“What is the story of your piano " a new friend asked over dinner. My piano sits in the corner of my small living room.
My piano has a story "All pianos have stories" she said. Suddenly, my piano's story came flooding out of me fully-formed as if I'd always had this tale to tell.
I loved music since childhood. I started with the recorder and moved on to instrument like the violin, trumpet and guitar. But playing the piano had always been my dream, a dream our family could not afford.
I grew up in an immigrant Chinese family in Toronto. My father waited tables in a Chinese restaurant, and my mother worked in a Chinese laundry. In spite of our poor childhood, my siblings(兄弟姐妹)and I were always fed with love. I can't remember which birthday it was when she spent the money buying me a doll. Of course, by then I'd grown out of the age of wanting dolls, but she worked too hard to know that, and I never told her. I happily and gratefully accepted the doll because I loved the gift that was her loving me enough to buy it for me.
So it was eventually with my piano. It was in my last year of high school. I took piano lessons for about a year before university forced me to stop. I had to make a decision: to work towards the more practical goal of medical school or my love for music. Finally I chose to stop piano lessons.
I moved that piano around with me over the next decade—until my son was born. He showed an early interest in music, so I put him in piano lessons. I played that piano through my son—although guitar was finally his instrument of choice.
I've come to realize that for my career, I've let all personal pleasures fall away. I figured I'd get back to playing the piano when I retire. Maybe it's time to get that piano retuned(重新调音)again, this time for myself, before it's too late to enjoy. Maybe that's something we all should do right now.
Sometimes a single question can open whole paths of thinking and discovery. So, what is the story of your piano

Facial recognition cameras are everywhere, including in your smartphone. Many people rely on this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or make quick payments, but there is a problem: Everyone is wearing masks. What a hassle!
Now, panies have updated their software. Facial recognition technology can now identify people even if they are wearing a mask
Beijing-based tech company Hanwang has announced a software which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks, Engineering & Technology(E&T)reported. What's the secret It's all about your eyes. Marios Savvides, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition technology. As we get older, he said, our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same -even if we put on weight. Another company, Geneva-based Tech 5, has also been working on this kind of software. Another Japan based NEC Corp claims a surprising 99.9 percent truth rate when identifying people with masks.
Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It's about public safety. For example, you don't need to present an ID card, which can be lost or stolen. It also means. that virus aren't spread by touching things, said NEC's Shinya Takeshima. "Touchless verification(验证)has become extremely important due to the coronavirus," he said to Reuters. "We hope to contribute to safety and peace of mind." More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime. "It can detect crime suspects(嫌疑犯)or terrorists," said Huang Lei, Hanwang's vice president. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force and other governments.
Huang admits one big weakness of this technology: It fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses. "In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost," Huang said to E&T.
28. What does the underlined word "hassle" in paragraph I probably mean
A. A habit. B. A mistake. C. A rule. D. A trouble
29. The facial recognition software mainly depends on___________ to identify people with masks.
A. The forehead B. The shape of faces. C. The eye area D. The facial expressions
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The future of facial recognition technology. B. The advantages of facial recognition technology
C. Different types of facial recognition software. D. The problems with current facial recognition technology.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The new technology cannot keep key facial information
B. It is necessary to make improvements in the new technology
C. Huang has a negative attitude toward the new technology
D. The new technology doesn't work when people wear sunglasses.
D
Beep! Beep! Barcode(条形码)technology makes it faster and easier to buy things in stores. You've probably seen the black-and-white zebra stripes(条纹)on product packaging. This year, this great invention is 50 years old!
On a Sunday afternoon in 1971, IBM engineer George Laurer came up with a code that could be printed on food labels(商标). It became the basis for the Universal Product Code, which was used by many grocery companies starting in 1973, according to The New York Times. Before this, cashiers had to add up prices by hand.
Time has proven it to be a great invention. Today, barcodes are scanned over 6 billion times every day and used by 2 million companies worldwide, PR Newswire reported.
What information does a barcode contain Where the product comes from, where it has been, its price, expiration date(过期时间)…you name it. It can also help stores keep track of their products. For example, if there are 10 boxes of milk and a customer buys one, it will be recorded so that the store owner knows there are nine boxes left. In the 1980s, libraries started using barcodes to keep track of books in this way.
"Its creation allowed the first digitization in the control of the stock(库存)," José Maria Bonmat from AECOC, a Spanish commercial association, told El Mundo.
The next generation of barcodes, such as QR codes, can hold more information. "They can tell consumers if a product contains allergens(过敏原)or if it is organic. This provides consumers with a greater level of trust in the products they buy," said GS 1, an organization that develops global barcode standards.
32. What do we know about barcodes
A. They were first used in New York. B. They were invented five decades ago.
C. They were based on the Universal Product Code. D. They were designed by a cashier in a grocery store.
33. According to Jose Maria Bonmat, barcodes can___________.

“There is nothing noble(高尚的)in being superior(优秀的)to your fellow man;true nobility is being superior to your former self." —Emest Hemingway
As Hemingway says, self-improvement is a noble cause. 36 Much of who we are is determined by how we relate with others around us. When we seek to improve ourselves, we can also make our relationships with others better.
37 If you have a good self-image, then others are likely to relate to you in a positive way. When people see a self-controlled and confident individual, they are likely to be affected in a positive way. And this can result in a more optimistic and constructive relationship.
Only when you have accepted who you are can you grow. If you continuously fight against yourself, you won't have the emotional energy you need to better yourself. If you wish to get on with people better, then you may start by accepting yourself. 38
If you are on a personal path that is going upwards, then you are likely to find a friend or partner who is also seeking to better themselves and their situations. 39
Focusing on your good qualities and attempting to protect and improve these characteristics will help you become a better person. 40 When you stop damaging who you are, you are likely to avoid ruining relationships and this can lead to longer and more meaningful connections with others.
A. Like-minded people attract one another.
B. When you feel confident, you keep calm.
C. It will also stop you from damaging yourself.
D. The way you view yourself affects how others view you.
E. This will probably help you become a successful person.
