When I teach yoga (瑜伽), I usually announce “Phones off and at the back of the room” at the beginning of class. Recently, I forgot and had to whisper to a student texting during class to turn off her phone. She looked displeased but did so. But two days later, in another class, I was met with resistance from a young woman who completely refused.
“But I’m on call. I might have to jump up and run out of class.”
“Then maybe this isn’t the best place for you to be tonight.”
That response got me an angry and unfriendly look. But when she came back the next week, there was no phone and she was much more present.
Present is what I’m asking my students to be. Present to themselves and their yoga experience. You cannot be present to yoga if you are texting or emailing or anxiously awaiting a call. And neither can anyone around you. Definitely, if one phone is out, many pairs of eyes are drawn to it. And then other phones start to appear. Forget the fact that you’re missing the class you paid for; you’re at risk of losing your balance and hurting yourself or someone else due to inattention, or disturbing someone else’s moment of peace and stillness with the clicking of your keys.
So please, do yourself and everyone around you, this teacher included, a favor and turn your phone off and put it away before you unroll your yoga mat. If you truly are on call, think hard before you come to class.
Be present for yourself, wherever you need to be.
24. How does the author introduce her topic
A. By making comparison. B. By giving examples.
C. By presenting the process. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
25. Why was the young woman angry with the author
A. Because she thought she was reasonable.
B. Because she was brave enough to say no.
C. Because she didn’t like the yoga class at all.
D. Because the author was rude to her.
26. Which is Not the probable result of using phones in yoga class
A. Hurting yourself. B. Missing the class.
C. Getting others’ admiration. D. Disturbing others.
27. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage
A. To describe the situation of her yoga class.
B. To explain her relationship with students.
C. To show her opinion about using mobile phones.
D. To stress the importance of being attentive in yoga class.

A new officer with the Huntington Park Police patrols (巡逻) local parks 24 hours a day seven days a week. He doesn't need rest, coffee breaks, a salary or medical insurance, and that is because it is a Robocop.
The main function of the Robocop is to scan and film the surroundings. Besides cameras with night vision that report 360 degrees, it also has a distress button which is located here, so if somebody is to need assistance or they want to contact the communication center, they can do it by way of that distress button. There are people that are monitoring on the other end.
This newest police employee is self-charging. It's easy to program it and make changes to the software if necessary. Its maintenance (维护) costs are roughly 75 thousand dollars a year. It travels the entire park. It is a programmed path, but the police are able to change the path and adapt it.
The Robocop can record the license plates (车牌) of passing cars and check them against an online database of stolen cars. It can also help locate a lost iPhone because it is able to determine a smartphone's MAC address. The police can see from the robot if something wrong happens and then come and figure it out.
The Robocop can't replace its human handlers. The whole goal is to give police more time to do things machines can't do. The police have been having some concerns about safety of the parks and want an extra set of eyes that will help patrol a 24/7. Robocop's creators believe this model known as K5 is best used for providing security at public places like hospitals, parking lots, parks and airports. So far, it seems to be working out just fine.
28. What is the distress button used to do
A. Locate the Robocop. B. Serve as an alarm device.
C. Communicate with visitors. D. Monitor the neighbourhood.
29. Which of the following can best describe the Robocop
A. Helpful but dangerous. B. Intelligent but inexpensive.
C. Tireless and multifunctional. D. Fashionable and good-looking.
30. Why does the Robocop record the license plates of passing cars
A. To direct traffic. B. To build a database.
C. To prevent accidents. D. To find lost cars.
31. What can we infer about the Robocop in the last paragraph
A. It has limitation in use. B. It has been widely used.
C. Its creators need more support. D. Its security is still under test.

A team from the University of Cambridge has found that sand dunes(沙丘)interact with and repel(相互作用和排斥)their downstream neighbours as they move.
It’s well-known that active sand dunes move around. Generally speaking, smaller dunes move faster and larger dunes move slower. What hasn’t been understood is whether and how dunes within a field interact with each other.
“There are different views on dune interaction: one is that dunes of different sizes will collide(相撞),and keep colliding until they form one giant dune,” said Karol Bacik, the study’s author. Now,Bacik and his workmates have shown results that question these explanations.
Dr Nathalie Vriend, who led the research, and the members of her lab designed a unique experimental device. Water-filled flumes(引水槽)are common tools for studying the movement of sand dunes, but the dunes can only be observed until they reach the end of the flume. For this study, the Cambridge researchers built a circular flume so that the dunes can be observed for hours, while high-speed cameras allow them to record the movement of the dunes.
The two dunes in the study started with the same amount of sand. As the flow began to move across the two dunes, they started moving. “Since we know that the speed of a dune is related to its height,we thought that they would move at an equal speed,” said Vriend. “However, this is not what we observed.”
At first, the front dune moved faster than the back dune, but as the experiment continued, the front dune began to slow down, until the two dunes were moving at almost the same speed. Besides, the type of flow across the two dunes was observed to be different: the front dune changing the flow’s direction, generating swirls(旋涡)on the back dune and pushing it away. The dunes got further and further apart. “So the front dune creates a wake(尾流)behind it that affects the behaviour of the following dune,” said Vriend.
What is the main purpose of the study?
To examine dunes’ structure. B. To explore dune interaction.
C.To measure the speed of dunes. D. To test swirls in flumes.
33. What is special about the equipment used by the Cambridge researchers?
A. It helps them study dunes moving at high speeds.
B. It allows them to observe dunes’ long-term behaviour.
C. It makes it possible to watch dunes at the end of the flume.
D. It provides information about dunes stored in water-filled flumes.
34. What did the researchers expect of the two dunes before the experiment?
A. They might disappear gradually. B. They might change their heights.
C. They might become smaller dunes. D. They might move at the same speed.
35. Which of the following separated the two dunes in the experiment?
A. The power of the sand moving in the flume.
B. The pushing force of the back dune:
C. The wake produced by the front dune.
D. The high speed of the two dunes.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
About two years ago,I was at a stop sign when I heard whimpering(微弱的叫声)coming from inside a car parked on the street next to mine. It was very hot and the dog was trying to get some of the cooler fresh air outside the car. It was obvious that the dog needed some help. Without thinking I parked my car and got out to help him.
I guessed that the owner must be sleeping in the car. I knocked at the window, but there was no response. Then I tried to open the door of the car. The car was locked and there was no way to save the dog. Thinking of the irresponsible(不负责任的)owner I became angry. I didn’t know if I should break the window and take the dog or try to contact the owner. Just then,I noticed a police car on the opposite side of the street. I ran out and flagged it down.
When the police officer helped open the door, the dog rushed out, barked at us and ran quickly behind the house which the car was parked in front of. We sensed something unusual, and went after the dog to make sure he was OK. Then we saw why the dog had barked and run. The dog’s owner was lying in the middle of his garage. Obviously the man had a condition that caused him to have an attack. This one was so bad that he needed an immediate medical care. Without second thought, the officer went back to get his car, leaving me staying with the owner anxiously. The dog walked around its owner, hanging its head.

读后续写(满分25分)
We rushed the patient to the nearest hospital, forgetting the dog. The doctors were about to treat the patient when the dog broke in, out of breath and sweating all over. Everybody present was shocked and scared. Tears swelled up in my eyes. I explained to them that the dog meant no harm. It was just worried about its owner. At last, thanks to the doctors' efforts, its owner came to life.
From the incident I learned much. If I had not helped, the dog would probably have been choked to death and that if the dog hadn't reminded us, and if the police officer had not been around, the man would also probably have died. I was deeply moved by the dog and my eyes were in tears. I realized how important it was to other people's lives by doing the right thing. I cannot imagine what I would feel if I knew that man had died because a lot of things may have gone differently.
