36.根据上文“it’s not difficult to make yourself interesting at a dinner party (在晚宴上让自己变得有趣并不难)”可知,下文应主要讲述如何在晚宴上让自己变得有趣。下文“So the main thing is just to show up and be adventurous, trying different foods and talking to strangers. (所以最主要的事情就是去尝试,去冒险,尝试不同的食物,和陌生人交谈)”可推知,本段主要说明想在晚宴上让自己变得有趣,就要勇于冒险,勇于探索。由此可知,B项“The first step is to go exploring(第一步是去探索)”承上启下,符合题意。故选B项。
37.根据下文“it can bring in “I have this old, broken-down vehicle” or “I rode the bus with these crazy people who were laughing at silly jokes in the back.” It just opens up conversation. (它可以带入“我有这辆破旧的车”或“我和那些在后面嘲笑愚蠢笑话的疯子一起乘坐公共汽车。”它只是打开了对话)”可知,设空处应该是提了一个不太好的问题,只是开始交流,但并不会给人留下有趣的印象。由此可知,C项“If you ask the question “How did you get here ”(如果你问“你是怎么到这里来的?”这个问题)”能够承接下文,符合题意。故选C项。
38.根据下文“If you can’t take their wine away, you should certainly try to take away their soapbox. If you’re the host, you can ask them to help you in the kitchen with something and just remove them from the situation. (如果你不能拿走他们的酒,你当然应该让他们离开讲话的地方。如果你是主人,你可以让他们到厨房帮你做点什么,只是为了让他们摆脱那种情景)”可知,此处指出了一个问题的解决办法。由此推知,设空处提到了一个棘手的问题。F项“What about the person who has had too much to drink or won’t stop talking(喝太多酒或一直说个不停的人怎么办)”正是提出的问题,引出下文的解决办法,符合题意。故选F项。
39.根据上文“If you can’t take their wine away, you should certainly try to take away their soapbox (讲台). If you’re the host, you can ask them to help you in the kitchen with something and just remove them from the situation. (如果你不能拿走他们的酒,你当然应该让他们离开讲话的地方。如果你是主人,你可以让他们到厨房帮你做点什么,只是为了让他们摆脱那种情景)”可知,本段主要是为解决“喝太多酒或一直说个不停”这个问题提供方法。由此可知,E项“Or turn the conversation into a topic where they have little to say(或者把谈话变成他们没什么可说的话题)”是提出的另一个解决办法,承接上文,符合题意。故选E项。
40.根据上文“If you’re faced with an awkward silence at a dinner party, the only thing that always gets everyone talking again is to give the host a compliment.(如果你在晚宴上遭遇了尴尬的沉默,唯一能让大家再次交谈的方法就是赞美主人)”可知,此处指出赞美主人可以缓解尴尬的沉默,设空处承上启下,下文“This cake is extremely delicious and you have to tell me all about it.(这蛋糕特别好吃,你得告诉我它的一切)”对主人进行了赞美。 G项“He or she is the person who is feeling the weight of that awkwardness the most(他或她是最能感受到那种尴尬的人)”承上启下,符合题意。故选G项

When Susan arrived there later, she looked at the children in surprise. They were playing with what Susan considered boring happily.Seeing this,Susan understood that although there was no yo yo,they could also enjoy themselves.Jim asked her to join them in playing together instantly he saw Su- san.It was at that moment that Susan realized she had focused too much on what she didn't have but ignored what she had.
That night after the guests left,Susan sat alone in her room.On her bed was the purple dress given to her as a birth day gift. She thought to herself,“It seems that the dress doesn't look that bad.Actually,I like all the clothes Mom bought for me."She was sorry for having shouted at her moth er.So she ran to Mom's room and apologized,“Sorry,Mom.l should be satisfied with what I own.”Hearing the words, her mother hugged her tightly, touched by Susan's change.
其中 she had focused too much on what she didn't have but ignored what she had 与原文描述的 Susan固执地想要悠悠球以及第三段中的I don't think there is anything interesting to play in the house 呼应。
本文恰当运用了诸如 think to oneself, join sb in doing sth 等短语,以及时间状语从句(instantly he saw Susan)、强调句和多重宾语从句的复合句式(It was at that moment that Susan realized she had focused too much on what she didn't have but ignored what she had.) (On her bed was the purple dress given to her as a birthday gift.)

One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap(包装).On
September11th ,1958, Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my
lap, saying, "I promised you a gift, and here it is." What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my
friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. I told it over
and over how much I loved it!
One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the
poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever for several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such
words as "hopeless", "pitiful", and "dying", which sounded ominous.
Christmas was coming. "Don’t expect any presents this year. " Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the
living room."If your baby brother lives, that'll be Christmas enough." As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. I'd
never seen him cry before.
The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard
him say. "What He's all right " He hung up and shouted upstairs." The hospital said we can bring Richard
home!" "Thank God.'" I heard Mum cry.
From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them happy. And I was
also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there
flat. But I knew they were not empty; they were filled with love!

A British woman who won a $1 million prize after she was named the World's Best Teacher will use the cash
to bring inspirational figures into UK schools.
Andria Zafirakou, a north London secondary school teacher, said she wanted to bring about a classroom
revolution (变革). “We are going to make a change, ”she said. “I’ve started a project to promote the teaching of
the arts in our schools.”
The project results from the difficulties many schools have in getting artists of any sort - whether an
up-and-coming local musician or a major movie star - into schools to work with and inspire children.
Zafirakou began the project at Alperton Community School, her place of work for the past twelve years. “I've

seen those magic moments when children are talking to someone they are inspired by - their eyes are shining and
their faces light up,” she said. “We need artists, more than ever in our schools."
Artist Michael Craig-Martin said,“Andria's brilliant project to bring artists from all fields into direct contact
with children is particularly welcome at a time when the arts are being downgraded in schools." It was a mistake
to see the arts as unnecessary, he added.
Historian Sir Simon Schama is also a supporter of the project. He said that arts education in schools was not
just an add-on. “It is absolutely necessary. The future depends on creativity and creativity depends on the young.
What will remain of us when artificial intelligence takes over will be our creativity, and it is our creative spirit, our
visionary sense of freshness, that has been our strength for centuries."

An Australian professor is developing a robot to monitor the health of grazing cattle, a development that
could bring big changes to a profession that's relied largely on a low-tech approach for decades but is facing a
labor shortage.
Salah Sukkarieh, a professor at the University of Sydney, sees robots as necessary given how cattlemen are
aging. He is building a four-wheeled robot that will run on solar and electric power. It will use cameras and
sensors to monitor the animals. A computer system will analyze the video to determine whether a cow is sick.
Radio tags (标签) on the animals will measure temperature changes. The quality of grassland will be tracked by
monitoring the shape, color and texture (质地 ) of grass. That way, cattlemen will know whether they need to
move their cattle to another field for nutrition purposes.
Machines have largely taken over planting, watering and harvesting crops such as corn and wheat, but the
monitoring of cattle has gone through fewer changes.
For Texas cattleman Pete Bonds, it's increasingly difficult to find workers interested in watching cattle. But
Bonds doesn't believe a robot is right for the job. Years of experience in the industry - and failed attempts to use
technology - have convinced him that the best way to check cattle is with a man on a horse. Bonds, who bought
his first cattle almost 50 years ago, still has each of his cowboys inspect 300 or 400 cattle daily and look for signs
that an animal is getting sick.
Other cattlemen see more promise in robots. Michael Kelsey Paris, vice president of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's
Association, said a robot could be extremely useful given rising concerns about cattle theft. Cattle tend to be kept
in remote places and their value has risen, making them appealing targets.
32. What is a problem with the cattle-raising industry
A. Soil pollution. B. Lack of workers.
C. Aging machines. D. Low profitability.
33. What will Sukkarieh's robot be able to do
A. Monitor the quality of grass. B. Cure the diseased cattle.
C. Move cattle to another field. D. Predict weather changes.
34. Why does Pete Bonds still hire cowboys to watch cattle
A. He wants to help them earn a living. B. He thinks men can do the job better.
C. He is inexperienced in using robots. D. He enjoys the traditional way of life.
35. How may robots help with cattle watching according to Michael Kelsey
A. Increase the value of cattle. B. Bring down the cost of labor.
C. Make the job more appealing. D. Keep cattle from being stolen.

birthday gift for several months. However, she received a purple dress instead, which made her really
disappointed.
“I only want a yo yo as my birthday present. I don't want the dress and I hate purple,”Susan shouted at her
mother when she saw the dress.“Even a five- year- old child has a yo- yo. Do you know why others don't want to
be my friends It is all because 1 don't have a yo-yo. It is so boring to live in this house,”Susan said angrily.
Her mother ignored her complaints and changed the topic, saying,“Uncle Brown, Uncle Smith, Aunt Aniston
and their children are coming for dinner to night. So, you can play with your cousins.”“But I don't think there is
anything interesting to play in the house,”Susan complained again.
The guests arrived at 6:00 p.m. Susan guided the four children who came with the adults to her room.“Do
you have any interesting toys Susan...”asked Jim, one of the children. Susan felt that Jim was asking for a yo-yo.
She felt embarrassed and brought out her snakes and ladders(蛇梯棋). All the children played the game together.
Everyone enjoyed playing the game except Susan. After a little while, her cousin Sara asked,“Susan, can we go
downstairs to the basement ” Susan said,“No, there is nothing interesting to play in it." Ignoring Susan's words,
the children raced to the basement excitedly. They found there were some empty cartons, ropes, old broken toys.
Upon seeing this, Sara came up with an idea-the memory game. She arranged a few things on the floor and closed
her eyes. Then Jim took away an object randomly and Sara should guess what the missing object was.
