A recent study confirms that several turtle (海龟) species have either greatly dropped or disappeared from various sections of the Australian Murray River.“The problem is that the long life of turtles makes people unable to sense the seriousness of the situation.” says Ricky Spencer, a co author of the study, which was published in February in Scientific Reports.“It's human nature that only when something is gone do we start missing it.”
Spencer and his workmates recorded the population of three once common turtle species at 52 sites along the southern areas of the river. The researchers inferred the species' population sizes from the number of individuals they caught in a given amount of time. They found the turtles have disappeared in places where they were previously rich, and most of the individuals they managed to catch elsewhere were large — and likely old adults.Spencer and his workmates blame the losses on continuing nest predation(捕食)by foxes, accompanied by other problems, including a worse and worse environment and serious drought in the 2000s.
“We have known about the sudden sharp drop of the population of the turtles for tens of years, and although media have covered a lot about the ‘trouble of our rivers’, nothing has been done,” says Rick Shine from Macquarie University in Sydney.“This paper is a wake up call that unless we begin to do something about turtle protection, we may lose an attractive part of our native creatures.”
The turtles could recover quickly if action is taken to protect nests from foxes and bring back living areas, Spencer notes. But governments tend to respond only when losses reach crisis levels, and the Murray River species currently lack the government's protection, he says.He and his workmates have a solution, however.“Our next step is to start designing community protection efforts for common turtle species,” he explains, “so people can actually do things without having to wait for the government's support.”

Snow leopards (雪豹) are so hard to photograph that scientists aren't even sure how many of these endangered animals still live in the wild.
The Snow Leopard Conservancy (SLC) set up 20 cameras in Russia in 2010 to learn more about the big cats. After a full six months, they had exactly zero picture! That's when the organization understood they needed help. And the only people who could help them in finding the leopards were the very people from whom they wanted to protect the animals — local hunters (猎人).
Hunting snow leopards is against the law in Russia, but in the terrible climate of Siberia, the few people living there had to turn to poaching (盗猎) to feed their families.
In 2013, Russian naturalist Sergei Spitsyn approached Mergen Markov, a local hunter, and told him his project.Markov agreed to set up the camera where he knew he would find leopards, and it worked.
Markov, once a poacher, works full time for the conservationists now and has 10 cameras monitoring leopards.“I visit each camera once a month.I have known this whole region since I was a child,” he said proudly.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) began working with other local villagers in 2015.The village would be paid 40,000 rubles at the end of the year if the image of a snow leopard is caught.WWF also rents horses from the villagers so that they do not need to make money by poaching any more.“Today there are far fewer leopard poachers but leopards still get caught in traps set for other animals, so I have to stay watchful,” said Markov.
Changing guns for cameras has made a big difference in the lives of these former poachers, the village, and the Russian snow leopards. The number of snow leopards has been rising and their population is expected to recover to normal levels within 10 years.

When you think about a deadly animal, you may think of a shark, a lion, or even an elephant. However, the truth is that the deadliest animal in the world is much smaller and more annoying. 16 And it feeds on human blood, transporting numerous diseases from one person to the next.Figure it out, yet Yes, it's the mosquito.
The numbers don't lie: According to the World Health Organization, more than 725,000 people worldwide are killed by mosquito borne diseases each year. These diseases include malaria (疟疾), dengue fever, yellow fever, and encephalitis. 17 “Being able to adapt easily to new environments is one of the reasons why mosquitoes are the most deadly,” Bums Blackwell, an expert in pest control said.
18 Mosquitoes have learned to lay eggs in as little as a few small drops of water and each female mosquito can lay between 50 and 500 eggs once.Their populations also reach the highest point at different times in different areas all over the world, making it nearly impossible to avoid being bitten. 19
In areas where there're too many mosquitoes, local authorities try to control the population through routine pesticide (杀虫剂) applications.“We should protect ourselves by avoiding places where there is too much water,” said Bernard Cohen, MD, a professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. 20 Wear bug repellent (驱虫剂) that contains DEET (up to 30 percent) when heading outdoors, and reapply it about every four hours.

B.There are more than 100 varieties of this thing on earth.

It was a Monday and Khan, a pet dog had joined the family the previous Friday. He had already decided that two year old Charlotte was his No.1 girl. The dog had seldom left her side since arriving at his new home.
Khan was next to Charlotte when Catherine took her into the garden for some fresh air.“I was just in the house doing boring mother things and Charlotte wanted to go outside and run around,” she says.“We were just walking around the garden looking at flowers and all that good stuff.Khan was with her.”
Charlotte was soon tired of playing in the garden and then went to play the padlock on the gate.“She was beating the padlock and it was banging on the gate,” Catherine recalls. She thought Khan, who was naturally right next to Charlotte, might be disturbed by the loud noise, but he seemed undisturbed by it.That was until, entirely without warning, he became very upset indeed.
“Khan suddenly started making this noise from the depths of his chest, this growl,” she says.“His whole chest puffed up, his hair stood up, and he lowered his head.He continued to make this growl.”
As Catherine watched, Khan seemed to double in size.“He kept trying to push her.I was right next to Charlotte — no more than a metre away and I thought, ‘He's going to hurt her’.His chest was bigger than he was long,” she says.
Time seemed to slow down as Catherine rushed desperately to save her daughter. But Khan got to Charlotte first. He grabbed her by the back of her clothes and threw her over his shoulder into the garden.“I turned and looked and she was just sitting there in a pile of grass.” Still not certain whether Khan's strange behaviour was some sort of attack on her child, Catherine raced to pick up Charlotte, who was completely unharmed, and take her inside to safety.Just as she turned to run into the house, Catherine saw a big brown snake bite Khan right in the chest and slid away quickly.
