I was born in Thailand, where I feel at home. I am used to jumping on to a song taow (red taxi), and squeezing (挤过) in between two strangers. I am used to bargaining at the market to get a shirt that I like. I love telling bilingual (双语的) jokes and I am used to the surprised looks I get from the Thais when I can speak their language fluently.
Every two years my family goes to America for the summer, and every two years my world is turned upside down. The prices of everything are three times what they were in Thailand, but there is the sweet drink Dr. Pepper! And Bluebell Ice-cream! And everything you could imagine! I am amazed at it all, but the biggest change for me is the people. There are white people everywhere. I am not tall but average (中等的), my yellow hair is no longer out of place, and speaking English no longer draws looks. I should feel comfortable. I’m not out of place anymore, and nobody is looking at me, but I feel like they are. Now I feel out of place and different. I’m not used to giving people handshakes and hugs when I meet them for the first time. I get looks when I have trouble figuring out how much money to pay. I know different music, different places, and different fashion. I can’t understand these people who have never left their town or city.
Still, there are quite a few perks about living overseas. I get to meet people from all over the world, and I know how to adjust to (适应) different cultures and places. I have been to places most people see only in geography books. Still, being so different makes it hard to know who you are. I’m not Thai, but I am not American either. I am a mix of both cultures, a third culture kid.
24.When the Thais give the author surprised looks, she feels _____.
A. upset B. strange C. normal D. different
25.When the author returns to America, _____.
A. she makes more friends
B .she becomes more polite
C. she can't find what she needs
D. she is like a fish out of water
26.The underlined word “perks” in the last paragraph can be replaced by _____.
A .reasons B. problems C. advantages D. suggestions
27.In this text, the author mainly wants to describe _____.
A. her different lifestyles
B. a kind of culture shock
C. a feeling of loneliness
D. her ability to face difficulties
C
With the development of the economy, loose change (零钱) is often ignored by most of us. We have forgotten how those little, round metal pieces can add up. However, if you were a kid that had to clean the house for extra money, you’ll understand how important it is.
When I was a kid, I knew my parents could afford whatever I wanted, but Dad made me work for things that were “wants”. I knew Dad always carried a lot of change in his pockets. He had taught me that enough pennies would still get me what I wanted in the end.
Dad had his favorite reclining chair (躺椅) in his room where he would go after a long day at work. When he reclined in the chair, the change would fall from his pockets onto the floor under the chair, which was really a good chance for me to collect pennies. I’m sure he realized he had empty pockets when he took his clothes off, but he never said anything and never stopped sitting in the chair.
My kids learned early that change worked just as well as dollars and they also knew their dad saw no value in change. In fact, he saw it as a pain-in-the-neck so instead of asking him for money, they always asked if they could have his change.
Whenever I see a penny on a floor, I always pick it up. They’ve come in handy over the years, like at the check stand when someone needs a penny to check out, or my children are twelve cents short of their bus fare — little things, but important things.
28. Why is loose change ignored at present according to the author
A. Because people’s lives have improved a lot.
B. Because loose change is often noisy.
C. Because loose change isn’t easy to carry.
D. Because people find it is of no use.
29. Why did the author’s father ask her to work for her own “wants”
A. To help her earn a lot of money.
B. To tell her that pennies add up.
C. To save enough money for future use.
D. To let her know it was hard to earn money.
30. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that the author’s father _____.
A. didn’t care about loose change B. taught the author a good lesson
C. was really a hard-working person D. was too tired to look after his child
31. The underlined word “pain-in-the-neck” means that the author’s husband _____.
A. was really rich B. was very generous
C. had a problem with his neck D. paid little attention to change
D
My brother Stanley died last January from cancer ,and I spent a lot of time with him in hospital over his last few months. I witnessed the care he received and ,at the time ,I thought it was poor. It shocked and hurt me.
While Stanley was sick, I was a medical student. I therefore put a lot of time and energy in the medical profession. It gave me an insider's view of the care Stanley received ,when most people spending time with a very sick loved one only have an outside view. However ,as I see now it made me judge the care that his doctors and nurses gave him too harshly(严厉的).
We experienced long waits in emergency departments ,and doctors were unsure of the details of Stanley's case. We waited around for doctors to arrive ,but they seldom turned up. But worst of all was Stanley's senior doctor. Near the end ,he announced coldly that there was nothing left to try. “All the choices have been used ,"he said. And with that ,he left ,never to be seen again.
All this affected the way I thought about my studies. Did I want to work in a field where people treated patients as if they were numbers on a chart After Stanley died ,I finished my studies and graduated with all the rest of students in my year. They went on to get jobs in hospitals ,while I took a year out. I simply couldn't face working in medicine.
Finally ,I applied for and got a position as a cancer doctor in a busy clinic in a big city. Now I was a cancer doctor myself ,and I often had to tell patients bad news. It is a terribly difficult thing to inform someone that they have a serious illness. I also found that I couldn't always answer patients' questions. They would want to know whether they could be cured ,or how long they would live ,but it wasn't always possible to say.
It was then that I understood what difficult job health providers do. It made me think back to my experiences with doctors and nurses when Stanley was sick. Perhaps what I had thought was unprofessionalism(不专业)or coldness was just a reflection of the demanding nature of the work.
I began to see my patients as Stanley ,and myself no longer as his sister ,but one of his caregivers.
Now I was in their shoes-the people who spend every day caring for others.
I still miss Stanley horribly ,but at least now the anger has gone.
32.Why did the author feel upset in hospital
A. Because it was too late to cure her brother.
B. Because the treatment was too painful for the author to bear.
C. Because she couldn't help the doctors with her medical knowledge.
D. Because the care given to her brother was far below her expectations.
33.The author changed her opinion after she_______.
A. suffered a serious illness
B. met Stanley's doctors again
C. communicated with her classmates
D. experienced caring for cancer patients directly
34.What did the author do after he brother died
A. She put in efforts o save patients.
B. She gave up her study in medicine.
C. She applied for a job in a big city immediately.
D. She took a year out and then got a job in a clinic.
35.The author wrote this passage in order to______.
A. give advice on how to be a professional doctor
B. explain how her attitude to being a caregiver changed.
C. tell the young people the importance of being a doctor.
D. share how she became a doctor after her brother's death
