Before the USSR sent the Sputnik 1 to orbit Earth in 1957, and Yuri Gagarin into space in 1961, space exploration was just a dream. After American astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon in 1969, making “one giant leap for mankind” and many more achievements, came
accidents when all the astronauts on the USSR’s Soyuz 11 and America’s Challenger died during
their missions. Despite the sadness, space exploration continued, the International Space Station
on which astronauts from different countries work together being a good example. China became
the third country to independently send humans into space in 2003 when Yang Liwei orbited Earth
in Shenzhou 5, followed by further Shenzhou missions and vehicles to explore the moon, Jade
Rabbit and Chang’e 4. Europe, the US and China plan to explore planets like Mars and Jupiter. Through space exploration, scientists hope to understand how the universe began and how to
survive well into the future.
