16. The skin on your hands and feet is noticeably different from that on most other areas of your body. Unlike those other areas, the skin on your palms and soles doesn’t have hair. And when you bathe in water, most of your skin looks normal while your hands and feet wind up looking like wrinkled(有皱纹的) prunes.
Another way in which your hands and feet are different is that both the palms and soles have unique patterns of ridges, also called fingerprints and footprints. The middle layer of skin connects to the epidermal(表皮的) layer through many papillae, which are tiny fingerlike projections(突起) of connective tissue. Fingerprints and footprints have purposes other than helping experts to solve crimes ; they help you to grab on to objects, and they help to keep your skin from being torn.
In addition to lacking hair and having ridges, the skin on your hands and feet is also thicker. With all the tasks these body parts have to perform, such as walking or picking things up, they tend to get a lot of use. As a result, the thicker, hairless skin allows them to bear more friction(摩擦) without getting damaged. Part of that extra thickness is caused by a kind of protein, which gets nutrients in deeper layers of the skin but forms a surface layer of dead cells on the epidermis. This extra thickness may also explain why your hands and feet become wrinkled when you bathe in the water. The dead protein cells absorb the water so that the thin surface layer of skin expands and then wrinkles.

2.Why can the fingerprints and footprints help solve crimes
A.They are not easy to tear. B.They have unique patterns.
C.They help grab on to objects. D.They are fingerlike by nature.
3.What makes your hands and feet wrinkled in the water
A.The shortage of protein cells. B.The lack of hair on the surface.
C.The damage of the deeper layer of skin. D.The expanding of the surface layer of skin.
1.答案:being killed
2.答案:when
be doing sth. when..."
3.答案:in
be used to doing sth.
5.答案:to reward
8.答案:on
feed on意为"以……
9.答案:No sooner had we gathered
We had no sooner gathered on the sports ground for a football gamethan it began to rain。
10.答案:Not until he went through hardship did he realize
He didn't realize the love for families is important until he went through hardship。
11.答案:With you on/in our team
根据汉语可知,宾语是you,用介词短语on/ in our team 作宾补。
12.答案:It was John that/who
解析:本题考査强调句型"It is/was + 被强调部分+ that/who +其他成分"。 It was John that/who。
13.答案:as if nothing had taken place
14.答案:The government rewarded him for saving a drowning child
15.答案:Only when you put all your heart into study will you succeed
Another way in which your hands and feet are different is that both the palms and soles have unique patterns of ridges, also called fingerprints and footprints.
The dead protein cells absorb the water so that the thin surface layer of skin expands and then wrinkles.
