The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being. Nothing relieves stress better than a meaningful connection to another person. Working with animals has also been shown to improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety.
Volunteering can also advance your career. If you are considering a new career, volunteering can help you get experience in your area of interest and meet people in the field. Even if you are not planning on changing careers, volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice important skills used in the workplace, such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, project planning, task management and organization. You might feel more comfortable stretching your wings at work once you have developed these skills in a volunteer position first.

根据Horizon School Peru中的“We provide free English classes for the nearby area”可知,在这个志愿组织中,志愿者需要为附近地区提供免费的英语课程。
根据Adventist Nepal中的“with the purpose of providing volunteer service in Nepal in the field of education, health”可知,Adventist Nepal的目的是在尼泊尔提供教育、健康等领域的义务性服务。
根据Horizon School Peru中的“Please get in touch with us at contact@.”、Do-it.org.uk中的“look through the chances and apply online”、Aim Abroad中的“For more information, please visit www.aimabroad.org.”和Adventist Nepal中的“please feel free to get in touch with us at info@adventistnepal.org.”
根据第二段画线短语后的“many of them experienced a range of medical conditions and special needs—but that never prevented Herring”(他们中的许多人遭受了一系列的疾病和特殊需求,但这并没有阻止Herring)可以推知,Herring给予了收养的孩子们很多的照顾。
故选A。
For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships.
Those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work. 故选A。
A“How to Get People to Volunteer”(如何让人们去做志愿者)贴合主题。故选A。
D
During the early 1990s, the foreign aid for agriculture was nine thousand million dollars each year. But now, it has declined to less than five thousand million dollars a year.(在20世纪90年代早期,对农业的外援每年为90亿美元。
They could buy better seeds, equipment and chemical fertilizers to help their crops grow.(他们可以购买更好的种子、设备和化肥来帮助他们的作物生长)可知,如果给农业的救助资金充足,农民就有资金购买更好的种子、设备和化肥,从而改善农业生产状况,增加庄稼的产量。故选A。
The UN agency leads international efforts to defeat world hunger.(这个联合国机构领导战胜世界饥饿的国际努力)可知,F.A.O.

Think about being late for your work:your boss, co-workers and customers would be upset. The same applies to volunteering. such a thing指being late,故选C。
If you become bored, it may be time for a schedule change in your life.(如果你觉得无聊了,可能是时候改变一下你生活中的日程安排了)及下文It is volunteering, so you aren't stuck in one place.(这是志愿活动,所以你不会被困在一个地方)可知G项(换一天做志愿者,或者寻求不同的任务,看看那里还有没有其他的机会)符合语境。

故填was sent。
故填of。
故填being。
