An English Handwriting Competition
An English handwriting competition was held in our school last Friday in order to improve the students’ handwriting,
As is required, each student must complete the handwriting task within the given time. Two hours later, outstanding students accepted prizes with pride from our headmaster, which encouraged us greatly. Besides, seeing the best works posted in the school, the students realized the importance of good handwriting.
In a word, the competition is so successful that it will make us improve our handwriting actively.

Then a sharp turning suddenly came into view. I knew I had to stop, but I was moving too fast to control myself. I tried everything, but in vain. I had to fall over and over. After rolling for a while, I lay still finally, head dizzy. Worse still, my joints were painful and every muscle hurt. When I struggled to my feet, the terrible truth hit me: I still had half way down the mountain!
I was on the point of crying when I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Lindsay. “I have to quit,” I said hopelessly. Pointing to some skillful skiers, Lindsay said, “Look, they are skiing so easily. Come on, I believe we can make it, too.” Looking at her determined expression, I was inspired and seconds later we were both skiing down the slope. Along the way there were a few more falls, but we were not defeated. At the bottom, I glanced up the mountain and felt proud. Thanks to Lindsay’s encouragement.2021-2022学年度第一学期期末考试

Although onions taste delicious, watering eyes come with the process when you cut them up. Thankfully, Good Housekeeping has suggested some tips to prevent yourself from crying while trying to cut up an onion.
According to the findings from the Institute, putting onions in a fridge 30 minutes before cutting can prevent the annoying hurt, as the cold stops tear-jerking (催泪的)gas from being produced.
Another way to reduce the gas released by the onion is to put it in water for a while. Good Housekeeping recommends: "Cut the end off the onion and then put it straight into a bowl of water. The water will draw out the acid making you tear up less when you cut it.”
When an onion grows, it mixes with sulfur (硫)in the soil to create a special mineral acid. When the onion is cut into pieces, it reacts and creates a gas. As it reaches your face, this annoying gas causes the eyes to produce tears.
The root is where the gases are most concentrated, so it is recommended that this part of the onion be left on as you cut it to avoid uncomfortable eyes. Do this by cutting the vegetable in half down the middle to create a flat surface. Then, place the onion with its flat surface down and cut it towards the root.
Also, to reduce the gas's effect on your eyes, cut it next to a window or near a fan so the gas is blown away from your face. And take care to use a sharp knife; this will make it easier to move through the vegetable, causing fewer cells to be broken and less gas to be produced as a result.
24. Putting onions in a fridge before cutting can .
A. change its taste B. make it easier to cut up
C. avoid the appearing of the gas D. help the gases mix more quickly
25. From the fourth paragraph, what happens when the onion is cut up
A. Some acid mineral is lost. B. The tear mixture is created.
C. The sulfur inside it pours out. D. A chemical reaction produces a gas.
26. Where is this passage most probably taken from
A. Science Journal. B. Health Programme. C. Fashion Magazine. D. Food Guidebook. 27. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To argue and discuss. B. To examine and analyze (分析).
C. To advise and explain. D. To present and compare.

It's likely that you don't think you've invited a spy into your home when setting up a new TV. But new Samsung, LG, and Vizio smart TVs can document and share everything that's viewed, whether it's a broadcast or something streaming from the Internet. And some smart TVs can even track what DVD you're watching.
Your viewing habits are valuable information for marketers who might want to use the information to advertise new shows and products, offer extra content on shows you want to watch. The advertisements are like the ones you see on your computer.
You might not realize that you allowed TVs to collect your viewing habits when you agreed to the long privacy (隐私)policy during setup. With Samsung, there are 47 screens of text. LG and Vizio also ask you to agree to the privacy policy in thousands of words in fine print.
When Consumer Reports emailed the makers to ask how they are using the technology, managers of Samsung and Vizio didn't say anything. An LG manager said that the company isn't using any data to send personalized ads and has no plans to do so. But Consumer Reports says that could change at any time.
You might think, “How can I turn those advertisements off " It's not always so easy. To stop tracking, you have to fight your way through menu settings. On an LG set, go to settings, then options, then Live plus, click off, then close. With Vizio, it's like a long tour through three menus to turn off the advertisements. With Samsung, it's a similar trip to find the box “SyncPlus and Marketing” to disable it.
Consumer Reports says that cancelling the marketing (营销)feature may cause you to lose some extra services from makers, but it's more important to protect your privacy.
32. What does the underlined word “document" mean in paragraph 1
A. exploring. B. defending. C. recording. D. learning.
33. What will the marketers use customers' viewing habits to do
A. Advertise new shows and products. B. Improve the quality of smart TVs.
C. Collect some suggestions about shows. D. Build a good relationship with customers.
34. How does Consumer Reports think of what the LG manager said
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Confident. D. Believable.
35. What's the main idea of paragraph 5
A. How we learn to use TVs' settings.
B. How we can get more shows from TV.
C. How we send personal information to others,
D. How we stop advertisements from appearing on the screen.

I was packed and ready to go skiing for the first time. It felt like I was about to take an adventure with the world at my feet. Feeling empowered, I knew something brilliant was going to come out of the trip. I was more than excited at the thought of spending an entire week with my best friend, Lindsay, hanging out and enjoying winter.
Early Monday morning my youth group boarded our bus for the ski trip. Once at the destination, we saw the skiers floating so easily and gracefully down the slopes (斜坡).By the time I got my skis and boots, I was confident I'd be a fantastic skier. During the lessons, I mastered the art of skiing within 30 minutes. After spending most of the time practicing again and again on the run for beginners, we were able to fly down the hill by the end of the day. In the evening, we all felt extremely plaining about the pain our ski boots had caused, Lindsay and I decided we weren't skiing the next day. Well, of course, our friends wouldn't hear of that.
So, the next morning we found ourselves in line for the ski lift, which wound its way up the high mountain. Lindsay and I stared helplessly at each other, our eyes showing nothing but fear. After I got into the lift, I sat totally still on the chair with my eyes closely shut, not daring to look outside. The lift rose so fast that before I knew it, I had floated up the mountain. When I finally opened my eyes, I found myself at the top in one piece. Thank goodness I was still alive!
Standing at the top of the long slope, with the skis pointing downward, I realized I was shaking. I glanced at Lindsay and found that she was scared too, for her poles kept tapping rapidly against the sides of her boots.
Taking a deep breath and gathering all our courage, we gave each other an encouraging nod and both took off. At first I barely moved, but slowly I allowed myself to gain some speed. Soon I was shooting down the mountain with my heart beating wildly.
Then a sharp turning suddenly came into view.
