17-year-old Dasia Taylor was named one of 40 finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), the nation’s most famous Science and math competition for high school seniors.
Dasia’s sutures (缝合线) work by changing color if the patients’ pH level changes, indicating an infection. pH is one of the most common parts of wound healing, Dasia said. It changes very quickly, so it’s one of the fastest ways to recognize infection.
So, she started experimenting with root vegetables. “I found that beet changed color at the perfect pH point,” says Taylor. “That’s perfect for an infected wound. And so, I was like, ‘Oh, okay. So beet is where it’s at’.” Beet provided the perfect dye for her invention, changing from bright red to dark purple when a surgical wound becomes infected. After more than a year of research, Taylor is working on getting her sutures patented.
She imagines these sutures being used in developing countries where they can save lives and money. “The goal of my project is to reduce the number of deadly surgical site infections in developing countries because developing countries suffer from the most number of deaths due to surgical site infections,” she said. “I was like there is no way that that should be happening. The equity part of my brain and all the work that I do around equity was like ‘That shouldn’t be happening. They should have the resources to save their citizens in their country.’ So, my goal is to work on that and make sure that it can actually discover those types of infections and stuff.” After graduation, Dasia hopes to attend Howard University, study political science and finally become a lawyer.
24. How can a patient quickly know if a wound is infected
A. By observing the pH test paper.
B. Through the doctors’ examination.
C. By looking at sutures’ color changing.
D. By observing how the wound changes.
25. What did Dasia discover in her experiment
A. Beet has the same pH level.
B. Beet can change color at different times.
C. Beet therapy is good for wound healing.
D. Beet can be used to help her with the invention.
26. What can we learn about Dasia
A. She has won the invention patent.
B. She became the winner of the Regeneron STS.
C. She made contributions to surgical infection recognition.
D. She helped save lots of lives and money in developing countries.
27. What will Dasia’s future career probably involve
A. Medical and health work. B. Medical device development.
C. Something about the legal aid. D. Medical and science research.

A small but shining silver lining: The corona-virus has quickened the shift to pedal power in Europe. The German Cycling Association (ADFC) reports that Germans across the country are spending twice as much time biking as they were before the COVID-19. There is growing demand for bikes and shared-bike subscriptions, and now even shortages throughout bicycle supply chain. For bike shops it's an unexpected boom. So much so that it requires cities to improve their biking facilities.
In unimagined numbers, bikes are starting to take the place of cars in our cities. It has increased 930 miles of new bike lanes (车道) in Europe, "muscling aside cars on Europe's city streets," according to European Cyclists Federation. Belgium, Denmark, and the Netherlands are pioneering fast lanes for riders. "Pop-up lanes" are being used for bikes in Berlin and Paris; Rome has painted new bike lanes, in each case taking away lanes from cars.
Women riders are reportedly another big factor in the biking transformation. E-bikes are, too. E-bikes use an onboard battery to boost power when the rider is going up a hill, or just needs a rest. E-bikes have removed "the sweat factor." Who wants to show up to work or a party sweaty
The European Cyclists' Federation states that bikes are also strongly supported by European governments to cut carbon and increase the quality of their cities. European countries provide direct financial stimulation for cyclists.
At the end of April, France announced a 20 million Euro plan to promote cycling after the end of the lockdown. The plan includes 50 Euro vouchers (代金券) for the repair of a bike. Italy worked on a regulation for Covid recovery, by means of which 120 million Euro was set aside to cover 70% and up to 500 Euro of the price of conventional, muscle-powered and electric bikes.
28.What is the passage mainly about
A. The impact of the pandemic on people's life.
B. The bicycle industry booms in Europe.
C. The preference for bicycles globally.
D. The shift in choice on public transportation.
29.How many factors contribute to the growing demand for bikes in Europe
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
30.What can we learn from the passage
A. Measures have been taken to encourage Europeans to use bikes.
B. E-bikes become popular with Europeans because they are lazy.
C. More women in Europe choose to go to work by bike than men.
D. Financial support is the main reason why Europeans choose bikes.
31.Where is the passage probably taken from
A. a guidebook. B. a business plan.
C. a science report. D. a newspaper.
D
Aspirin was discovered in 1897, and an explanation of how it works followed in 1995. That, in turn, has encouraged some research leads on making better pain relievers through something other than trial and error. This kind of discovery—answers first, explanations later—is called "intellectual debt ". We gain understanding of what works without knowing why it works. We can put that understanding to use immediately, and then tell ourselves we'll figure out the details later. Sometimes we pay off the debt quickly; sometimes, as with aspirin, it takes a century; and sometimes we never pay it off at all.
In the Age of Intelligence, while machine learning presents lots of problems and gets things wrong, at least we know enough to be wary of the predictions produced by the system and to argue that they shouldn't be blindly followed: but if a system performs perfectly (and we don't know why), then we come to rely on it and forget about it and suffer consequences when it goes wrong.
It's the difference between knowing your car has faulty brakes and not knowing: both are bad, but if you know there is a problem with your brakes, you can increase your following distance, drive slowly and get to a mechanic as soon as possible. If you don't know, you're likely to find out the hard way, at 80mph on the highway when the car in front of you came to a sudden stop and your brakes give out.
We don't have much by way of solutions. Most important, we shouldn't trick ourselves into thinking that machine learning alone is all that matters. Indeed, without life value, machine learning may not be meaningful answers at all.
What is the purpose of mentioning aspirin in the first paragraph
A. To present the research process of aspirin.
B. To introduce a similar situation machine learning faces.
C. To show the difficulty in explaining how aspirin works.
D. To prove we can use something even when we don't understand.
What does the underlined word "wary" probably mean in the second paragraph
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Anxious. D. Watchful.
How does the writer prove that it's potentially worse if a system performs perfectly
A. By giving a definition. B. By making comparison.
C. By doing an experiment. D. By telling a story.
Which of the following statements is the writer likely to agree with
A. It's impossible to pay off Intellectual debt.
B. It's wise not to rely on machine learning.
C. It makes sense to prepare for danger in times of safety.
D. It's OK as long as a system works well.

One of the problems damaging our planet is the number of things we throw away. A more recent addition to the list of things we throw away is e-waste – electronic items that are broken and not recycled. 36 , but also because we lack the skills to repair them even if we know their value. Many millions of tons of televisions, phones, and other electronic equipment are abandoned each year. A UN report claims the 50 million tons of e-waste generated every year will more than double to 110 million tons by 2050, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the world. 37 .
Recently, there’s a growing trend for repair events and clubs which could be part of a solution to the growing amount of electrical and electronic junk. The BBC visited a Restart Project in London, which is one of many found around the world. One of its operators, Francesco Calo, said that "This project makes total sense. 38 . Besides, it helps people who cannot afford to get rid of items that have developed a fault."
39 . An experiment at the University of New South Wales involves extracting(提取) these materials from electronic gadgets(小工具). Apart from just being recycled, the European Union, for example, is trying to encourage manufacturers to reuse some extracted electronic components. 40 .With phones typically containing as many as 60 elements, this could be part of the solution to our appetite for new technology.
A. First of all, this project prolongs the life of electric objects.
B. It is partly because it’s cheaper to replace them than fix them.
C. It is reported that many people have made a big fortune from it.
D. Now solutions have been put forward to give this e-waste a new life.
E. So it’s thought that doing this could be more profitable than traditional recycling.
F. As many electrical items contain valuable metals, another solution is e-waste mining.
G.One of the reasons is that people don’t think their electronic items are fashionable enough.

With my mother, I can now really be tolerant.
I have also learned that everything has special 51 .When my mother got sick, I didn't want to 52 my two daughters with it. As my mother's daughter I was supposed to 53 take on the job. It shows me that it's all worth it.

One summer vacation, I learned some kids volunteered as guide dog raisers for a guide dog training center. Then I also wanted to take part in it. My parents supported it.
After I filled out the application form to be a guide dog raiser, two of the training center's workers came to my house to meet me and my family. They said, “After the volunteer helps raise a guide dog puppy for a year, the dog needs to be returned to the training center. There the dog will receive a five-month professional guide-dog training. Then the dog will stay with a blind person and help with his or her life.” The workers told us what a big responsibility it was to raise a guide dog puppy. And I promised I would do a great job.
We later got a call that our puppy was coming soon—a female yellow puppy. When Dad and I picked her up, I was glad. She was the prettiest dog I’d ever seen. Her name was Lisha. When I started working with Lisha, I learned right away how intelligent dogs are. Guide dog puppies seem to know they're special and were born to do special work. My main job was to help her grow, teach her basic house rules and how to get along with people, and let her learn about public places.
Lisha loved to ride in the car. I was allowed to take her anywhere a trained guide dog could go, including stores and buses. Lisha was a good listener. Whenever I felt I needed to talk to someone, Lisha was always there. She was a lovely puppy.
During the year, Lisha and my whole family developed a very close relationship. And we knew the day was coming when she would have to go back to the training center for the five-month professional guide-dog training. After that she would go to live with John, a blind man.

第二节:读后续写
Para 1:
When it was time for her to leave, we took Lisha on her last car ride with us. When we reached the training center, I dropped her off with the professional trainer. Sad though I was, I knew she was going to help people in need. Five months later, I got news that Lisha was passing each course for a trained guide dog. One day, I received a call from the center announcing that Lisha was to graduate as a guide dog and that she would be placed with John.
Para 2:
I was invited to present Lisha to John on her graduation day. Getting up early, my parents drove me to the training center. How excited to see Lisha again! She looked bigger and was happy to see us. I presented her to John, who thanked me for raising Lisha. I felt good, because I had played a part in helping John. As we left, I looked back and Lisha was looking straight at me. Then she looked up at John. She knew her job, and I knew they would make a great team.

M: The guests are leaving for New York tonight. But there will be no bus then. We need someone to get them to the airport on time.
W: I’d be happy to, but my car is under repair now.
M: In that case, we have to call a taxi.
(Text 2)
M: My secretary made a reservation for me for the 14th of January.
W: For how many nights
M: Six. But if my wife comes, I’ll stay for two more nights.
(Text 3)
M: I heard you were going to attend the meeting on Wednesday, Mary. I didn’t know you would go.
W: Yes, Gary. I am responsible for the project now. I took Dan’s place since he had to be on sick leave.
(Text 4)
W: Are you satisfied with the restaurant
M: Well, I have to say it’s not my thing. The food was fine, but the restaurant was too crowded and the waiters kept shouting all the time. I thought they should be working in a quieter and friendlier way.
(Text 5)
W: Mr. Black is very good at Spanish and now he is beginning to study French.
M: Yeah. And he also knows something of Chinese.
(Text 6)
W: Has Mr. Jones sent you the figures for next year’s advertising campaign yet
M: No, I haven’t received anything from him. If we don’t get those figures by tomorrow morning, we won’ t be able to draw up next year’s budget on time.
W: We have to set the budget before Thursday, so maybe you should call him and find out what happened.
M: I think I will. If I don’t hear from him by four, I’ll try calling his office.
(Text 7)
W: Are you OK, John
M: Yeah, just clearing out this cupboard, Emily. It’s full of old junk.
W: Ooh, what a lot of stuff. Is that a. …gorilla arm
M: Yes! Ah. . . that was a fun project.
W: Interesting.
M: Ooh, this is the microphone I recorded my first masterpiece with. A bit dusty. I wonder if it still works. Or maybe I should sell it. Who would buy it
W: Why don’t you freecycle it
M: Oh, that’s a good idea. I can exchange a microphone for a bicycle, right
W: No. You give it away. You give it to someone for free. It’s another way of recycling. There are websites that help match you to people who want these things.
M: Free. . . recycle. Freecycle. Yes, I like the idea. But I would like a free bicycle even more.
(Text 8)
W: So, Eric, how is life in Greenland these days
M: Oh, you know. Winters are long. I live on the coast, though, so I get to see the ocean every day. That’s always nice.
W: I heard that winters in Greenland are somewhat shorter than they used to be -global warming, I guess
M: Yes, that’s true. They’re calling it “the greening of Greenland”.
W: The “greening” What does that mean
M: Well, the average temperature in Greenland is rising twice as fast as in other places. So, now I have a few trees near my house. Trees didn’t use to exist in Greenland, you know! Neither did vegetables. So it’s amazing! Besides, farmers can grow more grass for their animals.
(Text 9)
W: Hello, this is Tina. I haven’t booked my flight to Washington DC yet, but I was wondering if you have any advice on how to best get to you from the airport
M: Yes, well, if you’re flying, Reagan National is the closest. You can take the underground right from there. Dulles is further away and a taxi is probably the easiest. And then Baltimore-Washington Airport connects to a train that you can take right into the main train station in town.
W: OK, cool, I think Reagan should be the best. And do you pretty centrally lie in Washington DC Like, next to all the sights and everything My friend asked me to stay in her house, but I don’t think it would be very convenient.
M: Yep. We’re in the Dupont Circle area, pretty central to Washington DC. You can walk down to the White House. The underground is right around the corner.
W: Do you include breakfast
M: Yes, madam, and we also offer dinner if you like.
W: OK. That sounds good. Thank you. I’m going to think about it and once I’ve got everything booked, I’ll give you a call.
M: OK. Have a good day.
(Text 10)
I really enjoy going to the movies with my friends on most weekends. I usually check the movie listings in the newspaper or online to see what is playing. I also check the movie reviews because I don’t want to see a bad movie.I like to arrive early at the movie theater so I don’t have to stand in line too long to buy tickets. Sometimes, the movie we want to see is sold out, so we might buy a ticket for a later showing. At the theater, I sometimes buy popcorn and a drink. The prices are sometimes high, but I like chewing something during a movie. I usually like to sit in an aisle seat somewhere in the middle of the theater. I think you can see the movie better instead of straining your neck if you are unfortunate enough to sit in the front rows. One thing I don’t like is when other people talk during the movie, put their feet up on the back of my seat, or bring crying babies to the theater. Everyone should be able to enjoy the movie.连城一中 2021-2022 学年(上)高三期末模拟考 请在各题目的答题区域内作答,超出黑色矩形边框限定区域的答案无效
