Module 9 Life history
Unit 2 He decided to be an actor.
Part 1. General Introduction
Basically, there are five aspects in this part.
Analysis of Teaching Material & Target Students
First, let me start from the teaching material.
In our text book, the second unit of a module focuses on the reading and writing.Today’s lesson is based on the topic of talking about people’s lives in the past ,taking Williams Shakespeare as an example.Students can learn some information about Shakespeare’s life and learn how to write people’s lives in the past. The passage comes in the form of a biography. The five paragraphs can be mainly divided into three parts. Part I is a brief introduction of William Shakespeare.
Part II mainly describes his life story and Part III tells us when he died and why he was famous.
Then, the students are in Grade Seven, more or less, they have heard about Shakespeare before. So it is easy to arouse their interest in this lesson and encourage them to take part .They have a desire for learning English and they are curious, active and fond of different activities, but it’s their first time to read a biography in English, they may be lack in functional language to introduce famous people.Few of them have adequate knowledge in topic-related expressions.
Teaching aims
Based on the features of my students and the requirements for reading in New English Curriculum,my teaching aims are designed as follows.
Language ability:They will learn some topic-related vocabulary and expressions and also they need to make an imitative writing.
Thinking quality:They will learn to think critically and solve practical problems.
Culture character:They will learn the key to Shakespeare’s success and think about themselves.
Learning ability:They will learn how to use different reading strategies and the past simple irregular verbs.
Key points and difficult points
According to the teaching aims and the core competence theory, the key points
are:
learning to cognize new words and expressions as well as reading strategies like PSC model and holistic reading method.
thinking critically about Shakespeare’s life stories in different times.
And the difficult point is:
How to write a new composition using what they have learned within limited time.
Teaching methods
To achieve the teaching aims, stress the important points and break through the difficult points,I adopt communicative approach, cooperative method and PSC model, and according to the modern perception theories,I also choose inquiry-based method.
Teaching Aid
New English Curriculum says it’s necessary and useful for teachers to use modern teaching facilities,so I use CAI to make the class lively interesting and effective, and a computer, handouts are also needed in this class.
Part 2 . Teaching procedures:
Now,I would like to share my teaching procedures in detail.
I adopt the PSP strategy, that is : pre-reading, while-reading and the post- reading.
Pre-reading activities
guessing game
At the beginning of the class,I will set a guessing game with the students,I will post some words about Shakespeare on the PPT, like birth time, hometown, famous works and so on.
(Purpose: It can introduce the background information and remove the obstacles of topic-related new words.)
brainstorm
Then I ask the students to have a brainstorm If you are the writer, what
kinds of information will you choose to write
(Purpose: Students may give various ideas and this is good to their critical and creative thinking. We will check the answers later in the passage.)
While-reading Activities
Here comes the while-reading.PSC model is really useful in teaching reading lessons,so this part,I adopt PSC as well as holistic reading method.
PSC reading
The students will be asked to:
Predict the main idea according to the title of the passage and the picture on Page 56.
Scan to read for main information.
Check the answers and gather more information.
While they are reading,I want to use one clue to link the whole passage,so I will guide students to circle all the numbers in each paragraph and ask them to pay attention to the numbers of different times. They can have a general understanding of the time line of Shakespeare’s life.
(Purpose: It is easy for students to understand that the passage is written in the time order, which can help students to lay a foundation for writing.)
deep-level reading
After getting the major information, students will be guided to find out more details. This is what I do in class Present an incomplete mind-up and tables for
students and they will be asked to fill out while reading. First , I will set Part 1 as an example to illustrate how to summarize information by taking notes. I will present Worksheet 1 to the students, like this:
By filling out the blanks,we can confirm some information in brainstorm, such as job and works. Then , students interact with each other to complete a timeline according to Para2-4, and the timeline is like this:
(Purpose:By doing this, students can have a better understanding of using the past tense to describe people’s lives in the past, and it is easy for students to cognize the different expressions of time and they can also learn that the passage is developed in two ways:timeline and activity line, which can lay a logical basis for the imitative writing. Some information like family, hobby, and dreams can be also conformed in this part)
Next,we will apply the same pattern to the last paragraph, and the Worksheet 3 is like this:
(Purpose: By transferring the information from the text into a brief map, students can easily come into a conclusion that we can use adjectives, such as rich, successful ,famous to comment people, which helps students to write assessment later in the writing.)
cultural-level reading
Here comes the reading for cultural difference.
After learning the basic information about the passage,we will focus on the cultural differences.I will ask :What are you most interested in Shakespeare
Different students have different answers,I will guide them to think critically and deeply. For example,I will encourage them to think why Shakespeare got married at 18 years old,at such a young age What does most people today do when they are 18 years old
(Purpose: Such questions can make students think critically to realize the different cultures among different times and different countries.)
I will also ask the students to think about the last sentence of the passage.--- He’s famous around the world, here,he’s means he was or he is, and also I will share my personal opinion with them and tell them he was or he is.both are OK.Because from the passage,we know he was really famous in the past, but today we can still see
his plays in English and in many other languages,he is still famous today.Students will learn that a man’s success does not fade over time and we should hold fast to our dreams.
Post-reading activities
Retelling
It is really useful for students to retell the passage based on the mind-map and timeline, and they will get a better understanding of the passage and consolidate what they have learned.
Writing
As what has been presented on the blackboard, students may have a clear idea to make an imitative writing about Lao She according to the key clues: mind-map , writing order ,past tense ,timeline and activity line, assessment.I will show his basic information on Worksheet 4,the writing is difficult to be finished in a limited class,so I will encourage students to work together as a group.
Summary and Homework
Summarize what we have learnt with all the students and the homework is to rewrite your writing better individually after class.
(Purpose: This can help students to consolidate the knowledge and homework will improve the students’ language abilities and learning abilities.)
Blackboard design
This is my blackboard design.
Part 3. Features of Design
strong theoretical basis
All the methods I adopt to cultivate students’ comprehensive abilities are based on New English Curriculum, core competence theory and modern perception theory,so I think my teaching methods are in line with the requirement.
reading strategies
Students can learn how to use PSP, PSC model to read passages and how to use timeline and activity line to write passages.
comprehensive abilities
During the class ,I develop students’ comprehensive abilities like learning abilities, creative thinking and cultural awareness .not only focus on a single one, I believe that they can write a brief biography in English successfully after the class, and I believe they will enjoy the lesson as well . That’s all about my presentation, thanks for listening.
