Human activity is changing the surface and temperature of the planet. But new research shows it is also changing the sound of the Earth’s oceans and seas. Scientists say the changes in the sounds of our oceans, seas, and other waterways affect many marine animals (海洋生物) —from very small shrimp to huge whales.
Sound travels “very far underwater,” Francis Juanes told the Associated Press. Juanes is an ecologist at the University of Victoria in Canada. “For fish,” he explained,“sound is probably a better way to sense their environment than light.”
Sounds help fish and other marine animals survive. They use sounds to communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters. Many ocean animals use sounds to find good places to mate.
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise is corning from shipping traffic, motorized fishing ships, underwater oil and gas exploration, offshore construction and other noisy human activities. “For many marine animals, their attempts to communicate are being blocked by sounds that humans have introduced,” said Juanes.
Experts at NOAA say that effects of noise on marine mammals are not well understood. However, some studies suggest that noise may cause hearing loss. The stress from human noise might also affect the immune (免疫) system—an animal’s natural defense system.
“When people think of threats facing the ocean,” said Joe Roman, a marine ecologist at the University of Vermont, “we often think of climate change, plastics, and overfishing. But noise pollution is another vital thing we need to be monitoring.” “If you make something for the ocean,” Joe Roman suggested,“think about how to make it quieter. In theory (理论),you can reduce or turn off sound immediately. It’s not like plastics or climate change, which are much harder to get rid of.”
4. Why is sound important for ocean animals
A. It makes them travel far in the sea.
B. It guides them to find their mates.
C. It helps them locate food and avoid danger.
D. It keeps them stay away from offshore construction.
5. What does the underlined word “blocked” in paragraph 4 mean
A. prevented B. destroyed C. caused D. monitored
6. What can we infer about Joe Roman’s opinion
A. Marine animals are being monitored.
B. People pay equal attention to noise pollution.
C. Noise pollution is theoretically easier to deal with.
D. Plastics is the most serious threat for ocean animals.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Sound Is Important to Ocean Life. B. The Future of Oceans Exploration.
C. The Changes in the Sounds of Oceans. D. Humans Are Making Oceans Too Noisy.
C
Now, let’s talk about earthquakes on our planet. Some countries have large numbers of earthquakes. Japan is one of them. Others do not have many. For example, there are few earthquakes in Britain. There is often a great noise during an earthquake. The ground vibrates (震动). Houses fall down. Trains run off the lines. Sometimes, there is a heavy loss of human lives.
Earthquakes often happen near volcanoes, but this is not always true. The centers of some earthquakes are under the sea. The bottom of the sea suddenly moves. The powerful forces inside the earth break the rocks. The coast is shaken and great waves appear. These waves, also known as seismic waves(地震波), or tsunamis(海啸) can travel long distances and rush over the land when they reach it. They are strong enough to break down houses and other buildings. Very often fires follow the most serious earthquakes. In 1906, the numbers of fires were burning in the city. The water pipes were also shaken and broken, so it was not possible to put the fire out. There was no water. The Tokyo Earthquake of 1923 happened just before noon. People were cooking meals on their fires at that time. When the ground shook, the fires shook, too. Hot materials were thrown on the different parts of the houses, some of which were made of wood. Soon 134 fires were burning in the city.
What kind of building stands up best in an earthquake A building with concrete walls is perhaps the best. A steel frame will make it even stronger. The frame holds the different parts together and the walls so not easily fall. There is less chance of fire because concrete and steel do not burn. Over the years, scientists studied the results of the earthquake in different parts of the world, and they are convinced that this kind of building is the safest.
8. What can we know about earthquake from the first paragraph
A. Britain has large numbers of earthquake.
B. There is often a great noise during an earthquake.
C. There is a heavy loss of human lives in every earthquake.
D. Trains will not run off the lines during the earthquake.
9. Some of the undersea earthquakes were caused by ______.
A. the breakout of the volcano B. the seismic waves
C. the tsunami D. the powerful forces inside the earth
10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. A building with concrete walls and a steel frame stands up best in an earthquake.
B. There is no chance of fire in a building with concrete walls.
C. Scientist studied the causes of the earthquake to get the conclusion.
D. A steel frame has no help in making the house stronger.
11. This text is probably a ______.
A. book review B. popular science report
C. newspaper ad D. fairy tale
D
“You know, the soft subjects,” says the boy in maths. “The easy ones: the stupid girls at the bottom take them. Like dance. It shouldn’t even be a subject. ” We’re choosing subjects for our A-level taster day at school. I see the raised eyebrows (眉毛) when I explain two of my GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) choices are dance and drama(戏剧).
I was told by advisers that dance and drama wouldn’t help me to get a suitable career. My friends told me I’d get bored of dance and switch to science within the first month.
But taking GCSE dance was the best decision I ever made. Dance gives me something to pour my head and heart into. It gives me a feeling of belonging, creativity, security and freedom.
The education secretary Nicky Morgan has put emphasis on (强调) science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), saying that students who focus on the arts risk their careers. Stopping young people from expressing themselves at such a young age is not doing them any favours. Perhaps Nicky Morgan has forgotten to open the door of having a drive to study that subject day in, day out. It shouldn’t matter what that subject is.
I don’t doubt the influence that STEM subjects can have on the people that love them. But to force children into one field is cruel. As much as I try, I’m not good at and don’t love physics, biology or maths. I don’t want a career in these areas.
There has been a decrease in the number of state schools offering arts subjects taught by specialist teachers. I can’t even imagine how it feels to be told that you don't teach a “real subject” by an 8-year-old boy.
To the teachers, the parents, the government I say: Let children make their own decisions. Let them live in the present. Let them have a real, unlimited education.
12. How does the boy in maths feel about dance
A. Useless. B. Difficult. C. Beautiful. D. Important.
13. After the author took GCSE dance, she ________
A. lost interest in it B. kept her mind on it
C. turned to other subjects D. struggled with Her lessons
14. What do we know about Nicky Morgan
A. She encourages students to learn soft subjects.
B. She suggests students take a risk in their careers..
C. She underlines the importance of STEM subjects.
D. She allows students to express themselves freely.
15. What’s the present situation of arts subjects
A. They attract much attention worldwide.
B. They are taught by non-professionals.
C. They are considered less important.
D. They have made great progress.

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. C
