Learning objectives
Knowledge objectives:Knowledge objectives:
1. Understand the new words and expressions ( underground, mine, be fewer in number than, be equal with sb ) from listening & reading.
2. Learn more details about the reasons why the blacks in South Africa fought for their equal rights from listening & saying.
Skill objectives:
1. Listen to the first part of the speech for the main idea (the main reasons why Elias joined the ANC Youth League).
2. Listen for the specific information (the three reasons) by identifying the adverbs (first, secondly, thirdly) and the key words (passbook, family, land).
3. Listen and fill in the table (3) to see the different life and work of the blacks & whites at Elias’ time
4. Talk about the the three reasons why Elias joined the ANC Youth League and summarize them briefly (for personal freedom;the freedom for work & life, the basic right for living).
Affection objectives:
Get Ss to learn more about Elias’ story and understand the terrible condition of the black in South Africa.
Teaching procedure
1. Lead in: Ss talk about Elias’ Story focusing on why he followed Mandela:
Where did he work in Johannesburg?
What was Elias' problem when he worked in Johannesburg?
Why couldn't Elias get the passbook to live in Johannesburg?
(because he was not born there. More important, as a black person, he had no right to live and work any other places )
Why could not the black people work & live anywhere as the white did? (they did not had the personal freedom to choose what to do and where to live)
2. While-listening Stage
Listen for the fist time and get the main idea with two questions:
1. What’s the topic?(Why Elias joined the ANC Youth League)
2. I joined the ANC Youth League because it fought for equal rights for black and white people in South Africa. Here are three reasons.
