When school started on that warm August day, I threw myself into everything I did, including playing volleyball. I decided to become beautiful, or at the very least, thin. I stopped eating completely. Soon I began losing weight, which excited me, and I even grew to love the tiredness and light-headedness (头晕) that came with my poor diet, for those feelings meant that I was winning.
As the season went on, things became tense between my head volleyball coach, Coach Smith, and me. She felt that something was wrong with my health. She talked with me about my eating and was
3/共 9 页
angry that I wouldn't listen to her when she tried to make me eat. She tried to persuade me in a determined way and so we fought(争执) constantly. Then my hunger started to affect my performance. I was so tired that practice was becoming a struggle. One afternoon, with hurt in her eyes, Coach Smith asked me what I had eaten and I told her nothing yet. She looked at me, disappointment in her eyes, knowing she couldn't make me stop, and walked away.
A couple of weeks later, I attended a formal dinner for our volleyball team. I stood there as my coach said something nice about me. I realized then that I had ruined my senior year by being disrespectful, and that I had probably ruined hers as well. So that evening I wrote her a letter apologizing to and thanking her.
Then one Saturday, as I was reading in the library, I felt someone gently take my arm and say softly, “Lynn Jones, how are you doing ” I looked up and saw the familiar face. “Thanks for the letter,” she said. “It meant a lot. ”
When I think of a coach, I think of someone above me, someone who gives instruction ---not a friend. But Coach Smith is different, and, like any other good friends, she dealt with my problem in a determined way even when I hated her for it at that time. I didn’t deserve her kindness, but she gave it anyway. I will forever be grateful for her help, and now for her friendship.
24. How did the author feel when she had a poor diet with a sense of tiredness
A. Awkward. B. Proud. C. Anxious. D. Annoyed.
25. Why did the author fight with Coach Smith
A. She refused to go on a diet. B. She caused failure of her team.
C. She changed the training course. D. She stuck to losing weight.
26. What’s the author’s purpose of writing a letter to Coach Smith
A. To quit the volleyball team. B. To improve her performance.
C. To say sorry and express her thanks. D. To build a close relationship with the coach.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. An Unexpected Friendship B. A Fight with My Coach
C. A Strict Volleyball Coach D. My Way of Losing Weight

Most people are hoping the recent stranding ( 搁浅) of the 1,300-foot, 220,000-ton Ever Given container ship (集装箱货运船) in the Suez Canal was a one-off---just a case of a very big ship getting stuck in a narrow waterway. However, more than 100 ships of similar size are passing through the world’s waterways, and even bigger ones are being built.
Capt Andrew Kinsey, a senior marine-risk consultant ( 海 洋 风 险 顾 问 ) for a global financial services firm, says with heavy weather in the North Pacific Ocean over the past year, a lot of containers are going overboard ( 落水). Part of the problem is the way the ultra-large ships handle at sea with towering stacks (堆叠) of containers, especially in strong winds.
Alan Murphy, chief executive of a container-shipping research and advisory firm in Copenhagen,
4/共 9 页
Denmark, says it’s difficult to know whether there has been an increase in the number of containers going overboard or if trans-Pacific container losses over the past year have just received more attention. In a November report, the World Shipping Council found the number of such incidents to be falling in recent years, although the report does not cover 2020. There is no central database for reporting container losses, so it’s not known exactly how many containers fall overboard, Murphy says.
Murphy says container ships are often fully loaded nowadays, as demand for consumer products has jumped during the Corona Virus pandemic. “In the past, these huge ships have never really sailed as fully loaded as they are now,” he says. “Obviously, the more the ship carries, the greater the risk of an incident happening.”
“The stranding of Ever Given in the Suez Canal is a warning,” Kinsey says. “We’ve been bringing up the issue of size in our yearly safety and shipping review and in papers for over five years. ”
Carrying more containers needs bigger and wider ships, which means it is harder for them to sail through narrow waterways like the Suez Canal and move when they get stuck.
28. What can we imply from paragraph 1
A. It might be a tough task to build bigger ships.
B. Costs of overseas shipments might rise sharply.
C. There might be changes in the world’s waterways.
D. More accidents like the recent stranding might happen.
29. What did the World Shipping Council find in the November report
A. No database for reporting container losses had been created.
B. Trans-Pacific container losses had received more attention.
C. The number of container losses had dropped in recent years before 2020.
D . More container losses happened in 2020 than in the past few years.
30. What leads to fully loaded container ships nowadays according to Murphy
A. The extreme weather. B. The increasing size of ships
C. The slow transportation. D. The growing demand for consumer goods.
31. What do Kinsey’s words in the 5th paragraph show
A. Warnings about the risks of stranding are given yearly.
B. Concern about larger ships has been voiced for some time.
C. Some container ships can carry as many goods as Ever Given.
D. Ships bigger than Ever Given won’t be allowed through the Suez Canal.

Everyday wear like casual shirts, T-shirts, and jackets, embroidered ( 刺 绣 ) with traditional patterns( 图案) from the Yi ethnic group, staged a striking show at recent New York Fashion Week, which took place on September 4th. Chinese designer Wang Ta’s new youth collection, decorated with Yi embroidery, a Chinese intangible cultural heritage, was a definite hit on the last night of the fashion week.
5/共 9 页
The audience was amazed by both the beautiful and mostly hand-embroidered colorful patterns and the perfect balance of modern and traditional elements. Leah Coulter, a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, who dressed the models for the show, said the collection was a mix of old and new and loved all the patterns and embroidery, which aroused her interest in the unique handicraft dating back thousands of years. “I need to learn more about its history,” Coulter said.
It’s not something new in the fashion world to involve China’s intangible cultural heritages as elements of design, Wang said, but it’s not easy to make them into true fashion. “Intangible cultural heritages should not always be displayed in museums or only appear on souvenirs. I hope to break the stereotype through using the Yi embroidery and make them everyday, fashionable items,” Wang told the media after the show. “I think fashion is the best way to introduce culture” .
Wang’s design ideas can be traced back to both her global experience as a fashion designer in Japan, the UK and China, and her unique educational background. Before receiving her second degree in fashion from Japan’s top fashion institute Tokyo Mode Gakuen, she majored in history at East China Normal University in Shanghai.
In order to create her collection, Wang and her team went to Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture ( 自 治 州 )in southwest China’s Yunnan Province and deeply studied the culture and history of Yi’s craftsmanship to gain insight into the essence, delicacy and symbolism of Yi embroidery. But Wang’s employing the patterns, colors and techniques of Yi embroidery in her contemporary fashion designs is not a simple imitation. The combination of modern and traditional parts can’t be too striking for it to be widely accepted as everyday wear, Wang said, adding that her goal is for people, regardless of gender, color or nationality, to like her designs.
32. What made Wang Ta’s design appealing to the audience
A. The delicate handmade costumes in Yi culture.
B. The striking design of Chinese intangible cultural heritage.
C. The brilliant combination of traditional and modern parts.
D. The diversity of ethnic cultures displayed in the youth clothes.
33. What does the underlined word “stereotype” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. fixed impression B. unique style
C. commercial trend D. controversial(有争议的) type
34. Which of the following contributes to Wang’s design ideas
A. Her fashion educational background only at home.
B. Her travelling experiences across ethnic regions in Yunnan Province.
C. Her working experiences in some European and Asian countries.
D. Her goal to be famous worldwide.
35. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The embroidery can be traced back to thousands of years ago.
B. China’s Ethnic Elements have been applied to Fashion.
C. Wang Ta, a talented designer, created a collection of Yi embroideries.
6/共 9 页
D. China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage has drawn more attention.

Four Ways to Be a Great Roommate
Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst.36 .Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.
Talk things munication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I've seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs.37.
Don't expect to be best friends. Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet.38. And if your roommate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry.
Ask before you take. This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first.39.
Clean up after yourself. This should do without saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I've come across in college are messy.40. But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.
A .So you need to think twice before you help your roommates out.
B .This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappiness.
C .Even ifyou both agree to share everything, you should still ask.
D .You don't have all the time to clean your room and keep it organized.
E. It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your roommate.
F. Sometime you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.
G. Remember, you're trying to make a new friend, not to scare your roommate away.
