第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Being a polite airline passenger starts with just a few easy steps.
Help your fellow traveler
While you’re loading your carry on bag into the overhead space, offer to lift a fellow passenger’s up there, too. Not only is it kind, but it could make the boarding process more efficient for everyone else.
Keep your personal things well
It’s important to be mindful of your personal belongings. Avoid hitting other passengers with your bag, as you walk down the aisles(过道), by keeping it in front of you and close to your body. And once you sit down, you should stay there, and make sure you have everything you will need for the flight once you settle in your seat. Reaching over other passengers to access the overhead storage during the flight is uncomfortable for everyone.
Respect your (limited) space
In the narrow space of an airplane, maintaining your personal space will go a long way towards making a smoother ride for everyone. Let the middle seat passenger use the armrests (it’s the least you can do), and keep your legs within the width of the chair frame.
Be willing to swap seats with a family
Airlines sometimes reserve certain seats for special passengers or charge extra fees for adjacent(毗连的) ones, making it tough for family members to buy seats together. If you’re traveling alone, offer to switch seats so that a family can sit beside each other; it’s a kind gesture that they won’t forget. But be sure to delay swapping until the plane has reached the safe altitude, as switching seats while everyone is boarding can be an inconvenience for those standing in the walkways.
21. To be a polite airline passenger, you need to do the following except .
A. lending a helping hand to your travelling companion
B. using the armrests to support your arms if you want
C. avoiding reaching over others to open the overhead storage
D. keeping your bag in front of you while walking down the aisles
22. If a man wants to swap the seat with you, you should .
A. charge extra fees for offering adjacent seats B. ask him to reserve the seat online in advance
C. offer your seat and stand in the walkways D. put off swapping unless it is safe enough
23. Where can you most probably find the text
A. In a daily newspaper. B. In a literature book. C. In an airport guidebook. D. In an official document.

When Laura reached school-going age the discussions about moving became more urgent(紧迫的). Her father did not want the children to go to school with the village children and for once her mother agreed with him. Not because, as he said, they ought to have a better education than they could get at Lark Rise; but because he feared they would tear their clothes and catch cold and get dirty heads going a mile and a half to and from the school in the village. So empty cottages in the market town were examined and often it seemed that the next week or the next month they would be leaving Lark Rise for ever; but again each time something would happen to prevent the removal, and gradually a new idea came up. To gain time, their father would teach the two eldest children to read and write, so that, if asked by the School Attendance Office, their mother could say they were leaving the small village shortly, and in the meantime, they were being taught at home.
So their father brought home two copies of Mavor’s First Reader and taught them the alphabet; but just as Laura was beginning on words of one syllable(音节), he was sent away to work on a distant job, only coming home at weekends. Laura, left at the c-a-t s-u-t-s on the m-a-t’s stage, then had to carry her book round after her mother as she went about her housework, asking, “Please, Mother, what does h-o-u-s-e spell ” or “W-a-l-k, Mother, what is that ”
Often when her mother was too busy or too tired to attend to her, she would sit and fix her eyes on a page that might as well have been printed in Hebrew(希伯来语) for all she could make of it, frowning(锁眉) and studying the print as though she would make out the meaning by force of concentration(专注).
After weeks of this, there came a day when, quite suddenly, as it seemed to her, the printed characters took on a meaning. There were still many words, even on the first page of that simple book, she could not understand; but she could jump those yet make sense of the whole. “I’m reading! I’m reading!” she cried aloud. “Oh, Mother! Oh, Edmund! I’m reading!”
24. The children’s father decided to teach them to read and write so that they .
A. had an excuse not to have to move B. had a reason for not attending school
C. could write to the School Attendance Office D. would be educated before they left the village
25. The underlined part left at the c-a-t s-u-t-s on the m-a-t’s stage means that .
A. Laura was working hard and learning quickly B. her father had no time to teach her
C. her mother was too busy to attend to her D. Laura knew little about how to read and write
26. From the passage we can infer that made Laura stare at a page in her book.
A. her lack of concentration B. her inability to understand
C. her need to understand Hebrew D. her determination to understand

California has been facing a drought for many years now, with certain areas even having to pump freshwater hundreds of miles to their distribution system. The problem is growing as the population of the state continues to expand. New research has found deep water reserves under the state which could help solve their drought crisis. Previous drilling of wells could only reach depths of 1,000 feet, but due to new pumping practices, water deeper than this can now be extracted(抽取). The team at Stanford investigated the aquifers(地下蓄水层) below this depth and found that reserves may be triple(三倍的) what was previously thought.
It is profitable to drill to depths more than 1,000 feet for oil and gas extraction, but only recently in California has it become profitable to pump water from this depth. The aquifers range from 1,000 to 3,000 feet below the ground, which means that pumping will be expensive and there are other concerns. The biggest concern of pumping out water from this deep is the gradual setting down of the land surface. As the water is pumped out, the vacant space left is compacted(压缩) by the weight of the earth above.
Even though pumping from these depths is expensive, it is still cheaper than desalinating(脱盐) the ocean water in the largely coastal state. Some desalination plants exist where practical, but they are costly to run and can need constant repairs. Wells are much more reliable sources of freshwater, and California is hoping that these deep wells may be the answer to their severe water shortage.
One problem with these sources is that the deep water also has a higher level of salt than shallower aquifers. This means that some wells may even need to undergo desalination after extraction, thus increasing the cost. Research from the exhaustive study of groundwater from over 950 drilling logs has just been published. New estimates of the water reserves now go up to 2,700 billion cubic meters of freshwater.
27. How could California’s drought crisis be solved according to some researchers
A. By building more reserves of groundwater. B. By drawing water from the depths of the earth.
C. By developing more advanced drilling devices. D. By improving its water distribution system.
28. What can be inferred about extracting water from deep aquifers
A. It was considered vital to solving the water problem. B. It is bound to gain support from the local people.
C. It was not considered worth the expense. D. It may not provide qualified freshwater.
29. What is mentioned as a consequence of extracting water from deep underground
A. The sinking of land surface. B. The harm to the ecosystem.
C. The damage to aquifers. D. The change of the climate.
30. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To encourage people to save water. B. To promote the seawater desalination.
C. To introduce a new way of extracting freshwater. D. To draw people’s attention to the droughts in California.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写词数应为150左右。
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list.
“C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do ” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”
Paragraph1: Slowly, Peter raised his hand.
Paragraph 2: Peter looked around.
