About a week after Glenda and Raphi Savitz welcomed their daughter Samantha to the world, they learned that she was deaf.
“ Obviously, it was really a surprise and a challenge,” Glenda says.“To communicate with our daughter, we knew that we had to get involved in the deaf community and get immersed in American Sign Language(ASL).” What the new parents didn’t know then was that their neighbors would decide to start learning ASL, too.
The family had moved to their neighborhood just three months earlier. When they moved in, a neighbor stopped by to deliver Glenda a directory (名录)of everyone who lives in the
neighborhood, complete with photos and contact information.
It’s a place where people are serious about being good neighbors. So when Samantha was out with her parents, neighbors like Jill McNeil were really sad that they couldn’t greet the girl with words. Then he thought, “Since she couldn’t learn our language, why don’t we learn hers ”
McNeil and three other neighbors quietly signed up for local adult education classes in ASL.As with any new language, learning ASL takes time. But McNeil says the classes are working.“We know how to say ‘Are you riding your bike ’ or ‘You have pretty new pink sports shoes’.”
The classes have been such a hit that the number of neighbors learning the language reached about 40.“We 're just thankful that we live here and we're surrounded by these wonderful people," Raphi Savitz says. And they 're not the only ones who say they're grateful.
“We are really enjoying the whole process, not only learning ASL, but learning together," says McNeil.“It's made our neighborhood a closer place."

“One person’s trash(废物)is another person’s treasure.” That’s a common expression, but the next time you throw something away, think about a twist on the old saying. What if your trash could become your own treasure Many creative and environmentally minded people have come up with a way to make that happen. It’s called upcycling. Our world would be a better place if everyone would begin upcycling.
Upcycling is the practice of taking an unwanted item and turning it into something useful. For example, how about that pair of jeans with a hole in one knee It could become a new pillow for your bedroom.
Upcycling is not the same as recycling.Upcycling is actually much better for the environment.Recycling takes an item made of glass, paper, metal, or plastic, breaks it down to its base material, and then uses that material to make another product. This requires a great deal of energy. On the other hand, when you choose to upcycle, the only energy you use is your own.And upcycling not only reduces the amount of trash that goes into our landfills, but it also protects natural resources, such as oil and gas.Recycling is good for the environment, but upcycling is even better.
As responsible citizens, we should all be concerned with protecting our environment and our resources.Upcycling is a fun and creative way to help. The next time you go to throw something into the trash can, stop and think about what it could become.Chances are, there’s a brand-new item in your hand just waiting to be upcycled.
Why does the author mention an old saying in the first paragraph
A.To lead in the topic of upcycling.
B.To show the advantage of upcycling.
C.To stress the importance of upcycling.
D.To raise reader’s awareness of upcycling.
29.Which one below belongs to upcycling
A.Old cloth is made into a bag.
B.Old tin cans are transported to landfill.
C.A broken wooden door is cut into pieces.
D.An old ladder is transformed into a bookshelf.

A.Upcycling is much more useful. B.Recycling is much more achievable.
C.Recycling is much more eco-friendly. D.Upcycling is much more energy-saving.
31.What can be inferred from the text
A.Upcycling is popular at present. B.Upcycling is replacing recycling.
C.Upcycling is worth recommending. D.Upcycling is traditional in daily life.
D
One of the simplest way to increase our happiness, according to science, is to take part in acts or kindness towards others.Recent studies have found that young children show greater happiness when they are sharing a tasty treat than when they are receiving the treat.
This doesn't just work with children.Adults feel happier when they engage in prosocial (利社会的)spending. For instance, one study found that the more people spent on others during a typical month (in the form of gift and charity donations), the greater they reported happiness.
What if you don't have money to give away No worries, time is just as effective.Research shows that people feel happier when they freely give away their time at the service of others. For example,an examination of over 17 studies on over 74,000 participants found volunteers had significantly greater life satisfaction and lower rates of depression than non-volunteers.This pattern has been found in over 130 countries and leads to happiness regardless of whether those countries are rich or poor.
So why does giving to others increase our happiness There are lots of psychological theories out there, but the reason might be more basic.Neuroimaging(神经影像)studies have found that giving activate(激活)the reward centers of our brain, suggesting our brains are wired to serve.
If you are able to volunteer or donate to a charitable organization, that's great.Do it.But this might be too much for some.No worries! You can add smaller acts of kindness to your daily
routine. The idea behind it is if you treat others the way a happy person might do, you will end
up being a happy person yourself.
32.What conclusion might be made from the first two paragraphs
A.A tasty meal contributes to one's happiness.
B.Acts of kindness benefit the giver's happiness.
C.Prosocial spending is a typical activity for adults.
D.Rich people are somewhat happier during a typical month.
33.What does “this pattern” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.Donating money to charity. B.Volunteering to help people in need.
C.Living with happier people. D.Taking part in studies about happiness.
34.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4
A.Add the latest information.
B.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
C.Introduce a new study for discussion.
D.Provide scientific basis for the conclusion.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Effects of Self-happiness B.A Good Way to Enjoy Life

What’s the key to perseverance(坚持) Putting one foot in front of the other will make you reach the finish line, and there are tools you can use to help you face down challenges, meet your goals and truly enjoy the process, rather than just getting by. 36 Below are a few ways that help to increase your determination to keep moving forward.
Know what you want.Maybe your goal is small. 37 Or maybe it’s a big goal, like aiming to be a happier person.Either way, the path toward meeting your goals will be much clearer if you know what you really want.
38 The first challenge you likely meet is improving your self-confidence. It’s really difficult to make progress unless you believe you’re capable of persevering. However unachievable your goals may seem now, you have the intelligence and power to make it.
Face reality.Having the ability to face life’s challenges is a big advantage. 39 When a big problem appears, it’s so much easier to give it up or put off making a decision.Practice seeing challenges for what they are so you can figure out the best way around, over or through them.
Learn from your mistakes. You won’t always find your way on the first try.Wisdom is gained by making lots of mistakes and trying something different the next time around.Think about what has happened. 40
Get rid of self-doubt.
B.Make your choices carefully.
C.But it can be really difficult to do.

One possible version
Dear fellow students,
Recently, our campus saw a phenomenon that there are some unhealthy living habits among students—eating too much junk food, staying up late and lacking sports—to name a few, which should be brought to the attention of all the students.
As is known to all, good health is the best wealth, and it is the basis of efficient study and other activities. Without health, one can achieve nothing. To keep healthy, it is necessary for us to form some good habits. First, we should go to bed early at night to have adequate rest. Besides, a proper amount of physical exercise is of great importance. What’s more, keeping a balanced diet can also benefit us a lot.
Every small step counts! On behalf of the student union, I would like to call for every one of us to keep a healthy lifestyle. However busy we are, remember to take good care of ourselves.
Yours,
Li Hua

M: Good. But I really don’t have time to make a decision now. You have to fill in this application form first and then I’ll check it later. I’ll give you a reply tomorrow.
W: Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it.
M: My pleasure.

Welcome to English Studies! All right, let me tell you what is happening today. From 9 am until 10:30 am, you’ll do some tests. These help us decide your level. After you’ve done the tests, at about 10:30, you can have a break. After the break at about 10:45, Rebecca will be waiting for you in reception to give you your books. At 11:00, please come back here to the Learning Center, and Steve, the manager, will give you an introduction to the Learning Center. At 11:30 you will meet Carol. Carol will talk to you about the social program at English Studies. Then at midday, I’ll give you your timetables — your personal timetables that will tell you your classes and your teachers and rooms. After that, you can have lunch. During lunch, Helen will be in her office if any of you have problems. Then, this afternoon, you could either listen to a lecture about London or you could join a conversation class if you are already familiar with London.
