Text 10
Most Americans treat their pets like family members. It means Americans love their pets. And they provide them with a proper home, food, exercise, and medical care.Americans love pets and it is not just puppy love. Sometimes, they add to their interest to their pets with entertaining videos and amusing toys.If they have an eye for fashion, pets' owners can dress their pets in pretty clothes. For special occasions, they can use perfume to make their dogs smell nice or less basely. You might see Americans treat their pets like they treat their children,
sometimes even better. The most common pets in the US are dogs, cats, birds and fish. Pets, such as dogs and cats, make good companions. But in addition to providing good companionship, pets are useful too. For example, dogs guard property, heard cattle and sheep, and lead the blind.Monkeys, unusual pets in the US, will soon become useful pets for disabled persons.Scientists are now training monkeys to help disabled persons do some simple tasks, such as eating, cleaning the house and even changing the channel on the TV set.

Born in Chengdu, Southwest China's Sichuan Province, to a Canadian missionary family in 1915, Crook came into the world. While Isabel Crook's parents were engaged in setting up schools and education institutions in Southwest China, Crook herself was more interested in anthropology (人类学) and the many ethnic minority peoples in China. She was very curious about what was going on around her.
At the age of 23, Crook graduated from a Canadian college with a master's degree and began carrying out field research in Li County of Sichuan Province. In 1947, Crook and her journalist husband were warmly welcomed by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to observe and study the revolutionary land reform taking place in China. In 1948 the couple accepted an invitation from CPC leaders to teach at a newly built foreign affairs school. The school was the forerunner of today's Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), which has seen over 400 ambassadors (大使) and 1,000 counsellors (参赞) walk through its doors. As a teacher at BFSU she laid the foundations for foreign language education in China.
As two of the first three foreign teachers at the school, Isabel and David Crook brought new Western teaching methodologies to the classroom.Michael Crook noted that since some students were extremely poor during the 1950s and 1960s, his parents were especially sensitive to their situation and did what they could to help them while protecting their self esteem. For example, they would bring food such as eggs and bread for picnics and share them with students who brought steamed corn bread.
According to the younger Crook, because of his parents' belief in communism, they chose to use political texts as their teaching materials, such as works once admired by Karl Marx.Understanding that the students would become diplomats representing the People's Republic of China, his parents tried to help students gain knowledge in different fields to better prepare them for communicating with foreigners in English.
On 15 December 2018, Isabel got the award of “The Most Influential Foreigner throughout 40 Years of China's Development” from the Chinese government. On 17 September 2019, Isabel was awarded “the Friendship Medals” by the Chinese government for her lifetime of devotion to China.

For Western designers, China and its rich culture have long been an inspiration for Western creative.
“It's no secret that China has always been a source of inspiration for designers,” says Amanda Hill, chief creative officer at A+E Networks, a global media company and home to some of the biggest fashion shows.
Earlier this year the China Through A Looking Glass exhibition in New York exhibited 140 pieces of China inspired fashionable clothing alongside Chinese works of art, with the aim of exploring the influence of Chinese aesthetics (美学) on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. The exhibition had record attendance, showing that there is huge interest in Chinese influences.
“China is impossible to overlook,” says Hill.“Chinese models are the faces of beauty and fashion campaigns that sell dreams to women all over the world, which means Chinese women are not just consumers of fashion — they are central to its movement.” Of course, not only are today's top Western designers being influenced by China — some of the best designers of contemporary fashion are themselves Chinese.“Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu are taking on Galliano, Albaz, Marc Jacobs — and beating them hands down in design and sales,” adds Hill.
For Hill, it is impossible not to talk about China as the leading player when discussing fashion.“The most famous designers are Chinese, so are the models, and so are the consumers,” she says.“China is no longer just another market; in many senses it has become the market. If you talk about fashion today, you are talking about China — its influences, its direction, its breathtaking clothes, and how young designers and models are finally acknowledging that in many ways.”

A British friend told me he couldn't understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds(嗑瓜子)as a snack so much.“I've met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth; I believe that's from cracking the seeds,” he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware.I realized that whenever I'm watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn't like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door to door on Chinese New Year's Eve to check out what every household was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking.Out in the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, ready made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast.I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don't think it's right to criticize one's choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem.
It's not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food.In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it's a delicacy (美味佳肴), and it's connected to their certain culture.I think it's a wonderful tradition.

Tofu is made from soybeans (黄豆).There are different types of tofu, from soft creamy silken tofu to pressed extra firm tofu. The difference is the amount of water in them. The longer the tofu is pressed, the more water is squeezed out and the tofu becomes denser (更密实) and chewier.
37 In the letter to his friend John Bartram, Franklin cites (引用) a description of a type of Chinese cheese made from soybeans called “teu fu” by Fernandez Navarette who published accounts of his travels to China in the late 1600's.
However, there isn't much documentation of tofu production in the United States. 38
In 1917, as part of an effort to develop new sources of protein for American soldiers during World War Ⅰ, the United States Department of Agriculture sent Chinese born doctor Yamei Kin a dietitian well known for promoting tofu as an nutritious meat alternative, to China to study soybeans. 39
It wasn't until the 1970's that tofu started to become better known, during a wave of interest in vegetarianism (素食主义), natural food, and less wasteful food sources. 40 And the restaurant chain Chipotle successfully added tofu to its menu a few years ago.

第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When a tornado hit a small town nearby, many families were left homeless.Afterward, all the local newspapers carried stories of the families who suffered the hardest to appeal to people's attention and assistance.
One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me.A young woman stood in front of a mobile home, a depressed expression on her face.A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast.Hiding behind her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, wide eyes with confusion and fear. The article below gave clothing sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my seven year old twins, Brad and Brett, and three year old Meghan to help those less fortunate than themselves.
“We have so much. And these poor people now have nothing,” I said.“We'll share what we have with them.” I brought three large boxes down from the room upstairs and
placed them in the living room.Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods. While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. The boys were pleased to join.Bred rose and went to his room fast.He came back bringing his action figures that he played with not so frequently.Brett also jumped up and ran to fetch some of his Matchbox cars and airplane models.Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up abandoned toys.
The boys placed the objects they had chosen to donate into one of the boxes while I filled the third box with clothes.Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, faded, best loved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest.“I'll help you find something for the little girl, too.” I said to the little Meghan.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
“Mommy, I will give Lucy to them,” Meghan turned to me.
Recognizing what little Meghan's gesture meant, I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes.
参考范文:
“Mommy, I will give Lucy to them,” Meghan turned to me.“Oh, honey,” I said.“You don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much.” Meghan nodded seriously, eyes glistening with tears.“Lucy makes me happy, Mommy.Maybe she'll make that little girl happy, too.” She paused in front of the box that held the toys, pressed her round little face into Lucy's flat face, gave her a final kiss, and then laid her gently on top of the other toys. The boys watched, open mouthed, as their baby sister placed her favorite doll in the box.
Recognizing what little Meghan's gesture meant, I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes.I replaced it with the new hunter green jacket that I had bought on sale last week.I believed the young woman in the picture would like it and fit it as much as I did.The boys had also been inspired by our behavior and carried their beloved things. We all wished the family could pass the difficult period as soon as possible and that they would love the things we gave them with all our heart.
