On 4 May, Headley Court, a former military(军事)site in Surrey, England, was transformed into the Seacole Center-a temporary hospital for people recovering from COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus. It is named after the nurse Mary Seacole in recognition of her contribution to medicine.
Seacole was born in Jamaica(牙买加)in 1805. Her mother ran a hotel where people could receive medical care and Seacole learnt a lot about nursing from her. An eager traveler, Seacole learnt more about new medicines and treatments as she journeyed across the world.
During the Crimean War(1853-1856), Seacole wanted to join a group of nurses, led by Florence Nightingale, who were going to Crimea to treat British soldiers. The Crimean War was an international conflict fought between Britain, France and Turkey on one side, and Russia on the other. However, Seacole’s request to join was rejected. She believed this was possibly because of racism(种族主义)which is when people are treated badly or unfairly because of their race.
Instead, Seacole went to Crimea by herself and set up the British Hotel, which was a place where soldiers could go to receive treatment. Among these soldiers she became known as “Mother Seacole” because of how well she looked after them.
After the war, Seacole fell ill and didn’t have much money. To assist her, people put on a festival in her honor in 1857. Seacole also published a book about her life, called Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands, before she died in 1881 in London. Over the years, people have campaigned for Seacole’s story to be more widely told.
Although the Seacole Center is only a temporary hospital, it is hoped that this might lead to more awareness of her achievements.

The loss of natural land isn’t just a problem for the Amazon or the rainforests of Southeast Asia. The United States is losing its forests, grasslands, wetlands, and deserts at a truly startling pace.
Between 2001 and 2017, some 97,124 square kilometers of natural land-around the size of Indiana-were destroyed in the US to make way for roads, industry, farms, and other signs of human civilization. That’s equal to a football field-sized piece of land being lost every 30 seconds. Some of the most serious losses have been experienced in the South and Midwest, where human development took over 47 percent and 59 percent of all land area, respectively, in the 16 years studied.
These findings come from a report published by The Center for American Progress Using available satellite data and open-source databases, they calculated the rate of loss of natural lands and its relationship to oil and gas extraction(开采), road construction, urban development, agriculture, and other human-related activities. If national trends continue, a South Dakota-sized expanse of forests, wetlands, and wild places in the continental United States will disappear by 2050.
Now only 12 percent of the country’s land area has been conserved as national parks, wilderness areas, national monuments, or other protected areas, while 26 percent of ocean area is safeguarded from oil and gas extraction. According to this report, it’s now time to extend this level of protection even further. Keeping in line with present scientific recommendations, they conclude that the US should aim to protect at least 30 percent of lands and oceans in a natural state by 2030.
However, it isn’t all about desperation. The authors conclude on a remarkably optimistic note(well, relatively optimistic for an environmental report, at least). “The United States is entering new times when it will rely more than ever on the integrity(完整)and stability of the natural world to provide economic boom, safeguard the health of communities, and weather(平安渡过)the effects of a changing climate,” they write.
28. What does the underlined word “startling” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Slow. B. Steady. C. Fixed. D. Astonishing.
29. What is the new report based on

B. The history of human civilization.

D. Comparison of America’s past and present natural land.
30. Which of the following should be US’s goal by 2030
A. To protect all America’s forests and wetlands.
B. To protect at least 30% of America’s lands and oceans.
C. To protect 12 percent of America’s land area.
D. To protect 26 percent of America’s ocean area.
31. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text
A. To appeal to people to protect forest and natural land.
B. To present the problems faced by the Amazon.
C. To state the necessity of building national parks.
D. To criticize some practices of the US government.

Keeping food fresh without refrigeration is near impossible in the hot climate of sub-Saharan Africa. But it’s hard to power fridges in a region where almost 600 million people live off the grid(电网).
That’s where Brazil’s Youmma comes in. The company has developed a pay-as-you-go(预付费的)solar-powered fridge that is being bought by small business owners. The fridges help to reduce food waste, store medicine safely, and allow shops to keep products fresh for longer, says André Morriesen, research and development manager at Nidec Global Appliance, which owns Youmma.
The cooling system of the small 100-liter fridge has been designed for off-grid use, and it consumes a quarter of the energy of a regular fridge, according to Nidec. That means it can be powered by a smaller solar panel and a smaller battery, reducing costs. The battery can keep the fridge running for a day and a half without sunlight.
Customers pay for the fridge in daily installments(分期付款)via cell phones, through M-Kopa, a Kenyan solar energy company. New M-Kopa customers pay a $100 deposit. Daily payments range from $1 to $1.50 for a package that includes solar lighting and covers the installation(安装)of a rooftop solar panel. M-Kopa says it costs more than a conventional fridge but the package includes lighting as well as continued access to free off-the-grid energy.
Pay-as-you-go “is useful for rural households or businesses with an uneven cash flow such as income based on harvesting seasons”, says Teresa Le, a climate change and energy specialist for the UN Development Program.
However, even when paired with pay-as-you-go systems like M-Kopa’s, solar fridges are still costly for the average person and that’s why they mostly appeal to small businesses, says Le. Of about 2,000 fridges sold since Youmma launched it in 2019, around 80% were to small businesses.
Kioko Mwange runs a small shop in the village of Kithungo, eastern Kenya. Since signing up for the Youmma fridge he has increased his sales. “It helps me preserve milk for up to 10 days,” says Mwange. “I have seen an increase in customers.” Morriesen believes the fridge can be a “life-changing product” for rural families and “bring freedom to women” who often spend hours each day walking to food markets.
32. What can we know about the solar fridge
A. It is meant for off-grid use. B. It can’t work without sunlight.
C. It is popular with average person. D. It costs less than a traditional fridge
33. Who are more likely to buy the solar fridge in Africa
A. Big companies. B. Energy specialists.
C. Small business owners. D. Rich women in big cities.
34. What’s Kioko Mwange’s attitude to the solar fridge
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Negative. D. Disappointed.
35. What’s the best title of the text
A. Technological Progress in Africa B. Most People Live Off the Grid in Africa
C. How to Keep Food Fresh in Hot Weather D. The Solar Fridge Improves People’s Lives

When I was a kid, my father, was a car lover. He was a member of the Toronto Modified Car Club in the 1950s and early 1960s. In 1979, we moved from Toronto to Los Angeles. We had to sell pretty much everything, our cars, our furniture. We flew out to L.A., and the next day, my dad walked to a used car lot and bought a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. He painted the wheels the same color as the car’s body. That was our family car and our only car, all through the 1980s.
In the 1990s, my dad got a company car. The Oldsmobile sat in the garage and started to get ignored. I became a car guy and got a 1969 Mustang when I was 21. I tore it apart, rebuilt the engine.
There were a bunch of other cars I worked on, all Ford and Shelby stuff, and I built a number of car-themed guitars, with Shelby colors and configurations(配置). But I always loved the Oldsmobile. I would wash it every now and then, and start it up.
Around 2012, my father threw out the idea of getting rid of the Oldsmobile because he did not like to see it decaying(衰败). I said, “No way. Why don’t you let me play around with it ” I drove the car home and dove in.
I had worked on so many cars, but never any General Motors products. Mustangs were easy to tear down; you could do it in a couple days. But this Oldsmobile had so many small pieces. It took a long time to take apart. I sent some parts of the car to a guy in New Jersey to be rebuilt. I got the seats changed and I had a paint guy do the paint. But the rest of it I did myself. Along the way, my father would ask how it was going. I would downplay it, “It’s going really slow.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I finally got it all together, and it happened to be Father’s Day.When we got to the restaurant, I had my friend hiding in the bushes with cameras.

第一节
One possible version:
Dear Mike,
How is everything going I’ve been occupied with the preparation for a speech in my English class, whose theme is about British novels and I badly need your help to recommend a website to me.
The website should focus on British novels, which exposes readers to classic British novels with their authors and creation background included. Also texts about some famous chapters with relevant pictures and videos are preferred. Of course, what’s on the website is expected to be easily accessible and downloaded.
Thanks in advance and I’m looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
I finally got it all together, and it happened to be Father’s Day. I took the car to a very popular restaurant in L.A. I parked it, then went to pick up my parents in another car to take them out for a Father’s Day dinner. I told them I had to stop at the restaurant to see somebody and that they could walk around and see the cars.
When we got to the restaurant, I had my friend hiding in the bushes with cameras. When my mom saw the car, she just lost in it. When my father saw it, he could not say a word. He just walked around it, touching it. My parents were surprised to see their 1970 Oldsmobile as good as new. My friend captured their amazed expressions on their face using the camera. For me, I had seen the process over two and a half years. However my father had not seen the car in all that time. It was a great moment. I said to my father, “This will last you another 40-plus years.”

W:So why do you love street dance so much
M:I like the music and I can use steps from ballet or Latin dance.
W:So the dance moves depend on you.
M:Yes. It allows me to show my personal dance style.
W:Sounds great! Our magazine is planning to publish some articles about different kinds of street dance, such as breaking and locking.
M:I think you can go with me to the competition and interview some dancers.
W:It’s a great idea. Let’s go.

M:Angela, what made you decide to fly around the world in a helicopter
W:I’m 57 now! I’m sorry I didn’t do this wonderful thing many years ago. Actually, the main purpose in doing this was to collect $500, 000 for sick children by getting different companies to pay us money for each kilometer that we flew.
M:And what about preparing for the trip
W:Well, it took five months to plan. I made the trip three years ago with my teacher who taught me to fly.
M:And what was the trip like
W:It was really exciting flying over so many different countries. But we weren’t able to spend much time sightseeing because we only stopped to get water and camp. We had to spend two days in Thailand because of an engine problem, and that was the longest time we spent in a certain place. But the trip was worth our time and effort.

M:Sarah, you said you wanted some information about jobs.
W:Yes, I need some help to decide on my major in the university.
M:OK, now first what subject do you like best
W:Well, I am good at science, but I’m interested in maths and art most.
M:That’s quite unusual for a girl. And what do you do in your free time
W:I go to the cinema a lot-I love films. And sometimes I make videos for our school television station.
M:Oh, really
W:Yes, I take a course to learn how to edit videos digitally. I work and play on the computer as much as I can.
M:Well, maybe you can try to be a graphic designer.
W:What’s that
M:Well, it’s someone who creates pictures on a computer for... well, anything. For example, advertisements, Internet sites, computer games, films...
W:That sounds great. What should I do next
M:First, I suggest you go to the school library and find out which universities have computer graphics.
W:Great. I’ll do that now. Thanks, David.

Are you interested in finding more about the stars and planets in the night sky Then come and join the Tracker Star-Watching Center. We hold popular star-watching sessions almost every night of the year from 6:00 to 10:00.
The Center runs entirely on the money given by the public. So although there’s no actual charge for your tickets, we’re always grateful when you choose to give us some money.
During our evening sessions, you’ll first see a documentary that tells you all about the history of the Center and all the star-watching programs that we run there. Then you’ll move outside where several special telescopes are set up for you to see the stars. Our expert staff will manage all the equipment and in the evening, they will help you to see the most interesting objects.
We’re halfway up Mintal Mountain, and the view of the night sky is clear and bright. But you should note that we often experience freezing night-time temperatures, so you need to make some preparations in advance.
