Guided reading
Bennett Cerf (1898-1971) was a famous New York publisher, known for his humour and talent for storytelling. He was a popular public figure who frequently appeared on TVand radio. Cerfwrote this short piece for a collection of essavs on reading called The Wonderful World of Books, published in 1953. Many people back then were worried that literature would be replaced by television, but Cerfwas optimistic. He believed that every new generation would continue to read and appreciate good books.
Guided reading
In this essay, Cerf passionately discusses the different ways in which reading broadens our minds and enriches our lives. His style is warm and personal. He doesn't try to impress us with his knowledge, rather, it is clear that the piece was written simply to share his enthusiasm about reading. Cerfs use of analogies strengthens his argument Bydoing so,he illustrates particular points more clearly. For example, Cerf compares books to houses: while each stands by itself, they form something larger when put together in a library, just like individual houses form a city. If we use analogies in our writing,it will make our texts easier to understand and much more interesting to read.
