One of the most inspiring quotes I ever heard was by Brian Tracy. He said: “The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is that successful people fail many more times than unsuccessful people.” I personally experienced its wisdom right after my first book was published. Like many authors, I expected hundreds of bookstore customers lining up for me to sign copies for them. I’m afraid to say, it didn’t quite happen like that.
My first signing was arranged at the largest book store in the city. Filled with anticipation, I was put into a private signing room in the beautiful store. However, not a single customer entered the room. As each minute passed, I became increasingly anxious.
After 90 minutes of long waiting I was absolutely distraught.
For the four years writing the book. I had felt a sense of mission and purpose like never before in my life. Working a full 8-hour day in my clinic. I had to get into bed by 9:30 pm every day, so I could wake up at 5:30 in the morning and have two hours of writing before heading into my clinic. Before I ever began each writing session, I would close my eyes for 10 minutes and then whisper, “Please allow me the words to touch just one person’s life.”
Now sitting there alone at my first book signing, I wondered if my entire life wasn’t just a big joke. At that moment, just when I couldn't feel any worse, a middle-aged couple walked into the room. I managed to hide my emotions and introduced myself and my book. The couple turned to each other, and the husband nodded to his wife. She then told me, “I think we’ll get the book.”
“We’re buying it,” she said hesitantly, "because we lost our son two years ago. Maybe your story will help us get over it.”
At that moment, I knew if I never sold another copy of the book, my four years of writing it had served its purpose. Although I would have many more challenging years until my book caught on and sold well, this couple’s story was all the motivation I needed at that point to keep me moving ahead.
24.The underlined word "distraught" in Paragraph 3 probably means __________
A.hopeful and eager B.cheerful and proud
C.upset and disappointed D.bored and impatient
25.What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A.The writer had to quit his job to make time for his writing.
B.The writer was not sure about the purpose of his writing at first.
C.The process of writing the book was full of pains and frustration.
D.The writing was completed with great self-discipline and efforts.
26.Why does the author say “my four years of writing it had served its purpose” in the last paragraph
A.Because he had succeeded in selling the first book to the couple.
B.Because he had managed to touch someone’s life with his book.
C.Because he was quite satisfied with the feedback of his readers.
D.Because he had found someone who appreciated his writing.
27. The writer quotes Brian Tracy to stress the importance of
A. wisdom B. success C. confidence D. determination

Unless you're very young or very old, it's likely you have some kind of relationship with e-mail, whether you get hundreds of messages a day or a few dozen a week. A new study suggests that how we deal with these incoming messages could be affecting our stress levels and overall health.
A team from the Future Work Centre in the UK surveyed 2, 000 people across various industries, sectors, and job roles, asking participants how they managed their email and how much associated stress they felt as a result. Overall, those who spent the most time organizing and staying on top of messages felt the most email-related pressure too.
“While e-mail can be a valuable communication tool it's clear that it's a source of stress of frustration for many of us. The people who reported it being most useful to them also reported the highest levels of e-mail pressure!” said one of the team, Richard Mackinnon.
Two of the habits linked to more email-related stress were checking for messages first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Half of those surveyed had push notifications (消息推送)set up for new e-mail, while 62 percent of respondents left their e-mail app open all day and all night. Both were linked to higher levels of e-mail pressure. The survey also found that managers suffered more than non-managers.
Stress is not just a problem when it comes to our mood—it's been linked to a lot of disorders such as heart disease, weight gain, memory impairment (减弱),digestive problems, and depression.
The researchers suggest that the relationship between email-related stress and the negative impact on home life is not the same for everyone.
28. What's the purpose of the study
A. To find out how many people have an email account
B. To know what sort of people use email most.
C. To find out how email management is related to stress.
D. To show what changes email has brought about to people.
29. What does Richard Mackinnon think of email
A. It brings more strengths. B. It is not an essential tool.
C. It is a double-edged sword D. It makes people puzzled.
30. Which of the following habits causes the most stress
A. Checking email in the morning.
B. Checking email in the evening.
C. Keeping email app open at work.
D. Setting up push notifications for new email.
31. Where does the text most probably come from
A. Science fiction. B. A science report.
C. Fashion magazine. D. A book guide.
D
If you struggle to fall asleep quickly, you’re not alone! Fortunately, there are plenty of solutions you can try. With a few changes, you can fall asleep fast every night!
Keep your room dark. Turn off all the lights above your head when you go to bed. Any bright light can make you believe it is too early in the day for sleep. If you want to read or write before bed, try using a small book light. Now that blue lights can keep you awake, red ones are a great choice.
If you can, keep noise in and around your room the lowest at night. If you have an old clock that ticks loudly and keeps you awake, replace it with a silent one. If you share your home with anyone else, request that they keep noises like talking, music, or TV shows at the lowest while you are trying to sleep. It is difficult to fall asleep if you live near a busy road or hear other boring sounds after bedtime. You could get a white noise machine or play recordings of nature sounds, like waves or whales’ singing. You could also listen to soft, relaxing music.
Read a book in bed if you have difficulty in falling asleep. Staying in bed doing nothing when you’re having trouble falling asleep may keep you wide awake. While reading in bed may be slightly harmful to your eyes, it can distract (分散) you from your thoughts and help you feel sleepy. But remember to read from a print book rather than something with a screen. The light from electronic screens can keep you awake.
Lowering your body temperature helps you sleep, so set the room temperature between 15.5℃-21℃ could do the trick.
32. What color book light should you choose to read before bed
A. Red. B. Blue. C. White. D. Orange.
33. What is the author’s attitude towards reading in bed
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Favorable. D. Uncaring.
34. What can we inferred from the text
A. Reading on cellphones sometimes helps you fall asleep.
B. The lower your temperature while sleeping is, the better.
C. Bright lights are better for your reading before going to bed.
D. Playing recordings like birds’ singing can improve your sleep.
35. How does the author organize the text
A. By giving examples. B. By asking questions.
C. By offering suggestions. D. By listing research results
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
To Start a Great Day
Some people find mornings filled with optimism, while others would just stay in bed until the clock passes the noon hour. Don't fear that because it is possible to get the day started right, no matter what comes your way.
36 Why start your day unorganized If you organize your to-do list, breakfast mend and your clothes the night before, you'll wake up feeling in control and relaxed. What a little efficiency it is! You'll save the frustration, leaving you ready to deal with more important issues.
Try 15 minutes of meditation(沉思). Some might he afraid that a meditation session early in the morning could just put you back to sleep. But genuine meditation actually stimulates (刺激)the brain in a deep and thoughtful way. 37 Center yourself with thoughtful thought and be open to the positive energy the world brings to you.
Begin with inspiration reading. 38 Reading the news is a sad way to start a day. Buy a few books that are uplifting, inspiring, or even humorous for your first brain stimulus. This will give you positive, fun thoughts to keep you energetic throughout the day.
39 If the first thing you see when you wake up is a dirty wall or a poor winter yard, you can certainly improve those few critical minutes with a pleasing splash of color. So pick up a pleasant bouquet every few days and set it right in your view.
Schedule a hopeful appointment. I never feel more energized getting out of bed than when I have an important meeting about an exciting opportunity. The prospect of a fun and productive encounter usually wakes me with a smile and often without an alarm clock. I purposefully schedule as many meetings like this as possible. 40
A. Plan your day the night before.
B. Open your eyes to fresh flowers.
C. Reading newspapers can make you feel good.
D. Try a cup of green tea to start with.
E. It allows you to clear distractions from your mind.
F. In that way, I get as many great days as I want.
G. In the morning, we must allow some time for reading.

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a Saturday afternoon. The color of the sky was changing, first light gray, then dark gray, and finally dark and dense. The wind was blowing heavily, and the trees were swaying in the strong wind. It began to rain cats and dogs. Soon, the road was filled with puddles from the rain.
On such a stormy afternoon, my mother took my five year old brother, Christopher, and me to a new big toy store she had read about in the newspaper. “So many toys,” the advertisement had shouted in full and flashy color, “that we had to get a huge warehouse to fit them all!”
Christopher and I couldn't have been more excited. We ran across the parking lot, through the cold and biting rain, as fast as our little legs could carry us. We left our mother outside to battle with the frustrating umbrella, which never worked when she wanted it to. “Christine! Take care of your young brother!” Mother shouted at the top of her voice.
“Christine! I'm going to find the Lego section (乐高积木区)! There's a new pirate ship I want, and I have four dollars! Maybe I can buy it!” Christopher exclaimed and ran off excitedly. I only half heard him. I took a right turn and, to my wide-eyed delight, found myself in the midst of the Barbie (芭比) World.
I was studying a Barbie and doing some simple math in my head when suddenly an earthshaking clap of thunder roared from the storm outside. I jumped at the noise, dropping the doll to the floor. The lights flickered (闪烁) once and died, covering everything in a blanket of blackness. Thunder continued to shake the sky and lightning illuminated (照亮)the store for seconds, casting frightening shadows on my mind.

It would be a great pleasure for us to spend the whole vacation here. While staying here, not only will you be offered housing for free, but also I will show you around some places of interest and scenic spots in my hometown, which will be a feast for your eyes. Moreover, tasting some famous local snacks is what you can never leave out. Walking in the street and enjoying the traditional Chinese elements, you will experience the local history and culture as well as our customs. I believe that you’ll surely have a good time. I would be quite honored if you could accept my invitation.

参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
“Oh no,” I thought, “Where's Christopher?” Scared, I was frozen to the spot, overcome with the need to see my brother, to hug and make certain he was all right. My stomach twisted and turned inside. I ran up and down the aisles(过道) through the blackness, panic filling my small chest and making it difficult to breathe. I knocked into displays of candy and tripped over toys, all the while like crazy calling my brother's name. Anxious as I was, I could barely see his figure. Tears of frustration and fear ran down my cheeks, but I continued to run.
Paragraph 2:
“Christine, I'm here.”Excitement took my breath away — there in the dark Lego aisle I found Christopher. He was standing alone, perfectly still, next to the pirate ship set. I began to cry out from relief, throwing my arms around him and hugged him tightly. He hugged me back, saying, “I knew if I waited here, Christine, you would be able to find me.” Then, I took his hand in mine and we went to find our mother, who must be desperately searching the store for us.
