B卷——大题提能练
Ⅰ.阅读理解
(2021·福建高三月考)About 50 feet from shore, two brothers were fighting for their lives. They had been swept out to sea in a rip current, their mouths barely able to stay above the water. Thick fog made it difficult for beachgoers on Northern California's Trinidad State Beach to see the guys, but the screams were unmistakable. The brothers, ages 15 and 20, were wearing shorts and T shirts, unsuitable for a November day, let alone the 50 degree water.
Luckily, four surfers in wet suits were nearby. Narayan Weibel, Spenser Stratton, and Adrian York, all 16, along with Tai Ortiz beck, 15, were on their surf boards riding up and down the coast on five foot waves when hearing the cries. They turned and saw two heads moving up and down repeatedly and four flailing arms.
“We looked at each other and knew these guys were about to drown”, Weibel told the Washington Post. Weibel, Stratton and Ortiz beck paddled (划) toward the distressed swimmers while York headed to shore to warn someone to call 911. He then dived back in to help his friends.
As the surfers drew close, the brothers were struggling. Ortiz beck pulled up alongside the younger brother. Grabbing him under his arms, he lifted him up onto his board. Stratton and Weibel, meanwhile, were trying their best to help the older brother. He was large, 250 to 300 pounds, and panicked. York arrived in time to help get the older brother at the top of the second board.
The surfers then paddled several minutes through rough water to the medical help waiting onshore. The brothers were scared but fine.
“When we get a call like this one, it's usually too late by the time we get there,” says Dillon Clevenger, a first responder. “I can't say enough about what these surfers did. They were willing and prepared to risk their lives.”

1.What does the underlined word “flailing” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Desperately waving.

D.Fully open.
A 解析:词义猜测题。根据第二段中的“They turned and saw two heads moving up and down repeatedly and four flailing arms.(他们转过身来,看到两个脑袋不停地上下移动,还有四只挥舞的手臂)”可知,受困的游泳者在水中应是拼命挥舞手臂使自己不会那么快沉下去。A项“Desperately waving.(拼命挥手)”符合文意。故选A。
2.Why did York make his way to the shore
A.To warn swimmers of danger.
B.To make an easy dive.
C.To have someone call for help.
D.To pull up the brother.
C 解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Weibel, Stratton and Ortiz beck paddled (划) toward the distressed swimmers while York headed to shore to warn someone to call 911.(威贝尔、斯特拉顿和奥尔蒂斯 贝克划着桨向受困的游泳者走去,约克则前往岸边,提醒人们拨打911)”可知,约克跑去岸边是为了提醒人们向911寻求帮助。C项“To have someone call for help.(让人打电话求救)”符合文意。故选C。
3.What can we learn from the words of Dillon
A.The accident was hard to avoid.
B.The surfers were brave and heroic.
C.The first responder got a call too late.
D.Swimming in the sea was not permitted.
B项“The surfers were brave and heroic.(冲浪者们勇敢无畏)”符合文意。故选B。
4.What's the best title of the passage
A.A Report about Surfing
B.Two Brothers Fighting for Lives
C.An Adventure on Shore
D.Surfers Coming to the Rescue
D 解析:标题归纳题。通读全文可知,文章主要讲述了四个冲浪者救出被困游泳者的事情,因此文章的中心人物是四个勇敢无畏的冲浪者。D项“Surfers Coming to the Rescue(前来救援的冲浪者)”为文章的最佳标题。故选D。

Dear David,
I am writing to show my deep apology for not being able to make the Daily Report tomorrow.
As one of the representatives of our school, I am scheduled to participate in a Poetry Reading Competition tomorrow, which leaves not enough time for the preparation of the Daily Report. However, practising my spoken English in your class is what I have been longing for, so it would be a real pity just to let the chance slip away. I sincerely hope you can rearrange my presentation, offering me another opportunity.
Once again, I am sorry for any inconvenience caused. Hope you can accept my apology and thank you for your understanding.
Yours Sincerely,

Located halfway up the Italy’s Apennine Mountain, about 100 miles northeast of Rome, the Hotel Rigopiano has never been easy to reach. But its isolation (隔绝) only adds to its appeal, attracting a great number of tourists.
Snow began to fall across the Apennines in January and lasted for days. From his home in the Rome suburbs, Matrone watched the weather with concern. He and his wife, Cicioni, had planned an overnight getaway to the hotel. But now they wondered whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. By the time they neared the hotel six hours later, they were battling a snowstorm. When they finally arrived, they were both cold and exhausted. They checked into their room and went to bed early.
As they awoke the next day, they discovered that their difficulty had worsened overnight. The cars in the parking lot were invisible. The phone and power lines were down. They were having breakfast when the hotel began to shake. An earthquake with a magnitude (震级) of 5.7 had struck the mountain. “Get out of here!” Matrone shouted to his wife. They headed quickly to the parking lot, where others were digging their cars. Fifteen minutes after the first earthquake, another quake hit, this one measuring 5.6.
With a dozen vehicles freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a six foot high wall of snow. Matrone climbed out of his car and investigated it. There was no road in sight. “We're trapped!” he told his wife. So they had no choice but to make their way back to the hotel.
As it was getting dark, they managed to be back. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche (雪崩) before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed and size, grabbing rocks and trees and anything else in its way down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those caught inside the hotel were left buried in the icy rocks and ruins.

When Matrone came to himself, he was stuck in the darkness. Lying on his stomach, he realized with horror that he was under something heavy and couldn't move at all.“Cicioni! Cicioni!”he called, but there was no response. He could hear nothing of what was happening at the surface. The whole world was dead still. What he had to face was a terrible reality—they were buried alive. Despair washed over him. He asked himself again and again,“Who is going to save us?”
It was not until the next morning that the rescuers finally arrived. Without any hesitation they got down to detecting the remains of the hotel and they were delighted to discover there was sign of life beneath. With great efforts they removed the thick snow and began cutting the roof. Then they carefully lowered themselves through the hole they'd made. Suddenly, they heard someone crying for help in a weak voice. It was Matrone. Later all the survivors were rescued including Matrone's wife. The couple felt really lucky to be still alive!
