An Exciting Tug-of-war
The afternoon of last Friday witnessed a grand event in our school playground—an
exciting Tug-of-war, which turned out to be a great success.
As soon as the referee blew the whistle, both teams started pulling the rope into their
territory. At first, they were both matched within the first 40 seconds with all their might,
which let all ardent supporters hold their breath. Then came the decisive moment when 10
warriors from different classes made a dead pull to defeat their opponents. The
playground boiled with thunderous cheers.
The activity was so rewarding and fruitful that it not only enriched students’
extracurricular life, but also cultivated our team spirit and perseverance.

Alarm bells started to ring in my head. I tapped the man on the shoulder and told
him to stop. He leaned forward and went at high speed now. Then he slowed down to turn
into a dark and narrow road. I had had enough. I jumped off the vehicle and fell onto the
ground. The man turned around and rode towards me. I swung my school bag at him and
he lost his balance and fell off his motorcycle. Without looking back, I just ran and ran
until I found that I was on a properly tarred road. Cars were passing by. I was relieved to
get into a taxi. I was shaking uncontrollably. 第一段写如何摆脱坏人自救
When my family learned what had happened, they were horrified. My mother’s
face paled. My father told me that I should have just looked for a public phone and called
home when I was lost. Looking back on the terrible scene, I felt shivers down my spine. I
knew I had been foolish. It was a frightening experience that I hoped would never happen
to me again. It’s better to be safe than sorry! 第二段写此次经历的感悟和从中吸
取的经验教训

W: I know little about that, but I get the hang of playing the violin.
(Text 2)

W: Sorry. I promised to go to a classical concert with my sister.
M:What about Thursday then
W: But I have a job interview on Friday morning. I guess I have to prepare for it.
(Text 3)
M: Hello, Linda, this is Jack. Can you pick up our daughter today I have to work
overtime.
W: I’m meeting her now at the school gate, and we will be home soon.

W: Is there room for that box up there
M: I can fit it in the trunk. And this suitcase should fit in the back seat.
(Text 6)
M: So, everyone’s got free membership for a month at the new sports club. We must take
advantage of it.
W: They’re having a long-distance run through the town to advertise the club. That
could be fun. We might win a prize, and it’d be good for getting fit. (7)
M: Yeah, also there’s a climbing wall, and the club’s organizing a trip to the mountains,
to teach rock-climbing. I’d love that.
W: Hmm.
M: Or cycling. There’s great indoor cycling track to train for racing.
5
W: I haven’t got a bicycle good enough for that.
M: Well then, we’ll go with your suggestion. (7)
(Text7)

really happened. (8)
M: That’s not quite true. Stan Bailey was there, too.
W: Oh, was he I didn’t know that.
M: Well, actually, he was there all the time. I think he saw enough to be able to give some
valuable information about the matter.
W: Do you think I should call him Would he be willing to help

you are finished with meeting with Mr. Wang
M: I’m not sure because Mr. Wang will probably want to take me around the factory
site on the day I arrive there. (10)(11) I’m hoping that I will be able to see my friend the
day after, but he mentioned that he might have to leave town that day. He said he would
try to rearrange his trip.
W: You should just take your vacation early and spend a week there after you take
care of your business.(10) (12) It’s not like you get travel to the Far East all the time,
you know.
(Text 9)

the problem

W: Well, it just doesn’t play songs. (14)
M: Are you sure you have followed the instructions carefully
W: Yes. And I had lent it to my brother, but he returned it to me a week ago. It was
working well until last week.
M: Did you drop it on the ground or in water
W: No. I’ve been very careful with it.

(Text 10)
M: Right, so here we are in Fairhaven. (17) And we’re visiting Fairhaven because of
its historical links with a man called Manjiro Nakahama. So I’ll begin by giving you
a brief introduction to his life, and then you can take your time to explore the town.
(17)(18)
Manjiro Nakahama was born in 1827 in a village by the sea in Tosashimizu, Japan. And
like many people in that town, he became a fisherman when he was young. One day in
1841, he and some others were fishing far off the coast of Japan when they were caught in
a storm. He was rescued by an American whale ship. And Manjiro became friends with
the captain, William Whitfield, who came from the town of Fairhaven. That is where we
are now. He chose to remain aboard, and to come with the boat to the USA. (19) So
Manjiro became the first Japanese to set foot on American soil. He studied Mathematics
and Geography as well as shipbuilding in Fairhaven. But he missed his mother, and his
own country. Eventually in 1851 he went back to Japan where he had a responsible
position as a university teacher. He also served an invaluable role as an interpreter to
build up and improve the relationship between Japan and the United States. Tosashimizu
and Fairhaven now have the official status of sister cities. In Fairhaven there have been a
number of visits by the people of Tosashimizu, in particular at the time of the Festival,
7
which is held every two years to celebrate the life and achievements of Manjiro.(20) It
takes place in the fall, and there's an ever-growing programme including drumming,
singing, and small open shops selling Japanese and American food. So if you're going to
be in the area around then, it’s really worth a visit. (17)
