After finishing his dinner, Lin Xu opened a WeChat mini-program called “Clear Plate” on his phone and took picture of the empty plates. He was then awarded 157 credit points after the image was uploaded and recognized by artificial intelligence.
“Users of the app can use their credit to buy gifts, such as books and cellphones to purchase charity meals donated to children in poor rural areas,”Lin said.
A nationwide “Clear Your Plate” campaign is gaining steam online. Efforts to stop food waste and promote thrift are also being made by restaurants that have been urged to create an environment in which consumers are reminded not to waste food. They are also encouraged to offer different portion sizes so that customers can have more choices.
The“Clear Plate” mini-program has become popular among young Chinese and currently has nearly 1 million users.
Liu Jichen, founder of the startup that developed the app, said that the idea popped up at a dinner in 2017, when Liu found that a restaurant would give diners who polished off their food a card and offer small gifts after a certain number of cards had been collected.
“Such an idea can be realized online,” Liu said. He formed a team to work on the project.
Yet it was quite challenge for the AI system to identify whether the uploaded photos showed empty plates.
To make the AI system smarter, Liu and his team, assisted by more than 1,000 others, spent half a year collecting over 100, 000 samples in canteens and restaurants across the country and used the data to train neural network. Dozens of enterprises, institutions and restaurants have contacted the startup to cooperate on the project.
Through the visualized mini-program, people can clearly see the good results of saving food, which will effectively reduce waste, he noted. “We hope our efforts can start a new trend among the younger generation, encouraging them to carry out the virtue of cherishing food and developing the habit of thrift,” Liu said.
18.What is the main function of the APP “Clear Plate”
A.Awarding credit points. B.Giving charity meals.

Advertising plays a major role in the competitive business world. Many industries take advantage of the power of advertising to attract or to win customers away from their business competitors. The influence of advertising is so huge that it causes many people to buy things that they do not want at the start.
Advertising encourages people to buy things they don’t want through misleading ideas. Advertising is proven to be a successful tool to stress the features of their product to the public even though it is regarded unpopular such as cigarettes, drugs, alcohol and so on. For example, Dunhill, a cigarette company which sponsors (赞助) many football teams, seems to be promoting cigarettes to the public. Without the sponsorship, the company will be less known to the public, resulting in fewer sales of cigarettes.
Besides that, advertising has a large influence on the decisions made by the people in their everyday life. Many businesses use advertising as a form of promotion to create awareness about their product in the market. For instance, in a fast food industry, the introduction of a new flavor of burger needs advertising to reach the public while the other burgers require advertising to increase sales. Children, especially, are easily influenced by the advertisement and will have the desire to dine at fast food restaurants after that. Although fast food is bad for health, it has successfully become attractive to the public through advertising.
However, advertising plays a part in helping customers to compare a product in terms of price, quality, reliability and so on. Without advertising, it will be very difficult for customers to judge the worthiness of a product. For example, advertisements published by various companies have given the customers the opportunity to choose wisely when buying an item. Without the power of advertising, customers will choose a brand (品牌) which may not offer the best choice.
22.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.Advertising. B.The product. C.Feature. D.The public.
23.The author mentions the fast food restaurants to show that________.
A.food industry is having a hard time
B.the information passed on in advertisements is unreal
C.children are easily influenced by the advertisement
D.advertisements influence people to make decisions
24.The main idea of Paragraph 4 is that advertising________.
A.plays a role in fast food industry
B.helps industries attract customers
C.encourages people to make the right choices
D.makes people buy some unnecessary things
25.The author’s attitude towards advertising can best be described as________.
A.objective B.supportive
C.uncared D.doubtful

A Pleasant Outing
Last weekend, our class organized an outing in the People’s Park in order to help us get relaxed after the mid-term examination.
Everyone spent a pleasant time together. On the way to the destination, we were so excited that we sang in a loud voice. Upon the arrival of the park, we enjoyed a delicious picnic first and then played interesting games. Later, some girls danced under the trees and some boys even played the guitar, which drew thunderous applause.
The outing not only brought us great pleasure but also relieved us of the pressure caused by the study. Most importantly, it helped to strengthen the relationship among us.
